#45 Paul Goodman Changed My Life (2011)

A biography / documentary on one of the noted counter culture intellectuals of the 1960’s. I was not aware of Paul Goodman, and I don’t really know how I missed…he certainly was in the close orbit of others I have read, or were familiar with, during the time period. I was too young to be counted among the generation that was Goodman’s audience. In hindsight, I feel like America has had to do a bit of re-calibrating on Vietnam and the fundamental reason for our government’s involvement. This issue is fundamental to Paul Goodman, and my opinion is that with some time and distance, history has verified what the left wing activists of the 60’s were vocal about. Goodman was blacklisted for a time in his career. And by the end, Goodman seems to have all but lost the torch-bearing, idealist, connection to the youth of that time period, and was frequently mocked and dismissed. If his political provocations didn’t incite you, then his openly bi-sexual life style did. It is tempting to try and wonder what kind of reception his ideas might have in 21st century America. I guess a better question might be, would he be treated the same way? By virtue of time, we might like to think ourselves a bit smarter / wiser than the generation of the 60’s, but I can easily see some of his moral /intellectual points getting lost in today’s high volume chatter that is more pre-occupied about the perceived inconsistencies of his character.

A good film, an interesting time capsule into a time period in American political history where a public intellectual could actually get a word out and affect change. If anything, the movie left me thinking about the 1960’s in American history, as it was confronted by this poet /writer/anarchist / pacifist.

Paul Goodman was born to a Jewish family in New York City. He was a bisexual American author who spoke of social criticism. His most common works are “Growing Up Absurd” and “Kafka’s Prayer”.
