As someone who just kinda stumbled into the role of commander, Degga had an impressive background on paper but ultimately failed as a leader. Indecisive, slow to act, lacking confidence, and overwhelmed by the weight of their responsibilities, they failed to gain the respect of many of the people they commanded. The number of high profile deaths and disappearances under their command didn't help. Marshall Trahearne's tragic fate was a major blow to both their image as a competent leader and their belief in their own abilities.

They were initially a member of the priory, and intended to stay there, but they often found theirself in positions where they either were thrust into major conflicts or assumed it was up to them to take charge. They were widely known for their victories but those who worked more closely with them often questioned their leadership abilities. Fortunately they had forged close bonds with the other members of Destiny's Edge, and later Dragon's Watch, who cared deeply for them and sympathized with their faults.

After defeating Mordremoth at the expense of losing Trahearne and others to the dragon, and leading the charge into Elona, Degga started having heavy doubts about their place in all of it. They struggled with the toll of war on those fighting it, and were deeply overwhelmed by the trauma and heartache it caused them. As they learned of the magical consequences of killing the dragons and the effect it had on the environment, they began to lose faith in their cause. Faced with the missions of killing yet another dragon and an actual god, they realized they were in too deep. They couldn't sleep, could barely eat, and they began to further decline in their leadership. They became even less well liked among the ranks after they made mistake after mistake, and failed to earn the confidence of the people of Elona.
