É o ajustamento de situações sempre novas que modificam tanto o organismo como o ambiente, que o crescimento e o tipo de tempo que os organismos têm - porque cada objeto científico tem seu próprio tipo de tempo. Para uma história, a novidade e a irreversibilidade são essenciais. Um animal que está tentando completar sua vida está necessariamente buscando seu crescimento. Eventualmente o animal declina e morre, não porque ele buscando uma ordem de estrutura inferior, mas porque o campo como um todo não pode mais organizar-se com aquela parte sob aquela forma.
