That’s worse, though. If it was real there would be action against the teacher. Instead it just shows how fucked up our attitudes are that we would get excited and root for that kind of thing to really happen. This is how hate crimes get started, when you not only condone but encourage violence against someone for their views. Public lynchings didn’t just happen out of the blue. They had root causes in the contemporary local culture. In these days the internet makes everything local and we can spread vileness much faster. I know I’m a killjoy by adding commentary to these kinds of stories, but it is very important that we make it abundantly clear that this is reprehensible behavior and should not be spread, especially when you’re presenting it as something that really happened.
