Thereโs something wrong with Annabelle โย which would be a greatย name for either a movie or her own personal memoir if she manages to live to the weekend. Annabelle Mallard, older sister, friend, beloved daughter, survivor, is almost certain that sheโs dying. When people contract rabies, they develop a fear of water. Despite the human body needing water to live, drinking causes them to be sick. Annabelle has never witnessed rabies before, but she hasย heard about it, and thereโs a worry in her mind that she has somehow acquired a mutated version of the virus, one thatโs made her fear food rather than water.ย
Sheโs tried eating. Crackers. Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches. Her favorite ice cream. It all ends up at the bottom of her toilet bowl. When she walks through the Grub Hub district, sauces and spices that typically remind her of home only make her stomach churn. Unable to keep anything down, sheโs certain sheโs dying.
What she believes to be her final footsteps take her from the Grub Hub foodies to the Uptown Graveyard. She doesnโt make it far enough to see her father ( and, truthfully, she doesnโt think she wants to see his name etched in stone ). Rather, Annabelle plants herself down at the first grave she sees, regardless of whoever might be morning or strolling by. The whole place smells like death. Her stomach grumbles. She peeks through her own curly bangs.ย โSorry. Do you know them?โ She canโt make out the epigraph on the stone sheโs laying in front of, but she does roll herself onto her side.ย โDidnโt mean to disturb. Iโll get out of your way โโ
โย โOh, itโs just my dadโs grave,โ she shrugs.ย โNo biggie.โย Heather offers a hapless shrug. She drives the tip of her left combat boot into a patch of weeds, twisting her ankle and grinding the withering plants into the ground until theyโre nothing. Thatโs as far as sheโll go in upkeeping the gravestone of Gilbert Gladstone. After her biological parents perished in a construction accident when she was hardly in kindergarten, heโd raised her alongside her godmother.
Neither were particularly healthy role models.
โHeโs not even in there,โ she adds. Heather thought that would make the situation better. Having said it aloud, however, she realized how it might give off the wrong impression. Sheโd never been talented with words; essays and presentations had always been a struggle for her, as she much preferred science where the finished projects spoke for themselves.ย โNot in the sad way,โ she says, quickly.ย โFaked his death.โ Heather removes her hands from the pockets of her leather bomber jacket and awkwardly itches her cheekbone with a short, stubby fingernail.ย โItโs just a fucked up placeholder now.โ
