In an instant, Jay was at her side. He grabbed her hand and stroked it with his. She continued to cry so he carefully lent her forward and sat on the bed beside her. She lent back into him as his arms snaked around her. Y/N was safe now. He repeated that over and over until she fell asleep in his arms, safe.
…
Jay had stayed with her all night, just holding his partner. She woke several times that night, in sweats, screaming for him to get off her, to leave her alone. She was confused. But he would stay, whispering comfort to her until she fell back to sleep. He tried to stay strong, hiding the cracking of his voice until she couldn’t hear him, and then the choked sobs would escape.
Will was working that night so he regularly came up to check on them, mainly to provide comfort to his brother, who he knew was attempting to hold it together for his partner. But really it was Voight who was able to do this. After Y/N had first fallen asleep, the sergeant came up and sat in the armchair across from her bed.
He stayed all night, stepping in to help calm Y/N down. Comforting Jay when he would fall apart as she fell back asleep.
“Halstead.” The gruff voice made him look up from his hand entwined with Y/N’s. The sergeant was hovering in the doorframe, his eyes seeking for permission to come in.
“Hey sarge. She just fell back asleep.” Jay’s voice was low and heavy. Voight entered and sat in the leather armchair across from the pair. He watched as Jay rubbed his free hand across his eyes. Jay was tired and barely holding it together, the guilt was eating away at him.
“Halstead, how are you doing?” The question took his subordinate by surprise, Y/N was the one who was hurt, and he was the one who let it happen. “Um … okay. I’m just so worried about her, Sarge. She keeps waking up screaming, I hate this.” It was a feeble attempt at deflection. He rubbed his hand across his tired face.
“Jay…” before he could finish Halstead had let out a stifled sob. Voight knew Jay felt guilty, felt like he didn’t deserve comfort and wouldn’t listen if someone told him it wasn’t his fault. So instead, he got up, walked over to his detective and placed a hand on his shoulder. Guided by his sergeant’s hand, Jay slid away from beside Y/N and stood up.
Voight embraced Jay in a tight hug and allowed his detective to cry. Halstead wasn’t one to be vulnerable in front of anyone, let alone his superiors but in that moment, he needed to. The guilt, the stress, his pain and his love and worry for his partner was too heavy on his shoulders.
Will, on a ten minute break, had made his way up to Y/N’s room to check on his brother. But when he reached her room and saw the two men embracing, he stopped, then returned to the elevator to grab a coffee instead. His little brother was in good hands.
The next morning, Y/N was to have a few more tests, then hopefully would be discharged that afternoon on bed rest. The rest of the team had popped by to say hi, Y/N was putting on a laughing, sunshine front as they visited but Jay knew it wouldn’t last long.
Once the team had all left a few hours later, Y/N was quiet. Her eyes were cast down and each time Jay tried to get her to look up she would close off. She appeared to be ashamed, ashamed of him.
“Y/N” It wasn’t a question. Jay needed her to acknowledge him. “Look at me Y/N, talk to me” still she didn’t look up. Jay got up from the armchair in the corner and walked towards her. He perched on the side of her bed and reached his hand out for hers, but she flinched.
“Y/N please.” When she finally looked up Jay saw her eyes filled with tears and it broke his heart. “Y/N please talk to me. I’m sorry. I hated what I had to do yesterday. I hated every second of it.”
“I know Jay. I know but … it felt so real” Y/N replied, her bottom lip quivering. Jay knew what she meant, he had pretended to be some perverted pimp that wanted to ‘buy’ her and although it was to save her life, the way he grabbed her and threw her behind the truck had sparked a pain in both of them.
“Y/N look I know what I did hurt you, fuck Y/N/N it broke my heart but I had to.” Jay was in full on tears by now and his eyes were pleading for his partner’s permission.
“I know. And I forgive you” Y/N finally choked out. And with that, Jay embraced his partner knowing all would be alright.

“You’re okay Y/N. We’re here. You’re safe.” Jay kept repeating those words to his broken best friend, whom he held in his arms. Only when she heard the gruff voice of her sergeant did she take her head off Jay’s chest and lookup.
