After leaving the Chora church we wandered about until we found ourselves again at the aqueduct of Valens. It’s a great backdrop to day to day life here in Istanbul. Through one of its arches is the Women’s Market, of which more in the next post.

2nd November 2015. Basilica Cistern. Istanbul, Turkey.
A Roman built water storage facility for the palaces of Constantinople. When the rulers relocated to other areas of the city the cistern was left unused and was completely forgotten till 1545.
No one was interested in it until it was completely restored and opened as an attraction in 1987.
The Cistern is now one of Istanbul’s most unusual and visited sights. For all the world it’s like an underground temple.
Is there any particular reason for the head being upside down?
30th October 2015. Dolmabahce Palace Istanbul, Turkey
The last of the Ottoman Sultans lived here as did Ataturk, the first president of the Turkish Republic. It is beautifully maintained, full of Victorian furniture. Chandeliers hang in all of its large halls. It’s full of gifts from European Royal families that don’t exist any more. The palace itself looks like a grand cake. It’s setting beside the Bosphorous is gorgeous.
To get in your join a tour that whips round the palace. It’s a popular place and only limited people can visit at anyone time. This means there is never time to tarry and take it all in. The guide sharply asked the gentleman to stop taking photos. Guess who that was! It meant that we can include one of the two interior shots Steven snapped off before being banned.
Getting to the palace was a breeze: two stops on the underground then jump on the funicular railway. The integrated transport in the city worked brilliantly today.
I got confused. I didn't think it could be Steven when you said 'gentleman'.

To get out of your labyrinth try pulling a thread from your pants and tying it to a nearby hook. It worked for Theseus against the Minotaur. Mind you he did it before going into the Labyrinth. He also only had to fight a bull rather than reading the bull of someone else ramblings.
I may have to try the knicker elastic, it seems like it could possibly work. Thank you, I hope you are enjoying your magnificent travelling and journeying🌏
The knicker elastic thing might act like a bungee. You may only get halfway through your quest and then ....... WHEECH! Right back at the beginning.
This is the birthday house we did for misfitskid 's 21st. michellegwasb painted the main part of the house and me, Michelle, @Gibbioo and Finn decorated 6 drawers each to represent the things that misfitskid likes. Great fun to do!

It’s finally happened…and with a vengeance!!
Loretta laid up for a whole day, Old Delhi trip cancelled and poor Steven left to drink wine and whisky by himself in the hotel lounge. It’s been tough. Luckily she’s OK now, just in time for us to leave for Dubai...

Loretta decided to get “inked” for the New Year. The traditional Indian art of drawing patterns on the skin is called Mehndi. It’s normally used for weddings and celebrations. Indian brides will have elaborate patterns drawn over hands and arms and on feet and calves.
Shruti, from our hotel, helped me to get this done. She took me through the Pune traffic on her scooter to ‘Central Mehndi’. There was a book of patterns to choose from, then two guys took a hand each. The henna paste is applied using a paper cone, like an icing bag. The top photos show the paste as it was drying. The bottom show the finished result. The colour came out uneven, but the designs are delicate and detailed.
It is very temporary: it’ll all be gone in a few weeks. It’s just the look for Hogmanay celebrations, Indian style tomorrow night.
Weaving through the traffic in Pune was more fun than it sounds, especially as I had to get back on the scooter without holding on. Thank you Shruti.
This is a truly beautiful art form, my friend Zarina did some for me before and it took ages to fade because my skin is so pale! Lol :) xx
