"Odysseus should have chosen himself," "Odysseus should have chosen his crew!" Odysseus was forced to make an impossible choice that went against his morals as punishment for daring to be kind, for daring to have mercy. The gods described it as hubris and pride, when really it was power all along. It was kindness that pushed Circe to help him, kindness that made Athena guide his son and even sacrifice herself for him before Zeus. The problem was not Odysseus's virtue—it was the gods' lack of it. If Odysseus was able to spare his enemies and live without consequence, how would that reflect on the all-powerful yet cruel gods killing anyone who challenged them? Who would worship them then? The Odyssey is a story of kindness' fight against cruelty and how community and help is not profitable for the people in power. It's a tragedy.

And a critique of neoliberalism as well as capit- okay, perhaps Homer did not live in the 21st century.