“I’m sorry Y/L/N. You’re gonna be okay kid.” Spoke Voight to his detective. The four men consoled their teammate, their family member for a while longer. Their voices cracked and caught as they continued to whisper words of comfort until the ambulance arrived to take her to safety.
…
When the ambulance backed into the clearing and the doors swung open, Voight, Adam and Kevin gave Y/N one last shoulder squeeze and then backed away. But Jay stayed. He kept holding Y/N in his arms as the paramedics joined them.
After a brief assessment and seeing no critical injuries, the medics suggested moving into the ambulance to warm up. Y/N’s mind was elsewhere so her partner wrapped an arm around her waist and helped her up. She was weak and her ribs were sore, potentially broken, so he carefully and slowly guided her to the rig.
“Halstead you stay with her, we’ll meet you at the hospital,” Voight called out to the pair. A quick look of sympathy and concern was shared between the men, they knew what was coming next would take a toll on them all.
The entire ambulance ride was silent. Jay and Y/N sat on the gurney, her head against his chest, his arms wrapped around her. Jay sent a quick text to his brother to tell him what the situation was. Y/N, like all of Intelligence, was close with the staff at Gaffney and Jay knew the last thing his partner needed was to have all of her friends swarming her with their concern, even if it came from a place of love.
When they came to a stop in the ambulance bay and the doors opened, Will and Maggie were standing there waiting. Will jumped up into the rig and held Y/N up from one side whilst Jay guided her on the other. With a Halstead on either side keeping her from falling apart, she was walked into a treatment room.
“Jay,” Will spoke quietly to his brother. Jay knew what was coming but hated the idea. “Jay you gotta wait outside man,” He looked down at his trembling best friend and his heart sank further than he thought it could.
“Will, I don’t want to leave her alone.” Jay pleaded knowing it was futile. “She’s not alone. I promise man, it’s gonna be okay.” Will was met by one final look of resistance. “Jay… please, for Y/N. She doesn’t need you here for this.” With a sense of deep sadness, Jay finally conceded and agreed to leave.
“Y/N/N? I’m gonna wait outside. You gonna be okay?” Jay knew she wasn’t fully there, she was still in shock. He wasn’t surprised when he didn’t receive a response so instead, he squeezed her hand, wiped her tears, kissed her forehead, and walked out of the room.
… an hour later …
Jay was sitting on the floor of the waiting room, back leaning against the wall. His head hung low and his arms rested on his pulled-up knees. Kim had arrived at the hospital. She wasn’t working this week but with the news of what happened, she drove straight in.
The whole team was taking this hard but they knew none harder than Jay. Kim walked over him and slid down on the wall beside him. She placed a hand on his arm, a feeble attempt to console him in his guilt and worry for his partner.
“Hey.” She spoke quietly to him. He raised his head just enough to reply “Hey” back.
“You doing okay, Jay?” She knew he wasn’t but what else was there to say. “Kim, we should have stopped this. I should have stopped this.” His words were thick with guilt. “Jay, you couldn’t have known what was gonna go down. And we don’t know anything for sure yet.”
He knew what she meant, and he knew she was wrong.
“Kim.” The pair shared a look, they both had sadly accepted what had happened to their friend at the hands of that monster. “Look Jay whatever it is, we’ll deal with it, we’ll be here for her.” He nodded, internally pleading: if only it were that easy.
“She’s gonna hate it when she wakes up. Y/N’s only scared of 3 things. Flying, spiders, and this,” he chuckled sadly. “It’s nearly happened to her before, when she was just out of high school. She got away from him but it spooked her. It’s why she joined the academy. Why she never walks down a street that’s not lit, never goes anywhere without her piece, never gets into an elevator alone. She’s terrified of it. And when I found out why she did all of those things, I told her I’d never let it happen to her. I promised her that Kim.”
“Jay this isn’t on you.” She pleaded for him to believe but knew he never would. “She’s my partner Kim. She’s my best friend and I know her better than anyone and this wasn’t supposed…” He stopped and sighed. Sitting there and saying those things wasn’t going to make it go away. He had to do something.
