I still remember the amazed and confused feelings that arose as a high school friend introduced me to the song “Blood” by Candiria from the record “What Doesn’t Kill You Will Make You Stronger” While it took some effort, I’m very grateful the collective members who were part of Candiria in that their music contributed to me having a more open perspective on what I listen to and not getting so caught up on the preposterous invention that is genres. 

Today, I’m glad to hear the first of 12 new songs that will make the entirety of a new full-length record from Candiria; entitled, “While They Were Sleeping”, this new effort is a concept record thought up by vocalist Carley Coma. I’d urge you to read the full description of the concept as well as some descriptions of other songs on the record via the pre-order/preview page that Metal Blade has made.

Mereya features elements of the musical freedom that has seemingly defined Candiria as much as it has left their creative output open to interpretation.  This album is also the debut of Julio Arias on rhythm guitar and Danny Grossarth on drums/percussion. A full US tour announcement is impending and in the meantime a tour of the 5 boroughs that make Candiria’s home of New York City has been announced for October. While They Were Sleeping is set for release on October 7th through @metalblade Records

Skyscraper, the closing of track from Touché Amoré’s fourth full-length LP entitled “Stage Four”. Featuring guest vocals from the fantastic singer-songwriter Julien Baker, this is a more “mature” song from Touché. Don’t misunderstand me, I don’t mean to seem condescending in using the word mature; it just seems fair to say that while punk and hardcore is for all ages and people, there is a certain element to music occasionally categorized as “adult-alternative”. 

An obvious influence upon a song like is The National, which if you’re aware of singer Jeremy Bolm’s love for the music of the National; you’’ find this to be no surprise. It’s actually thanks to Jeremy Bolm’s glowing social media posts about music by the National that led me to find their record “High Violet” at Amoeba records, and I’m very grateful for that fact. It seems their alternative music that can be played for “general audiences” and have them headline arenas/amphitheaters while also appealing to punk fans along the way in that it’s music made with intent. It’s “popular” music in that the band has attained notoriety to some degree, but it’s not derivative nor does it sound like it could be music made by any group of musicians thrown into a room with the right million dollar producer and a pro tools rig.

In this initial repeat listening experience, I’m getting lost in the soaring and ambient guitar sound on this track executed by the guitar duo of Nick Steinhardt & Clayton Stevens. There’s a certain expansive quality about it, I picture stained glass in my mind as the sun enlightens it in the afternoon. Anyone who has heard a more punk/hardcore leaning song from Touché Amoré’s discography is well aware of the incredible prowess possessed by Elliot Babin, and it’s nice to hear another dimension of his playing shown more often heard in his side-project Warm Thoughts(formerly known as Dad Punchers). 

I could go on, but at the end of the day it’s not for me to determine whether you like the direction Touché Amoré is taking their music, but I will say that I’m all the more eager to hear Stage Four after hearing “Skyscrapers” today. “Stage Four” will be released through Epitaph Records on the 16th of September; currently their finishing tour dates with Ceremony & Gouge Away before playing some festival dates as well as two special shows with Hum and regional guests with a US tour starting in October.

I’m on about my sixth or seventh listen of “Vorel”, the first new track to be revealed from Russian Circles’ upcoming record entitled “Guidance”. I’ve been a fan since around 2009 when their album, “Geneva”, was released and luckily saw them live on their 10th-anniversary tour with Mamiffer about a year and a half ago. Grouped into the “Post-rock” and “Metal” genres, Russian Circles has never been a band that any writer could box in with the aforementioned terms; and that is in par thanks to the amazing musical prowess possessed by the gentlemen of the band - Mike Sullivan on guitar, Brian Cook on bass, and Dave Turncrantz on drums. 

While I’m sure most any band would be lucky to play with one of these three musicians, the united force of these three men is amazing both on record and live. As you’ll hear on Vorel, they create soundscapes that are encompassing in the way rock music should be. It doesn’t ask for your attention, it demands your attention. Minutes pass by like seconds as the drums could remind someone of a roaring river. As the grinding of electric guitar begins to slice its way into the mix, a sonic adventure is off to a great start. To give even further rhythmic consistency and heft, right around the 2:15 mark, you begin to hear the bass fill out this already very full sounding song. About a minute later, you’re in the midst of a transition but the trance that has you locked in can’t be broken.

Essentially, if I could recommend any band that I feel sets a standard for how instrumental rock or metal can be played; I’d say it’s Russian Circles. Over five albums they continue to grow as musicians and don’t seem to ever create something without purpose. The first glimpse we have into the album, Magma. The first full-length release since The Way of All Flesh, Gojira has returned with some of their familiar heft and fury but also seem to have grown and reached into areas of influence that weren’t previously incorporated including some unorthodox guitar sounds as well as more natural clean vocals. #ThriceThursdays: “Words In The Water” - This is definitely one of my favorite songs that we have written, and one of my very favorite lyrics that I’ve penned. My brain naturally wants to write essays and call them songs, so I’ve been learning over time to tell stories and use pictures and I think this is one where I have succeeded in doing that well. I read once that C.S. Lewis’s fiction would generally start with a picture that was in his head. In the case of Narnia, the whole chronicles began this picture in his mind’s eye: a faun, with an umbrella, in a snowstorm, carrying a package. As far as I can tell this song started for me with an image as well. I saw someone standing in a river and a book in the river as well. Writing the rest of the song was more like what Steven King describes as the process of unearthing found things, like fossils. “Stories are relics,” he says “part of an undiscovered pre-existing world. The writer’s job is to use the tools in his or her toolbox to get as much of each one out of the ground intact as possible.” I’m glad I found this one and got most of it out of the ground.
