Darrow/Sevro Ship Manifesto: Morning Star edition
aka every single line I highlighted while wearing ship goggles. If I knew this was how my reading experience was going to go, I would have been noting lines since Red Rising. But alas,,
Ch. 8: "He never stopped looking for you," Dancer explains. "I thought he was mad. He said you weren't dead. That he could feel it. That he would know.
Ch. 9: His eyes dance as he sees me, and he tosses Ella roughly onto a bed and charges toward me, arms outstretched. A weird laugh escapes his chest, hatchet face split with a jagged grin.
Ch. 9: He half laughs, half cries like an excited dog into my chest.
Ch. 9: "So I asked if he'd put 'em in. You know. Bring us closer together. Something to remember you by. That's not so weird, right?"
Ch. 11: It makes me feel safe knowing [Ragnar's] here. Knowing he's with me. Like I thought I would feel near Sevro. But he's changed.
Ch. 17: And she tried to kill Sevro. Bad play.
Ch. 18: Sevro snorts. "What about Moira? Had no problem frying her, but you spare him."
Ch. 18: And as we pretend to be brave, we become so. All except Sevro, who remains silent as we fly into space.
Ch. 20: Sevro's quiet. Hurt.
Ch. 20: I wheel on the small man, picking him up with one hand and pinning him against the ceiling. "Don you say a damn thing about [Sevro]."
Ch. 21: [Sevro's] moral creed has always been simple: protect your friends, to hell with everyone else.
Ch. 21: "Or did you do what you wanted to? Because your feelings were hurt? Because you wanted to lash out?"
The entirety of chapter 22 tbh
Ch. 22: I don't hold him, but I put a hand on his head. And he surprises me by not flinching away, but instead crawling up to put his head on my knee. I put my other hand on his shoulder.
Ch. 22: "That's how I feel every morning now. I'm afraid all the time. I don't want to lose anyone. I don't want to let them down."
Ch. 22: [Sevro] needs to share the weight. I don't know how else to tell him that.
Ch. 22: He shrugs. "Was afraid you wouldn't want me."
Ch. 22: Right now I'd say anything to make him feel like he's loved.
Ch. 22: But it's this bond that Sevro and I share that makes us stronger than we were before.
Ch. 23: "Howler One," Sevro says, punching my shoulder. "Howler Tow," I say, patting his in turn.
Ch. 32: I pray silently for Sevro's safety, for Victra's and the Howlers.
Ch. 35: Sevro waits beside Dancer and Mickey. He slams me into a hug.
Ch. 35: Yet I stay for Sevro.
Ch. 35: Damn the world, so long as I have my mangy little guardian angel.
Ch. 35: "You don't think you've gotten a chance to live?" I ask. "Not proper," he says.
Ch. 35: "But it'd be nice to just be Sevro.
Ch. 35: "You and I keep looking for light in the darkness, expecting it to appear. But it already has." I touch his shoulder. "We're it, boyo.
Ch. 38: Sevro looks at me in annoyance
Ch. 39: People who he loved as much as I love Sevro and Ragnar.
Ch. 40: "Why would I need air support when I've got you," I say, gesturing to Sevro's gravBoots.
Ch. 43: They will hunt my friends. They will say Sevro's name, and Mustang's and Ragnar's because they do not yet know he is gone form us.
Ch. 44: "[Sevro's] heart's a black little thing. But it can break.
Ch. 50: Like Mustang, the little Gold came for me, in case I needed him. [...] Loyalty is everything to him.
Ch. 51: I'm woken from a restless dream by Sevro.
Ch. 52: "I was watching," Sevro says. "I was always watching."
Ch. 53: Sevro rushes onto the bridge
Ch. 54: "Justice," Victra says, drawing a look from Sevro.
Ch. 54: I'm not witnessing the death of a friend as much as I'm seeing the rebirth of another.
Ch. 54: I watch in awe of Sevro as he bounds up onto the railing, arms wide, embracing his army.
Ch. 54: It's a man I would die to protect even as he dies to save the soul of this rebellion.
Ch. 55: I kiss the top of his head.
Ch. 55: *Darrow and Sevro bicker* "Do they always do this?" Virany asks Mustang.
Ch. 55: I've never seen Sevro so happy.
Ch. 57: "Darrow here gets all sad thinkin' of that. And I don't like sad Darrow."
Ch. 57: Life without love is the worst prison of all.
