Ed + how knowing Stede has changed him
the decrease in costuming quality over the last 20 years has been soooo precipitous & nauseating. i’m not even talking abt marvel’s cg supersuits or anything this time, look at the fabric quality, structure, layering, character, and craftsmanship of older costumes in 102 dalmations (2000) vs cruella (2021)
ever after (1998) vs cinderella (2021)
lord of the rings (2001-2003) vs the rings of power (2022)
this trend should upset you not just because it looks cheap, but because it suggests a strong anti-art and anti-labor movement in film and tv making. don’t forget costumers are unionized
Ok, but what is happening here is not a degradation of skill. At all. The number of phenomenally talented and knowledgable Costumiers and maker working is astounding. The only thing more astounding is how little they are being properly utilised.
What is happening is a degradation of production schedules. Prep time is constantly being shrunk to the absolute bare minimum which limits design time, fitting time, r&d, sourcing (materials, hardware habdash, etc), making time (drafting, construction, embellishment, etc). Additionally budgets - despite the ridiculous sums of money being sunk - are becoming more shrunk, focused and scrutinised. That feeds back into the materials available (and a dependency on what IS available?, but also staffing levels - smaller workrooms, limited outsourcing etc etc. Schedules are not locked down at all. Ever. Even more so in these Covid times. Scripts aren’t locked down. Ever. Because productions never consider the wider logistics of outlying departments like costume, props etc.
Cast is increasingly last minute, w negotiations dragging out. This limits contact time for development and conception (actors must also be involved int he design process), fittings, etc. I did a job last year where - aside from our two leads - we had zero cast until the week we started shooting which meant we could only do extremely linited advance work plus we had a minuscule team despite being for a huge streaming platform with major stars. On another job we had three (3) days between a principle actor needing a visually iconic costume being cast and being ON CAMERA.
Additionally it is becoming increasingly common for actors to expect higher use of doubles - both stunt and picture doubles m. That means, simply, more costume as they all must have their own. Often in multiples. This with the commonality of stunts means that sometimes as much as 20+ repeats of element of a costume are needed, depending on necessity. That means fabrics are needed in huge quantities, and workrooms must effectively have factory productions. This paired with scheduling limitations above means more often than not we must use what we can get immediately. You know if you could have even a week to source something from, say, Italy, you can get something divine. But there just isn’t the time because you need 60m of specific fabric yesterday. There’s not time to get things made.
So the entire process is streamlined into what can be made in quantity and quickly. Everyone mourns what could be made if we only had the time, money and resources. Everyone know what we could be achieving, should be achieving and want to be achieving. But we just can’t because everything is about immediate, constantly shifting deadlines, high demands and logistics. It’s a nightmare, and we’re all very very tired. As with everything it’s all part of corporate greed. And I haven’t even gone into the twenty levels of executive meddling and the endless rounds of approvals (plus marketing and merchandising approvals etc etc etc it’s unending.)
I’ve been working in film costume for coming on 12 years (ugh), and it has gotten noticeably worse on all of these fronts in just the decade plus I’ve been around. Even in the last five years.
Stardew Valley is wild cause it’s this fun wholesome little game where you raise animals and grow crops and get married but it also has monsters and dwarves and the mayor and rancher lady are secretly fucking and it’s heavily implied the shop owner’s daughter is actually an illegitimate child his wife had with the local wizard and there’s a note from your grandpa saying he’s gonna return from the grave and visit you on the dawn of your third year in the valley
Don’t forget that the country you’re in is being invaded by a much larger nation, one of your fellow townspeople has PTSD from being tortured in a POW camp and it’s causing him to lash out at his wife, one of the marriage candidates lives in an abusive household, another one is suicidally depressed, the mayor is using taxpayers’ money to build solid gold statues of himself while the infrastructure crumbles but everybody’s so disenfranchised with politics that nobody ever stands against him for election and, oh yes, the main plot of the game is that a supermarket is trying to destroy the town so that they can stripmine the local area.
Okay but this is probably the post that will make me buy this game like
What the fuck I thought it was just a farming sim

also explains why conservatives and neoliberal centrists actually prefer higher tuition fees rather than making tertiary education free.
‘we only succeed when voters are dumb and gullible’ is a very telling admission

butches don’t dress like men. men dress like butches and they do it wrong. signed god herself
i just read a washington post article on romcoms aging poorly due to the pushiness (and oft-stalkery conduct) of the male characters therein, and it got me thinking about pride and prejudice, and specifically darcy saying, “one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”
because, like, that’s the seldom-portrayed romantic dream in the patriarchal hellscape that is our world, isn’t it?
a dude being willing to say, “i understand if you don’t feel the same way about me, and i’ll leave you alone forever about this if my attention is unwanted.”
so simple, yet so wonderful in its basic human decency
and dudes to this day wonder why women still swoon over darcy
Note also: Elizabeth turns down Darcy’s first proposal, and in the process, accuses him of doing some stuff he did not do (and also some stuff he totally did).
The next day, he surprises her on her walk. He hands her a letter, asks that she read it, and then takes off.
When this happened to me after I had turned someone down IN REAL LIFE, the letter contained a passionate argument to the tune of “actually you’re wrong and you do like me and you should go out with me” and it was creepy af.
Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth starts with: “Be not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter, by the apprehension of its containing any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers, which were last night so disgusting to you”. He goes on to set the record straight about the stuff he didn’t do (as well as the stuff he did) which is *actually relevant* to Elizabeth. And he, as promised, doesn’t romance her further.
It’s totally bizarre that even now, this can be considered unusually great dude behaviour.
Darcy’s first proposal: “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
Darcy’s second proposal: “One word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”
His whole arc in the book is about learning to consider other people’s feelings and not just his own, but the fact that it’s expressed via who gets to talk and who is told to shut up is so, so telling. The first time around, he imposes his voice on her whether she wants it or not. The second time, he asks how she feels, and in exchange, offers her the gift of his silence.
And yeah, the fact that dudes still! have! not! learned! this! lesson! is exhausting.
How surprising is it that Pride and Prejudice was written by a woman, when many romantic comedies are produced and directed by men?
Answer: not at all
200 years later and the world is still full of guys who think they’re a Mr Darcy when they’re actually a Mr Collins.
200 years later and the world is still full of guys who think they’re a Mr Darcy when they’re actually a Ross Geller.
But they value our lives even less
Ok but look:
I’m really screaming
he was planning on eating the baby 😭
Ok, as a biology major, y’all need to chill. Snakes this big are incredibly docile. They have been bred this way. Furthermore, the person taking care of this animal could not properly take care of them if they did not feed them regularly and well. This child is in no more danger than if she was sitting next to a big dog.
Oh, and on snake yawning, the person above is wrong (SOURCE 1; SOURCE 2)
Please don’t demonize snakes people they’re amazing creatures and clearly this one means no harm
snakes are literally just noodle puppies you guys need to chill
