LMAO I haven’t written fanfic in years but JATP really got me so.. Bobby therapy session post the initial haunting??
She was staring at him sympathetically as he finished describing the events of the last few hours. He knew where this was headed before she even opened her mouth.
“I know you remember the last few times something like this happened -”
“There’s something different about it this time.” His voice held more confidence than he actually felt. He watched as his therapist glanced down at the paper in her lap. “I know this was real”.
She smiled slightly. “I’m not saying that this comes down to real or not real”. The ticking of the clock on the wall seemed suddenly louder. “Not necessarily. I know that it can seem… Trevor -”
He shifted uncomfortably in his seat at the mention of the name. “It was different,” he cut her off. “The door - and, my name on the mirror -”
“And why is that more real than the other times?”
Because there had been other times.
“Why is this different from the time you saw Alex in the garage?”
He is seventeen, sitting in the room where he and his band used to practice, sorting through their stuff. The things that their parents hadn’t wanted. As he holds a pale pink hoodie in his hands, he thinks he sees something out of the corner of his eye. He looks up. And sees him. Sitting at the drums. Just like he used to. Staring at him. And suddenly, he can’t breathe. He stands. His whole body feels numb. He says his friend’s name.
The other boy doesn’t respond. He only stares.
His voice shakes as words tumble from his mouth. He tells his silent friend how much he misses him. How nothing is the same now -
He reaches out with a trembling hand to touch his shoulder and suddenly it is like he was never there. He hadn’t thought he could have possibly felt any more alone.
“Or the time you heard Reggie’s laugh down by the beach?”
It’s his eighteenth birthday. His mom had wanted to celebrate. She baked his favorite cake, filled the living room with his favorite colored balloons, even put together a CD with every one of her son’s favorite songs that she could remember, only mixing up a few. It was the guest list that was the problem.
Because when the lights were flicked on and everyone yelled ‘surprise’, he had looked around at a sea of faces he barely recognized, and it made it all too clear who was still missing.
It had been almost a year and he had wanted to be able to handle it - he knew that all she wanted was to see her kid smile again - but he couldn’t. So he finds himself walking along the shore in front of the now empty house where his friend had once lived.
And he wasn’t paying quite enough attention to where he was going, because the dog comes out of nowhere. A big chocolate lab with the warmest eyes and a collar that read ‘Daisy’. He is on his back in an instant, with giant paws pressing down on his ribcage. And that’s when he hears it.
He shoots up and looks around, expecting to see the bright smile he hadn’t been able to clear from his mind. But he’s alone. The dog’s wide eyes seem to look at him sadly now. He supposes that can’t be right either.
“And that show? Where you said Luke sang with you?”
