(If you haven't answered this before) how do you do shading?

i havent !! and. i cant say this is gonna be any help but heres some of the things i try to keep in mind when im shading stuff

so youve got your flats on your initial drawing, the thing thats getting the business

then youve got find out where the light is coming from ! your light source is gonna determine where all the highlights and shadows are cast, and while it doesnt have to be EXACT, its generally a good rule to keep it pretty consistent through the drawing - sometimes youll probably have to deal with multiple sources, and each ones gonna be casting its own light and shadow ( and color by extension )

the intensity and sharpness of your shadows generally also reflects the brightness or closeness of the light ! basically if you wanna make something look BRIGHT, you gotta make sure the shadows are dark enough to get the idea across

so the actual shading part - the way i shade is by getting a brush on a very low opacity, picking the color i want for shadows and then layering the strokes over and over until i get about the darkness i want ( because im LAZY and i dont actually work with complex backgrounds a bunch, i can usually get away with drawing the shadows directly on the locked flat colors layer so theres nothing to clean up after )

afterwards i clean it up a little if i need to, add highlights while keeping in mind where the light is coming from, and start on the Detail Work ( it also might be helpful to keep in mind that highlights dont always go on the EDGE of things, but rather where the curve of something is - where the light would catch. this can help add a little depth and make flat things look rounded out ! )

and THEN its basically me zooming into the drawing at least 200%, putting another layer over the top of everything, and going over the outlines with a tiny brush so the harsh black is mostly gone ! there shouldnt be anything along the edge thats darker than the darkest part of the shadow ( with exceptions like the eyes and nostrils )

and thats mostly it ! i picked red for the shadow color, but picking your shading ( and flats ! ) based on the colors in your background can go a LONG way into making it seem like your character is actually in the environment

reflective light is also an important thing to keep in mind when choosing shadows and highlights - light and color doesnt always just hit an object and stay there, and even in the shade there could be light bouncing back from stuff like water or grass creating smaller, subtle highlights along the edges of things close by

not everything reflects the same way either ! something like a piece of wood is going to react differently than say, a metal ball

so you get your light source, basic highlights and shadows, not bad ! but then theres ALSO the light reflecting from the rest of the environment along the edge of the ball, and then finally the color from both the dragon and the ball reflecting a bit on each other

 honestly though these arent RULES of drawing and more just guidelines i work with sometimes, and maybe your style of shading and highlighting looks completely different than this and thats ok !! - im still figuring a bunch of stuff out about light and reflections myself, and the great thing about art is that you can do whatever the hell you want with it

to be quite frank, keeping the art style simple in mob psycho 100 was bloody genius because thats kinda the point of the whole show. it runs off the fact that mob is an average everyday kid and that despite having psychic power his life doesn’t change drastically, he’s not popular for having them, he still struggles with expressing himself and he doesn’t win the girl he likes over because he has powers. and that reflects itself in the art style of how he is every normal day.

and then theres the switch where all his emotions come rushing out, even the lineart starts to move and he explodes when he hits that 100% and all of a sudden he looks really damn intense and cool and the juxtaposition of him changing from an average kid to this makes for some really awesome visual contrast.

ok last post im gonna make abt this cuz a lot of ppl r confused whats going on and its summer so i have time 2 mess around on tumblr. 

basically, this started when an international tribunal (fancy word 4 court) ruled that chinas claims to the south china sea had no legal basis and were invalid. this case was filed by the philippines back in 2013 bc china was doing all kinds of stuff in the sea bc they claimed the territory was their own. u can read more about it here. 

anyways, this sparked a wave of rly intense chinese nationalism which ofc started on weibo and began the hashtag #中国一点都不能少 (left pic) which roughly translates to “china, not a single bit can be left out” and its been circulating w/ this image of a map of china that has a line drawn around the south china sea, along w/ taiwan in the picture. 

almost every mainland chinese celebrity has been posting this hashtag as well (everybody….angelababy, fan bingbing, huang xiaoming, lu han, zitao, yixing, victoria, lin yun, yang mi, etc etc etc) and its also led to really really REALLY gross comments about vietnamese and philippinx people specifically, from mainland china on social media. 

