A musical journey years in the making. I am happy to say that I will be working with this amazing group this summer and would love for everyone to help us make this happen!
This is a piece for viola I wrote called ACBC(1). It was really an exercise for me in letting the instrument write the piece. Normally when I go about writing classical music I have a very specific preconceived outcome that I want and I kind of force the instruments into producing the sounds. Which was my main problem, the music sounded forced. The instrument didn't really show off it's true potential or it's true character, I felt more like I was trying to control music rather than write it (if that makes sense). So with this piece I decided to go about writing in a different manner. I started this project with nothing but a vague idea and a melody (written out in pitch intervals). Using that melody I went about trying to find where it could be played on the viola to let the viola really use all of it sonic potential in terms of resonance. After placing the melody on the viola where I thought it sounded the best I commenced developing material for the piece by seeing how many ways the melody could be played on the viola, lucky i have an amazing viola playing friend named Carrie Frey who was able to show me all types of cool things. After recording what was possible I took three different sound realms, added my own compositional processes to the material, and viola! A piece of music. And also a collaborative approach with a performer of a specific instrument that truly helped me understand how to use instruments to properly express my musical ideas without me feeling like I was trapping the instrument.

This is a track from a recent recording session run by me and my colleague Isaac Jones. The session was used as a way for us to experiment with doing room recordings, which means everyone in the band was in the same room. We've been working on developing are recording skills in this manner mainly out of necessity (lack of money) and it has taught us a lot about how microphone placement can help compensate for lack of sound isolation booths when trying to get quality recordings.
I would like to send my BIGGEST congratulations to my friend Drew Dickler for her film DRESS being an official select and winner of best LGBT film at this years Independent Filmmakers Showcase Festival in Los Angeles. I've started to realize that I do my best work when I am part of collaborations. Here is my first piece collaborating with dance. I wrote the music for choreographers Hayley Larson's dance piece "My Legs Do Better Understand Me". The name of my piece is called Asheville after the home town of Hayley. With this project I used the person that I was collaborating with as my inspiration. Being that I had never written for dance before I decided to really try and get what inspired my partner. Through many talks with Hayley I discovered among other things her love for the type of folksy bluegrassy music from North Carolina. I used that along with ideas gained from discussions of what this piece means to her to write the music you hear. With this collaboration I feel I learned a lot about working with dancers, the art of dance in general, and about Hayley which will hopefully make are next collaboration that much better.
This is a representation of a video installation that I designed while at the IRCAM in Paris. The max patch randomly picks a sound file from a data base of about 50 different sounds all different interpretations of the poem Le Voyage by Charles Baudelaire. The sounds were then processed through delays, gains, and a spacialization tool developed at the IRCAM and set between ranges that I pre-determined although in every performance I did not know where in the range the audio file would land. The final data from all the various audio processes was then used to control both video play back and processing. The things that remained constant are the order or the videos that are played and the background drone track. The installation was originally meant for a quad set up but for this post obviously it is in stereo.

During June 2012 I had the honor of being a pioneering member of the Music Creation and Critique program at L'Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris, France. The program is a for week program consisting of Advanced max/MSP programming, philosophy of contemporary music practice, attendance to the Mani-Feste, and lectures and classes on the latest developments at the IRCAM.

NOX was the junior recital of composers Haley Shaw and myself. The recital included three pieces: 2pm by Haley Shaw, Enfance by Gerard Marcus, and Pepper by Shaw.
The atmosphere of the recital was accomplished by hanging vintage light bulbs with visible filaments with stage production and lighting credits going to Reed Tuddenham and Daniel Dudley.

Hello all. So it's been a while since I've put anything up. Here is an update on my work. I'm back in school after a summer of recording internships which were amazing! Now I'm focused on writing some new music. I've finished the third movement of a piece setting a poem by Rimbaud which will be on my junior recital, there are four more movements I have to finish which I plan on doing this winter as part of my residency at the Banff Center for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. And I have done some major revisions to Arrows for piano and electronics which will be played again sometime next year. A lot of be plans ahead and a lot of work to do. I'll try to keep you guys posted. Peace!

CONCERT TONIGHT!
Hello all. I know it's last minute but a new piece of mine titled NMW will be premiered tonight at the Oberlin Conservatory in Kulas recital hall at seven o'clock. It's a piece for bass clarinet, trumpet, violin, and cello and will be played on a concert featuring other new original works by several other composers in Oberlin. Hope you can make it.
