30th October 2015. Dolmabahce Palace Istanbul, Turkey

The last of the Ottoman Sultans lived here as did Ataturk, the first president of the Turkish Republic. It is beautifully maintained, full of Victorian furniture. Chandeliers hang in all of its large halls. It’s full of gifts from European Royal families that don’t exist any more. The palace itself looks like a grand cake. It’s setting beside the Bosphorous is gorgeous.

To get in your join a tour that whips round the palace. It’s a popular place and only limited people can visit at anyone time. This means there is never time to tarry and take it all in. The guide sharply asked the gentleman to stop taking photos. Guess who that was! It meant that we can include one of the two interior shots Steven snapped off before being banned.

Getting to the palace was a breeze: two stops on the underground then jump on the funicular railway. The integrated transport in the city worked brilliantly today.

Just arrived in Istanbul after a relaxing flight. Jock got tucked straight into the pistachio sweets in our room, I guess he’s right into holiday mode already. The view is from our room on 24th floor; hopefully it will look better in the light of day. The guidebook is bulging with things to see and do. It’s our first time in Istanbul so where to start…And there is all that rest needed after a few busy months at work.

There was this thing during Jurassic Park that kinda bugged me. Whenever there was an herbivore on the screen, everyone was happy and passively interacting with these massive gentle giants. But do you know which vertebrate kills the most humans (aside from humans and snakes)? Freaking Hippos. Hippos with their big flat teeth and sunscreen sweat kill 3000 people a year. Elephants kill more than lions, bears, tigers, and sharks combined, and hippos kill like six times more people than elephants.

An animal’s diet is not a good representation of its dangerousness. Respect the mighty Apatosaurus.

Just asked Henry what kind of dinosaur he’d like to bring back and he said, “Dad, dinos would NOT BE NICE to humans.” And I said, what about herbivore dinosuars, and he said, “DAD! SERIOUSLY! NO. NONE DINOSAURS.”

Back from our Florence trip to a family get together to celebrate Zia Carla kicking cancer’s butt 16 years ago. Go Zia! As can be seen as well as excellent food (fish, fish and more fish) the flashing outsized sunglasses were the hit of the day. Little cousin Moses would give the Roney boys a run from their money in the dressing up stakes.

Everything from versions of Grease and Alice in Wonderland to dancing nuns and dragons breathing smoke. Each small village in the area makes it’s own float; at stake, everyone’s pride.

It’s taken very seriously with the whole community taking part but the most important is that everyone has a good time.
