Working in the industry of nursing is misunderstood, overlooked and devalued. I have been a Veterinary Nurse for a little over two years now which is just a drop in the ocean with both experience and knowledge but it opens up so many thoughts and emotions that you believe to be dead.
All nurses are unique but share the same compassion, caring nature and dedication. These traits are paramount to overcome the stress; the gruesome; the animal abuse; the neglect and the secrets of visions we have seen. We do not judge but we mend, fix and aspire to give joy and happiness. This trinity that we try to apply is a journey, sometimes filled with agonising waits on test results to prove/rule out Cancer, Cushings, Addison or other debilitating diseases even terminal.
I see the sun dissipate on the horizon with a car pulling up from a phone call I took some minutes ago. A serious case that causes quite some discomfort to their companion, not a pet or animal but a family member that is struggling to walk. In the car park with a colleague yet also a friend of mine awaiting them to pile out of the car to commence treatment on their family member. They fight back tears, grown men and women much senior to myself, as I lift this dog that has torn ligaments in the back leg as it did one year ago on the other. This client knows the process is scared and in shambles. You comfort them both “I will take care of “Henry” and do my utmost to make him comfortable” and my friend the vet “I will fix “Henry” making him comfortable to go home and live out his days.”
We do this not only to help ease the pain but you are leaving a family member in our care for some days to come. These promises I put forward are not lightly they mean overtime, hard work, stress and finesse in my profession. Behind close doors I prepare a Bed to give shelter to your pain, pain medication in a form of an opiate that requires an injection into muscle, capable bedding to slowly ease the pain and most of all the toilet walks so that “Henry” will not feel embarrassed having to defecate or urinate on oneself because he can no longer brace to do so. I will provide this care to fur-fill the trinity promise.
Nurses don’t just answer calls, clean and be the doctors/vets slave.
We adhere to instructions from our doctors for procedures.
We perform pathological test.
We prepare surgery including Pre-meds and Induction.
We are all-round nurses - Recumbent/Paediatric/Neonate/Rehabilitation.
We are masters of the signs of grief whether it be the 5,6 or 7 signs.
We care for the client that has brought their family member to us because they are a mix of emotions from helplessness, guilt, sorrow and many more. We want to provide care that both takes the pain away from you and your companion. Trinity to your family.