“I’m gonna go get some stuff from her apartment. And then I should be there when they’re done.” And with that, he left.
…
Jay, you should get her man. Y/N wants you.
A text from Will broke his trance. He got out of his truck, in which he had just been sitting in the parking lot, stalling from having to face reality. He grabbed the bag of Y/N’s stuff from the back seat and raced in.
Ignoring the questions from his team and sergeant, he walked into the ED and then followed his brother into the elevator. “You’ve already moved her to a room? Will, man, I asked you to text me as soon as you were done.” Jay scorned his brother.
“I know. She had to have some scans and they’ve just moved her. She was pretty zoned out through the whole thing. She’s only just started to ask for you.” Will explained, pitying his little brother for her could see the guilt and worry weighing on his shoulders. The elevator dinged and Will moved fast, fully aware of his brother’s anxious state.
When Jay reached her room he stopped in his tracks. She looked worse than before, the bruises had darkened and the blood had been cleaned up, revealing the nasty looking cuts underneath that sourced those bleeds, that sourced her pain. Or at least the physical pain.
Jay knew the real pain was within. And he knew it was bad, he could see it in her expression, her eyes, and her closed-off, unusual posture. Y/N was confident and happy most of the time. She was a stark contrast to him but they worked like that, she would make him smile and laugh even after tough cases and he would protect her. He was supposed to protect her.
Jay quickly regained his composure and walked in. He didn’t want her to think that he looked at her differently. “Hey, you” Jay tried to put as much strength behind it as he could. “Hey partner” Y/N croaked back. She gave him a weak smile and it broke her. She wanted to be strong and composed for him but in truth, she knew she didn’t have to.

Warnings - potential abuse and sexual assault
“What the hell just happened!” Voight shouted as he stormed up the bullpen stairs. His subordinates stared back at him, dumbfounded, as they too were processing the chaos that had just unfolded.
Kevin was the first to speak up, “Sarge, slow down…” He was interrupted but the harsh shouts of his sergeant. “Don’t tell me to calm down Kevin! One of my detectives was just abducted and not one person here can care to explain? Huh? Not even her partner. Halstead?”
Jay cast his eyes down to avoid the burn of Voight’s stare. He was ashamed. He was still processing. How had this all happened? Why didn’t he protect her?
“Sarge, I don’t know what to tell you, those guys, they just blew up, snapped. They pulled guns, put one to Y/N’s head, and dragged her into a truck that was waiting in the alley around the back. It must have been a setup, Sarge.” Jay replied, his voice laced with guilt.
“Ruzek, I thought you said your CI was solid?” Voight turned his anger to Adam. “He was...or at least I thought he was. Look, Sarge, I’m so sorr…”
“Enough. I don’t want to hear it. We just need to focus on getting Y/N back.” His sergeant snapped back. The rest of the unit mumbled in agreement, heads hanging low, all weighed down by the guilt of the parts they played in allowing Y/N, their partner and friend, to be thrown into the back of a truck by violent criminals.
...
The team all sat around the bullpen as their sergeant emerged from his office. “Right, talk to me, what do we have?”
Jay jumped to his feet and walked over to the board to stick up a photo. “This is Nicolas Heath. Vice has had him on their radar for years, he’s a known pimp, big in cross-state trafficking, and has priors for sexual assault, trafficking, and fraud.
Jay placed two more photos up underneath Heath’s. “These were the guys at the meet last night. They were the ones who took Y/N. They have similar priors to Heath but seem to be more like his lieutenants. We’ve got them on pods driving Y/N away in a black SUV Toyota. That was tracked to a house in Evanston where we think Y/N is being held.”
Ruzek walked up to the board next, reading a file in his hand. “That checks out, my CI is sitting in interrogation room 2 right now. The prick told me he’s been taking money from Heath over the last few weeks. In exchange, he invited girls to parties at clubs that Heath runs. My CI was getting nervous so reached out to me with fake info about Heath, he wanted us to take Heath down to save his own ass.” Ruzek then pinned up a few photos of a large, fortified, white house. “He tells me this is one of Heath’s places, it’s in Evanston so that checks with the footage of the SUV. But he also tells me it’s heavily secured with armed guards and it’s likely that if Heath has Y/N and we try to move on it, she’ll be dead before we get through the front door.”
