Words to describe someone’s voice

adenoidal (adj) :  some of the sound seems to come through their nose.

appealing (adj): voice shows that you want help, approval, or agreement.

breathy (adj): with loud breathing noises.

booming (adj): very loud and attention-getting.

brittle (adj): if you speak in a brittle voice, you sound as if you are about to cry.

croaky (adj): they speak in a low, rough voice that sounds as if they have a sore throat.

Punctuating Dialogue

➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

Eyeglasses

for people who don’t wear glasses, but are writing a character with them

✺

⇾ they fog up when drinking hot beverages or sometimes eating hot food

⇾ they fog up when opening a dishwasher or oven (anything with steam)

⇾ they fog up when wearing a mask; unless you get the placement JUST right

⇾ they fog up when going inside somewhere warm from somewhere cold

⇾ if you take a hot shower and leave them on the counter, they will fog up and be unusable for a few minutes

⇾ they smudge for no reason and are always dirty; even if you just cleaned them

⇾ not realizing they’re dirty, and when you do finally realize, they’re atrociously dirty

⇾ usually you’ll have a certain way to push your glasses up (pinching the side to move them, using a certain finger to push them up from the center or along the edge somewhere; it can be anything, but it’s usually consistent)

⇾ but if your hands are full, you push your glasses up with everything and anything (shoulder, whatever your holding, nose scrunches, even tilting your head back in hope they’ll slide up, etc.)

⇾ it feels wrong to have your glasses even just slightly where they aren’t usually worn

⇾ red marks on either side of your nose where they usually sit

⇾ you can shake your head and do tricks and I swear they won’t move, but accidentally hit them just a little and they go flying off your face (this rarely happens though, especially if you’ve been wearing them for a long time)

⇾ when changing shirts (especially tight ones), you have to take them off or be extra careful because they will get crooked or maybe fall off

⇾ if you have long hair, they’ll get tangled in it (or even short hair sometimes)

⇾ rain is awful; you’ll get raindrops on them and you’ll have to clean them afterwards (with water if the rain dried)

⇾ you can get headaches if you don’t wear them for too long or even if you do wear them for too long

⇾ you’ll forget you’re wearing them; maybe lay down in bed wrong or get in the shower with them on or something

⇾ they’ll slide down your nose when you look down

⇾ pulling your hair out from between your ears and glasses when you put them on (sometimes)

⇾ forgetting they’re on top of your head and spending minutes looking for them

⇾ seeing light reflections in your glasses

⇾ if you’re very blind, you may panic if you can’t find them; and you’ll be squinting when you’re looking for them

⇾ headphones will be uncomfortable after a while because the metal presses into your head

⇾ if glasses break, it’s usually the frame, very rarely the lenses; usually it can be an easy fix by just tightening/replacing the screws

⇾ if you don’t need glasses anymore (getting contacts, for example), you’ll still naturally reach to push up your glasses or take them off before laying in bed or stuff like that