Ch. 57: Sevro's eyes are huge, staring at me in fear.
Ch. 58: Sevro's blood drips down my face.
Ch. 63: "Get your dog off me," the Jackal says from under Sevro's knees. I pull Sevro back.
Epilogue, emphasis mine: the love of Sevro
Love wins, but sometimes love also loses. Love is for the losers too. Love is love.
"The Garden of Collective Memory" by Neon Yang from the anthology Amplitudes: stories of queer and trans futurity, edited by Lee Mandelo
He should be my simplest, strongest friendship. But because of loss, everything is twisted between us. Even with him there's so many layers to the pain. So many levels of fear and recrimination and guilt for both of us. They once called Sevro my shadow. He's not any longer. And I think I've been bitter at him these last hours because they're proof of that. He's his own man with his own tides. Just as I think he's been bitter with me because I didn't come back as the Reaper. I came back a man he didn't recognize. And now that I'm trying to be the force he wanted, the force that's making decisions, he doubts me because he senses weakness and that's always made him afraid.
Morning Star by Pierce Brown
I was inspired to make a reading bingo for my bday! Here's a blank version if you want to do it, too. You can follow the prompts as loosely as you want. For example, reading a book set in your birthplace can mean the city you were born in, or the region, or country, or the same hemisphere lol. One book can count for multiple prompts, too, just have fun with it. I'm gunning for a board blackout with eight different books :> Happy reading!
I finally finished my bday bingo! Here are my fills, in plain text:
A book published in my birth year: A Kiss of Shadows - Laurell K. Hamilton
A book with a similar aged protagonist: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - Edward Albee
A book with a blue cover: Immaculate Conception - Ling Ling Huang
Reread a fave book: Macbeth
Free space with a green flower-shaped bead
A book set in my birthplace: American Rapture - CJ Leede
A new release: The Obake Code - Makana Yamamoto
A book in my favorite genre (scifi/specfic): We Are The Crisis - Cadwell Turnbull
A book published in April: Wife Shaped Bodies - Laura Cranehill
This was my first time doing a book bingo and it was hard LOL. But I had fun. tbh I already have a 2027 bingo drafted up, but I'll probably keep it private for myself. I'm realizing now I may have jumped the gun in making my billionth sideblog that I might not even update in the next few months. I'm still debating whether or not I should start writing online reviews, since I already talk about books irl with friends. Like, do people here even care about my opinions? I already post quotes on here, what parts of this hobby should remain private? But also it would be good writing practice to critique everything I read. IDK I literally started keeping a reading journal this year. Time will tell, I guess.
It's also just really fun to make bingo boards. I'm still getting the hang of LibreOffice and I'm discovering so many features by designing challenges like these. Hooray for creativity!
it’s crazy how much you can read if you read
I think perhaps the only way in which queer people have achieved true parity with straight people is that queer romantasy is just as bad.
Local ghoul discovers how to use the libby app (I now have 6 more books added to my read list🙃)
Believe ye that a mortal woman of my age, with a tope about her neck, hath power to prophesy? If ye do, give ear to my speech and remember my words. For death, ye shall have death! For blood, ye shall have blood--blood on the earth! Blood in the sky! blood in the waters! Ye shall drink blood and breathe blood, you and yours, for the work of this day!
Rachel Dyer by John Neal
You know not fully the cause of my sorrows. You are a stranger to the depth of my distresses. Hence your efforts at consolation must necessarily fail.
Wieland by Charles Brockden Brown
I could love you as dry roots love rain. I could hold you as branches in the wind brandish petals. Forgive me for speaking so soon.
"Offering and Rebuff" by Carl Sandburg
and you listen keen and you listen long and you know it's more than silence for you get the hush song so lovely it hurts and cuts into your heart
"Little Word, Little White Bird" by Carl Sandburg
Love dies always and when it dies it is dead And when it is dead there is nothing more to it And when there is nothing more to it then we say This is the end, it comes always, it came to us.
"Kisses, Can You Come Back Like Ghosts?" by Carl Sandburg
Now we shall open boxes and look. In this one a storm was locked up, hoarse from long howling. In this one lay fair weather, a blue sky manuscript. In this one unfolded a gray monotone of a fog afternoon. In each box was a day and its story of air and wind. Sometimes one shook with confusions, processionals of weather. "One day may be too much to gather, consider, and look among keepsakes."
"Keepsake Boxes" by Carl Sandburg