The whole team sighed in frustration. They knew what type of guy Heath was and the longer they waited the worse things would potentially be for Y/N. Finally their superior spoke up. “Adam get your CI to reach out to Heath. We need to know if Y/N’s cover is still intact. If we can’t go in through the front door maybe we can set up a ‘buy’ and get our girl back.”
The team shook their heads in a mix of frustration and disgust at the thought of having to ‘buy’ back their teammate from that monster like she’s some object.
…
A few hours later and Jay was down in the roll-up, fixing a wire to the buttons of his shirt. A plan had been formulated; Halstead was going to meet a contact of Heath’s, posing as a pimp looking to move some ‘product’.
A quick, yet painful, phone call between Adam’s CI and Heath revealed he was still unaware Y/N was a cop. Jay had said on the phone he was looking for a specific type of ‘product’ and once he described a girl roughly matching Y/N’s description, Heath said he had someone for Jay. A meet was set at 9 pm by the docks.
The whole team was on edge. Some were scared of what Y/N was going through in the hands of the monster that is Nicolas Heath, most were nervous of the ‘buy’ that was soon to go down, but all were feeling guilty for allowing Y/N to be in this situation in the first place.
Once the wire was fixed and the van set, the team rolled out the back of district 21, with a thousand things racing through their minds.
They arrived at the predetermined meet point and waited. The surveillance van with Kevin, Adam, and Voight was hidden around the corner, whilst Jay waited in a UC truck parked out in the open. His jean-covered legs were bouncing up and down, but not from the cold. His partner, no, his best friend was out there somewhere in the hands of a rapist-pimp, alone and defenseless.
After 20 mins, a tattered grey van turned the corner and parked opposite Jay’s truck. Halstead sent a quick text to Voight notifying them of its arrival and then climbed out the truck. He looked on trying to see his partner beyond the blaring headlights of that grey van. When the white beams were cut he finally locked eyes with her.
When he saw her weak and bruised body with legs barely holding herself up, in a vice grip of two thugs, Jay’s instincts were to run to her, but he couldn’t. Thug 1 had a Glock 19 jammed into the side of her head and Thug 2 had one trained on him. He had to play this smart. The only way to get Y/N out of this was to play along with the ‘buy’, despite it making him sick to his stomach.
Jay casually walked around to the back of the truck and pulled out a black bag from the back. He checked his watch, stalled a bit to not seem too eager, put a stick of gum in his mouth, began to chew, stalled some more, and finally walked back towards Heath and his thugs.
“What you got for me then?” Jay questioned nonchalantly as he nodded towards his partner. “She what I asked for? Cuz I got a lotta cash here and I ain’t about to waste it.” Saying this was breaking him, but he had to play along.
“Yeh this one’ll be worth your trouble, she’s feisty, trust me.” Heath laughed back at his ‘buyer’. Jay’s heart sank. What had he meant by ‘trust me’? What had he done to her?
“Halstead keep your cool, flash him the money and get him to hand Y/N over” his sergeant’s voice spoke through his earpiece. Jay listened and opened to bag up to show Heath he meant business. “It’s all there. Hand her over, I wanna get a look before I hand this over.” Jay swallowed the sick in his mouth as he watched his partner shift uncomfortably between the two men.
When Y/N cast her eyes back up to look at Jay, he could see her tears in her eyes, despite the bruises there. His body kept playing the role but his eyes were calling out to her, he was internally begging she could see through his facade.
Thug 2 lowered his gun once Jay had flashed the money. Thug 1 kept his gun tight against Y/N’s head as he roughly pulled her towards Jay. He released her and she stumbled, on weak legs, the short distance to Jay.
Jay, careful not to grab at bruises, yanked on her arms and roughly pulled her towards the truck. He wanted to hug her, hold her and wipe her tears but he couldn’t. There were still 3 armed men 10 ft away who couldn’t know they were cops.
Y/N let out a small cry as the zip ties on her wrists dug deeper into the red, bleeding skin. “Quiet!” Jay demanded. “Move. Go on.” He pushed her around the back of the truck, attempting to shield her from any further potential dangers.
