gay cas was great don’t get me wrong I love the canon gay angel and his rainbow wings and his Divine Pining or whatever but something about canon bi dean who has spent years performing an extremely rigid version of masculinity that was instilled in him by his father who developed deep intense relationships with men but struggled to do the same with women beyond sex and who is a depressed slut with self esteem issues who knew deep down he didn’t deserve his trauma but then kept making choices that reinforced his view of himself as an unloveable person. hits different :/

it's something about the way Dean could have easily been a shallow misogynistic fiend of a character who saw women as sex objects he otherwise couldn't relate with, but Jensen imbued him with this quiet reserve of tenderness that allows you to perceive that macho exterior for what it is: a fragile shell patched together by a child who desperately wants back the loving home he thought he would be raised in. this same child who idolizes his mother and father, ignoring their faults and embracing their passions as his own in a way he wished could be reciprocated onto him, loving the parts of himself that he believes are unlovable. he grew up in a way that denied him the ability to determine who he was because it was dictated for him, and it took literal divine intervention for him to perceive a reality where he might not have to uphold the strict behaviors put upon him in order to please his father. it took an angel to make him believe he was more than the shell patched together by the favourite parts of his parents, made to protect the soft sweet loving vulnerable side of him. dean brushed up against a celestial being and it cracked through that facade, finally allowing his light to shine through

part of me thinks cas knew what dean was going to say in purgatory, but he didn’t let him because if dean said it out loud than cas would experience that moment of true happiness and get snatched right then and there

okay but running with this idea, "the one thing i want, i know i cant have" doesn't mean cas thinks dean doesnt love him but rather he believes their lives will always be too complicated, too steeped in tragedy for them to be together. there would always be monsters and death and cosmic beings to deal with. there would never be a time or a place for them. they both knew how the other felt but couldn't address it because then they would have to deal with it, and they just never had the time. so they danced around each other for years; exchanging stolen glances, letting their fingers brush thinking, it was the best they would ever get because they would never be able to have each other and as a result would never truly he happy

The one thing he knew he couldn't have was Dean, not because Dean didn't reciprocate, but because the very act of allowing him to accept that love and happiness would trigger the deal and send him to The Empty (depression metaphor) forever. He truly could not have it beyond the confessing of it, and this was the final bit of narrative that was missing in the finale. When a character's structural narrative itself has dictated that he could not have the one thing he wanted most for three whole seasons, and the final villain (who represented the narrative itself) is overthrown, the only logical conclusion was that these characters are now freed from the narrative that would've kept them silenced and prevented them from actually having the one (1) thing they would actually choose for themselves. And then it didn't happen, and we all went wtf

anyone else like literally traumatized by deans death or... i can not see that scene and feel okay at all.
