Or we all saw this one coming.

They should have seen this one coming, really. Everything was going way too smoothly, too good to be true.

Aemie's eyes wondered around the lab, looking outside the window for a second and noticing a small cabin without windows.

At best her friends were there, but maybe at this point they were dead or in some kind of torture chamber. She wouldn't put it past Julian at this point.

The lab's doors were watched with guards of some sort, Julian's experiments. People whose pain Aemie recognized, the one she had been dreading for ages.

They didn't have much time left, yet they clung to their loyalty to her godfather just to get a little more time alive even if it had to be spent like this.

The luckiest ones lived for about a month or two at best, the other ones lasted for a week or a little less alive. That was how this system worked, that was why she used to be his special experiment.

The only one who reached a higher longevity, the captain of his tropes. His little trophy.

None of the guards had more than a few hours left, or at least judging from the way they looked. They were scared, they didn't deserve this at all.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a voice coming from behind her.

"Ah, my dear goddaughter. I see you're awake, yes?" Julian's voice sent a chill down her spine.

He lifted her chin, smirking at her in a cruel way and making her feel even more powerless in that table. Spread apart like a specimen he was about to study.

< Or rather he had already studied... > she recalled, feeling the blood dripping from her chest. He wasn't even done yet, the stitches holding her wounds together were messily done on purpose because he planned on opening her up again.

"Your hair is ruined, love. But I must admit that it makes your face look even cuter" he caressed her left cheek.

Mental note: cut off my side bangs.

"I couldn't care less about what you like about me" Aemie snarled back, before biting his hand hard.

Julian pulled back, hissing in pain with certain amusement.

"Oh? I see your friends have been a bad influence on you, hmm? I'll take that into count when it's their time to be punished." the scientist ruffled the nephilim's halfa's hair.

So they're still alive, that's reliving at least. Now, she just needed a quick distraction. Maybe she could-?

An explosion was heard near coming from the cabin. Evan was definitely in there, and she was definitely making him solding gloves after this.

The halfa used her last forces and the adrenaline flooding in her veins to make her legs go through the restrains that held her in the table.

She kicked him on the crotch, then on the chin.

She knew how they looked at her, envy because she would survive this yet pity because what was life if that man was controlling it? Was it really worth calling life something like that? Being someone's puppet? Being someone's little project for their own amusement?

Julian stumbled back, kneeling in pain as he chuckled. He grabbed a pair of medical scissors, slowly getting up again and the girl got suddenly self aware of her situation.

Aemie's eyes locked with one of the guards, she thought what would happen to them. Was Julian taking care of the experiments like she did? Or was he more rough than before? What would happen if-?

Her thoughts were interrupted as one of the guards punched Julian, as the other freed Aemie.

She wondered for a second what they were doing, before realising that this was their last chance of making an actual difference. They could stop him, they could break the cycle.

The guard holding her tried to tell her something, but she didn't need to understand them to know what they were planning. She just nodded along, they carried her as the other guard held Julian.

Aemie barely managed to paralyze the crazy scientist, feeling the stitches pulling apart.

They burst open the door just in time to see certain duo standing outside.

Leo: Hey so, eh... Where are you? I haven't heard from you guys in a while, are you ok?

Her head wasn't in the right place, everything felt wrong yet famllar in some weird way.

She could feel the cold slowly eating away her energy, why was she in this place to begin with?

She couldn't feel her legs, it hurt and she was lost and where was her best friend?.

It was like a deja vu, maybe a dream she had before or mayhaps an old story she didn't want to remember.

On the good side, nothing seems out of place... Yet. No sightings of Julian and so far no one asked anything weird.

There was a soft knock on the door, Aemie stood at the other end of the door.

"Dad? May I come in, please?"

Danny has never opened the door faster than he did now. "AEMIE!" He smiled brightly and without a hesitation, embracing her in his arms tightly.

The hug was sudden, confusing her but the ghost girl quickly recovered hugging her father back.

"Good evening dad"

"My sweet baby, I missed you." He carried her as if she was still his baby girl.

"Dad, I missed you too but I'm not a child-" she huffed but didn't try to stop him.

"You'll always be my little girl no matter how much you grow." Danny laughed softly as they walked to the kitchen where Cujo and the other pets were eating, Polaris sitting on the window and eating on a bird feeder.

Aemie sighed but smiled at him before turning to see the pets. As tempting as kneeling down to pet all of them was, she knew better than bother them while eating.

"And you'll always be my dad, no matter what. Even if I haven't been a child in a long time"

"Ya want cookies or brownies?" Danny asked, opening the fridge as there were desserts he'd baked the day before.

"Mmm... Cookies, I like them better" Aemie replied while she leaned into the countertop.

"Ooo! Alright," Danny hummed softly, opening the cookie jar and giving a plate to her over the counter. "What brings you to visit, hun?"

Aemie picked up a cookie, bit it and cleared her throat. "I... Need some help regarding something about my ghost form"

"Is that so? What's it about?" He tilts his head curiously.

Aemie blushed a little from embarrassment, it was a little humiliating to have to ask for help for her new development.

"I... May or may have grown wings in my ghost form. I thought it was the phantom pain of those wings anons gave me months ago and that have already vanished, but I was wrong"

"Oh my...." Danny looked surprised, even a little perplexed. "Hm, evolving, do you need help with your wings? What is it, hun?" He looked at Aemie with gentle eyes.

I forgot how to take care of them. I forgot how it felt to have actual natural wings.

"I'm... Not quite sure how to groom them" she mumbled, looking down.

Danny hummed as he started walking towards the living room, "Come, I'll preen your feathers for you." He said, still gentle.

Aemie followed behind, ashamed to be asking him about this but at least relieved that someone else could help her with her problem.