“Your money’s all there. Was a pleasure doing business with you.” Jay called out to Heath and his thugs.
“Pleasure’s all mine man, anytime. Enjoy that one” he nodded his head towards Y/N and stuck out a hand to Jay. Reluctantly Jay shook it and forced himself to say “Oh I will.”
The three men climbed back in their van with the money and reversed around the corner.
Shortly after, sirens and shouts of Chicago PD could be heard but Jay paid no attention. As soon as that van was out of sight Jay ran around the truck to Y/N.
Only now did he have a chance to fully take in her appearance. Her wrists were bleeding underneath zip ties. Arms were painted a horrible mix of blacks and blue. Blood was drying around her eyebrows and lip. Her left eye was swollen and purple and both were glistening with tears. She was in a short dress, ripped and filthy. But worst of all she was shaking violently, perhaps from the lack of layers and cold but more likely from the trauma of the last 24 hours. And that thought haunted Jay, he knew it always would.
When he finally reached her small and trembling body he cut the ties quickly and engulfed her in a hug. She sunk into his warm and then down to the floor. Jay went down with her, just holding her close as sobs shook through her body.
A hand came up to her face and he wiped her tears away and tucked her hair behind her ear. His strong arms held onto her so tight she thought she might crumble into a hundred pieces if he ever let go. So he didn’t.
“Shh. You’re okay. You’re okay Y/N/N. I got you. You’re safe.” He whispered into her ears. “I’m so sorry Y/N. I’m so sorry.” He began to choke up and the sound of her sobs. How had he let this happen?
Shortly after, the surveillance van and a few patrol cars arrived on scene. As Voight and the other officers climbed out their vehicles they were horrified at the scene before them.
Y/N looked like she’d been through hell. She was clinging to her partner desperately. Her shaking, although likely caused by a state of shock, prompted Adam to take off his coat and walk over to the partners on the floor.
He placed the coat on her shoulders and then squeezed one, trying to show his support and love and remorse through the action. Kevin walked over next with a blanket and knelt down with them.
The four men consoled their teammate, their family member, for a while longer. Their voices cracked and caught as they continued to whisper words of comfort until the ambulance arrived to take her to safety.

I hope you guys liked it! Again I have no idea what I’m doing, this is just fun and a nice little escape for me.
Mouse: I scare people a lot because I walk very softly and they don’t hear me enter rooms. So, when they turn around, I’m just kind of there and their fear fuels me.
Jay burst through the doors, long gun raised, scanning for his partner or the source of that gunshot. The gunshot that made his heart drop to the floor. He cleared the room shouting for you.
“Y/L/N!” Jay pleaded as he cleared the room. The only response he received was a whimper from deeper in the dark room. He rushed towards it, praying it was the offender whining as you cuffed him, but he wasn’t that lucky. Instead as he got closer, he saw you lying on your back, motionless.
“Y/L/N! Oh god Y/N.” He ran and knelt down next to you on the cold floor. He placed his rifle down and began to search for the cause of your pain. As he raised the bottom of your vest up he saw that his fears were true. The very thing he had nightmares about was happening.
A single bullet wound was gushing blood on your lower abdomen. “Y/N! I’m here, you’re okay. Talk to me Y/N/N” Jay pleaded, all the while still praying if he pinched himself he would just wake up and this would be a bad dream. How did this happen? How had he let his partner get shot.
“Dispatch this is 50-21-George, I’ve got an officer down. Roll an ambo to 3328 West 4th Street now!” Jay rambled into his radio. “Y/N/N I’m here, stay with me.”
Jay reached behind him and grabbed a loose piece of cloth and pressed it onto your wound. At the pressure you began to stir and Jay reacted fast. “Y/N talk to me. Come on Y/N, please, I’m right here.” Your eyes fluttered open and locked with his. You could see the worry and panic swirling in the green and he could see the pain reflecting back from yours.
“J-Jay?” You managed to croak out, barely above a whisper. Just as Jay was about to reply your Sergeant’s voice crackled through his radio. “Halstead ambos are on route and we’re 4 blocks out. You keep our girl alive. You hear me Jay?”