so thats what the situation is and u should hold ur favs accountable for posting this bc the harm its done to southeast asian ppl in particular is disgusting and shameful. esp celebs like victoria who have posted it on instagram, which is blocked in china and how she communicates w/ her non-chinese fans. shes getting praised for it on weibo (right pic). 

its also important to remember that chinese celebrities do not hold the same agency and public clout that us celebrities do, and they basically cant speak out against mainstream opinions even if they hold different views themselves. so keep that in mind too, bc its very easy to view this from an ethnocentric pov, me included. ok thats it thats the deal. we need to talk about chinese imperialism is the main point

for ppl who are wondering about the political situation between china and southeastern countries rn!

this is mostly being brought to light due to how visible idols are, specifically kpop idols who are ethnically chinese. as public figures it’s good to be critical of a celebrity’s actions but please don’t let it overtake the focus of the discussion. there are extremely racist images and comments that are being circulated that target vietnamese and filipinx people. the mistreatment of se asians should not be only discussed in conjunction with what an idol may/may not be supporting, bc it feels like we are being talked over when we are the ones being relentlessly attacked 

as iris (the OP) and i have talked about in our PMs, historically there has been an imbalance of visibility and political power in favor of east asian countries over se asian countries. having the south sea issue derailed to conversations about calling out idols and seeing who will fck up next for expressing nationalist support feeds into se asians being overlooked

also wanted to add that while many east / southeast asian countries have been victims of chinese imperialism, historically and in modern times they have been treated differently (japan and korea have always been viewed as having a “higher status” than their southeast asian counterparts) and regarding this case specifically, the conversation should be centered around southeast asian voices. i understand that bringing up chinese imperialism as a general topic invites discussion from all different ethnicities / perspectives, but for the current situation it’s important that we focus on southeast asian (particularly philippinx, vietnamese, malaysian, and bruneian) points of view.

What the fuck Hussie??? That was actually it? There are so many loose ends I can’t even count them! But now you’re “thinking about” an epilogue that you’re not sure “what specific form” to give and that you’re “not in a huge hurry” for??

You didn’t finish the story!!!

The only way this epilogue can work is if it’s a sit-down explanation of what the fuck just happened plus a whole bunch of other shit, which is not how writing is supposed to fucking work. The piece is supposed to speak for itself, or at the very least be complete so that the audience can piece it together themselves. You can’t just show beautiful animation for a climax and then explain months afterward why the animation was significant! It’s like buying a sofa and then finding out it’s from fucking IKEA and half the pieces are missing and have to be mail-ordered in!!!

What happened with Vriska’s arc?? Terezi? Their (alpha timeline) ghosts?? Is their half-assed moiralliegance going to mentioned or is that just getting ignored?

Why was Rose’s quest so frequently referenced if she never even ended up trying it?

Where the ever-loving fuck happened to Droog?

What happened to Davepeta? What happened to the other sprites? Jasprose? The ghosts? Aradia? Sollux? THE FUCKING FELT??? 

Why did Jack English’s head turn into a black hole? What was the point of the Immortality Curse between the Condesce and the Handmaiden if the Batterwitch could be taken down with one stab to the back and no repercussions???

Why did Caliborn know about Erisolsprite in spite of the retcon?

All right, if there is some crazy genius answer for this shit squirreled away in the details, then hey, I can be wrong about stuff and I’m always ready to admit it. If this is pulling a Neon Genesis and you’ve got to read a novel’s worth of theories just to argue about what it might have meant? Fair enough, if anything would be justified in doing that then Homestuck would. And yeah, Homestuck’s always had the ‘fill in the blanks yourself element’ but not on this fucking level.

OpenToonz is the Open Source version of Toonz, the animation software used by Studio Ghibli and Futurama’s animators. The software was developed by the Italian Digital Video and this free version was created by Dwango in collaboration with Digital Video and Studio Ghibli.