Voight’s concern, a new tone for him, brought you back to the terrifying reality of your situation and tears began to prick your eyes. “Is it bad?” you shakily questioned. Your partner picked up on your fear in an instant, he could always read you so well. “No. No Y/N/N it's okay. You’re gonna be fine. You hear me? I got you Y/N/N.”
He grabbed your hand and held it in his own, pressing it into the wound on your stomach. With his other arm Jay pulled your head into his lap and you grabbed at his leg; an anchor, a grip on this world; a moor on your consciousness. But more than that, you needed to feel him there, you needed the comfort.
Jay began to stroke the hair from the side of your face and leaned in closer to whisper comfort in your ear. “You’re okay Y/N/N, I’m here, I got you.” Your partner kept repeating those words as he held you tight.
Both of you were crying silently now, all Jay could do was keep pressure on your stomach and hold you close, keep you calm and wait for the ambulance, but as your breathing started to go shallow, he panicked. “Y/N don’t let go, help is coming. Please Y/N hold on.” You were so tired but you had to tell him. Jay was always home to you, he was your safe and he was a constant in your life. How fitting that he was there as it was ending.
“It’s okay” you croaked out, barely above a whisper. “It’s okay” you repeated and Jay lifted his forehead from yours. “It’s okay. You got me. It’s okay”
“Y/N/N. No. No please” he begged as tears slipped down his face onto yours. You wanted to say more but things were getting hazy, your eyes were growing heavy. All you could do was smile up at him, communicating with your eyes, like always, to tell him being here, in his arms, your head in his lap, was all you needed. You really were okay.
Jay just held you tighter, placing his forehead back on yours as he wiped away your tears and stroked your hair. Your partner placed a gentle kiss on your forehead and on the hand he held with his. Your eyes fluttered shut just as the doors burst open with your unit and the paramedics rushing in.
Sorry idk how to write fics ... but hope you liked it!!

Before I felt it all:
Blinking slowly, Y/N took in her surroundings. Blood. Fire. Dirt. Debris everywhere. She was on the floor and shaking. She blinked more trying to recall what had happened. How had it gone so wrong….
Earlier that day
Intelligence had caught an unusual case that morning and now partners Y/N and Jay were on their way to a house where the strange events of today had led them.
A young man, Luke, had walked into the district that morning asking for Detective Y/L/N. Platt had called Y/N down and pointed her in the direction of the bench where a scrawny looking, maybe 20-ish kid was sitting, bouncing his knees up and down, nervously. Y/N immediately recognised him as one of her old CIs and sat down as he began to explain his situation.
Luke, the hyperactive CI that Y/N had dismissed after he had worked off his debt, apologised for showing up but claimed he had information she would want to hear . Luke explained how he had messed up and was caught up in an explosives buy from a well known C4 supplier that the CPD was eager to apprehend. Luke was a good kid and Y/N liked him but he was always trying to build some new piece of technology, like he was Tony Stark and that crazy genius of him was what had got him mixed up in all this in the first place. Y/N explained to him that if he wanted to help, he needed to stay the hell away from the supplier, named Solano, and just tell her the time and place he was supposed to meet Solano.
Y/N bounded into her sergeant’s office and told Voight what she had, a game plan was formed and Jay and Y/N were on their way to Luke’s meet spot to scope it out before they would come back with the team tomorrow for the buy and take Solano down.
...
It was only when they arrived that Y/N realised Luke had lied. The deal was going down a day earlier than he had told her. And it wasn’t going down well. When they walked into the house they were met with a tied up Luke with a block of C4 taped to his chest.
Y/N rushed to him but Jay held her back. The situation was unstable and the device could blow at any minute. Y/N was fighting her partner, trying to save her helpless screwup kid of a CI, but Jay’s arms were too strong around her.
“Jay let me go, we gotta help him” she said as he was practically dragging her away. “Y/N no. We need to call the bomb squad. It could be unstable”. Still Y/N continued to struggle against his iron grip.
“Y/N/N!” Jay said sternly. She stopped and turned to him. “Y/N/N please” he repeated, quieter now, pleading for her cooperation. She trusted Jay with all that she was. And as much as she wanted to help Luke, Y/N would never not trust her partner so she calmed and his strong arms released her.
“Stay here and keep Luke calm. I’m gonna go outside and call it in. Don’t key your radio and don’t get too close” Jay said as he began to move away to a safe distance to radio it in. “Yeh copy you” she absent-mindedly replied. “Y/N I mean it, please” he said as he placed a hand on her shoulder. Their eyes met and Y/N nodded in agreement as he turned and went outside.
From there things only got worse. The bomb squad were 15 mins away and Luke was panicking hard. Whist Jay stayed outside on the phone to Sergeant Dwire, Y/N stayed in front of Luke trying to calm him. He was begging her to help and she felt useless to it all. She felt responsible and guilty and utterly useless.
After 10 mins of “Just breathe Luke. You’re okay. Help Is coming” the situation flipped. One minute he was there talking to her. The next she was thrown back and covered in his blood.
...
Blinking slowly, Y,N took in her surroundings. Blood. Fire. Dirt. Debris everywhere. She was on the floor and shaking. She blinked more trying to recall what had happened. How had it gone so wrong….
Jay came running in and rushed to her side. Her ears were ringing and he sounded a 1000 miles away. He might as well have been. Shock, guilt, pain made up those miles and blocked her from hearing Jay’s words of comfort. She was almost catatonic as the next hour unfolded, she was numb.
Someone, house 51 she thinks, raced in and put the flames out. Someone, Severided she thinks, helped her up and walked her to the back of an ambulance. Someone, her sergeant she thinks, asked her if she was okay and as someone else, Slyvie, she thinks, checked her over. And Jay, she knows, answered for her, helped her into his truck and drove her back to her place.
...
When they arrived at her building, she remained still in the passenger seat. Jay hopped out the car and opened the passenger side door. He held his arms around her tightly as he walked her, an ambo blanket still wrapped around her shoulders, to the front door. His arms were the only thing that stopped her from crumbling onto the floor and never moving again.
He used his key to let them in and walked her straight to the bedroom. Her apartment was a place where they'd shared many beers after tough cases, exchanged military stories and laughed till ungodly hours of the morning. Their platonic friendship and their legendary partnership was envied by all, but tonight Jay felt the heavy burden of her pain alone as he sat her on her bed and walked into the bathroom to turn the water on.
Y/N was completely covered in dirt, blood, soot, and shock. She sat on the bed and stared right through her partner as he knelt before her with a sad expression on his face. “Y/N? Y/N/N can you hear me?” A blank face was all that replied. He knew her mind was elsewhere, back at the site or rather death-site of which now she wore on her clothes and skin. He tried to guide her up onto her feet but couldn’t. Jay picked his limp partner up, his numb best friend, and carried her into her bathroom.
He hated seeing her like this, she was so far away and he knew where her cruel mind was taking her was a place of pain, and she was alone there. But regardless, he continued to move her into the shower. Jay laid her down on his lap on the shower floor. Warm, comforting water poured from above onto their clothes, washing away the events of the day.
He picked up a flannel and began to clean the blood away from her face, the water ran red down the drain as he gently stroked her face. He washed her hair and scrubbed her hands as Y/N continued to lay limp in his arms.
By the time the water started to turn cold, Y/N was clean and free physically from the evidence of the day. Jay had taken her jeans and shirt off her at some point in the shower. He had felt a faint red blush appear on his cheeks as he did so, but Y/N needed help and they knew each other far too well for it to ever be awkward.
Jay had got her out and dry and into clean clothes and done the same for himself, from his drawer at her place that came in all too useful when their beer turned to beers and he crashed on her couch. He pulled back her bed sheets and placed her beneath the warmth that they held and just as he turned away to head to his spot on the couch, she grabbed his hand.
“Stay”. One word, but the only word that Y/N had spoken since the explosion. And the only word he needed to hear.
How much of the night Y/N would remember, Jay did not know, but he climbed onto the bed next to her anyway and held her tight as she cried the night away in her best friend's embrace.
