Testimony from a Distillery Cleaning Worker

Yeah, I’ve heard that story. I can’t say anything definitive, but I don’t think it’s completely made up either. I’m contracted to clean that distillery, you see. I’ve been inside the aging warehouse plenty of times.

The first thing I noticed was the sound. Deep in the warehouse, there’s this low tone playing all the time. It’s not loud—most people probably wouldn’t even notice it. But if you put your hand on the floor or one of the barrels, you can feel a faint vibration.

At first I thought it was machinery. But it wasn’t. There was a rhythm to it. It repeated, and there was this distorted, guitar-like texture mixed in. I remember thinking while I worked, “Wait… this is music, isn’t it?”

One time, while I was cleaning, I asked a younger staff member, “What’s that they’re playing?” He said, “Some Japanese band, apparently.” I didn’t catch the name then, but later someone else mentioned “Kanashibari.”

It didn’t seem like the exact same track on repeat, but the sound had a consistent character—heavy, low-end, almost like it seeped into the barrels themselves.

That area is tightly controlled for humidity and temperature. Normally you wouldn’t introduce any unnecessary noise. But that section was different. The sound felt like part of the environment, almost intentional.

Does it affect the taste? I couldn’t tell you. I’m not an expert on liquor. But even when they rearranged barrels or did inspections, the sound never stopped. Not once did they shut it off to make things quiet.

Later I heard people talking about it—ideas like vibrations traveling through the wood, or “energy in the sound” influencing the aging process. Whether it was an experiment or just someone’s preference, I have no idea.

The brand name? Never heard it. People like me aren’t told that kind of thing. We go in, clean, and leave.

But there’s one thing I clearly remember. When you walk deeper into the aging warehouse, the air feels heavier. Maybe it’s the smell, maybe the humidity. But the closer you get to where that low sound is playing, the more you feel this dull pressure in your chest.

Whether the liquor changes, or the sound changes the space—or it’s all just in my head—I can’t say.

But “barrels aging while music is playing”? That part is real. At least every time I went in to clean, that sound was always there.

最初に気づいたのは音だよ。倉庫の奥の方で、ずっと低い音が鳴ってるんだ。うるさいってほどじゃない。むしろ、気づかない人は気づかないくらいの音量。でも、床とか樽に手を当てると、かすかに震えてるのが分かる。

最初は機械の稼働音かと思った。でも違うんだ。リズムがある。繰り返してるし、ギターっぽい歪みも混じってる。作業中に何度か耳に入ってきて、「これ音楽だよな？」って。

清掃の途中で、若いスタッフに聞いたことがある。「これ、何流してるの？」って。そしたら、「日本のバンドらしいですよ」って。名前まではそのとき覚えなかったけど、あとで別の人が「カナシバリってやつ」って言ってた。

ずっと同じ曲が流れてるわけじゃないみたいだけど、系統は全部似てる。重くて、低音が効いてて、なんていうか…樽の中に染み込む感じの音だなって思ったよ。

あとで聞いた話だと、「振動が木に伝わる」とか、「音のエネルギーが熟成を変える」とか、そういう考えがあるらしい。でも、それを誰が決めたのか、実験なのか、ただのこだわりなのかは知らない。

ブランド名？それも聞いたことない。外部の人間には教えないみたいでさ。俺らは清掃だけやって帰る立場だし。

Ah, that story? Yeah, when I first heard it I was like, “Seriously?” But I was actually there, so I don’t think it’s completely made up.

That day, a different drum head got brought in—something we don’t usually use. You could tell at a glance. The texture was totally different. Not like a normal coated head or a clear one… it felt kind of organic, almost.

The drummer was like, “This is interesting,” and just started playing it. And yeah, the sound was definitely unique. The attack was strangely dry, but the sustain lingered in this odd way. While we were recording, I remember thinking, “Oh, they’re really going to use this.”

Then there was the material. Someone casually said, “I heard it’s Komodo dragon skin.” It sounded like a joke, so I brushed it off. But no one from the production side denied it either, and that made me pause.

That said, it was never officially explained. I never saw any order forms, and I have no idea how it would’ve been processed. From a studio standpoint, all we get told is basically, “Custom head arrived.” That’s it.

Later on, some weird rumors started going around. Like, someone ran an audio analysis and found components that weren’t typical drum hits, or that there was something in there that sounded like a goat being eaten alive. I mean, at that point it just sounds like an urban legend, right?

Still, when you listen to the track by itself, there is some strange noise in there. It doesn’t clearly come from the gear, and it’s odd for performance noise too. It’s like… “there’s something in this.”

Which song was it? That’s the thing—we don’t know. In the studio, we record multiple tracks back to back, swap takes, redo parts. From an assistant’s position, it’s impossible to track which take ends up in the final version.

I doubt anyone has identified the exact title. At least, I haven’t heard it.

Animal-based drum heads aren’t unheard of, historically. So I can’t say it’s impossible. But the idea that a living creature’s “memory” remains in the sound… yeah, that feels like a stretch.

As for Kanashibari? I’ve never heard them say anything about it. I’ve never seen documentation, and I’m pretty sure no photos from the session have surfaced either.

In the end, what that head actually was, which song the sound ended up in, whether any analysis really happened—none of it’s clear. It’s all kind of hazy.

But at the very least, one thing is true. There was definitely a day we recorded with a drum head that wasn’t normal.

That much I can say for sure.

あー、その話っすか。いや、俺も最初聞いたとき「マジで？」ってなりましたけど。現場いたんで、ゼロじゃないと思いますよ。

その日、いつもと違うヘッドが持ち込まれてて。パッと見でも「あれ？」って感じで、質感が全然違うんすよ。普通のコーティッドともクリアとも違うし、なんか…ちょっと生っぽいっていうか。

ドラムの人も「これ面白いね」みたいなノリで叩いてて、音は確かに独特でした。アタックが妙に乾いてるのに、余韻が変な感じで残るんすよ。録りながら「あーこれ使うんだな」って思いました。

で、素材の話。その場で「コモドドラゴンの皮らしいよ」って誰かが言ったんすよ。軽口っぽく。俺も「またまた」って流してたんですけど、制作側の人が特に否定しなかったんで、あれ？って。

ただ、正式に説明されたことは一回もないです。発注書とか見たわけでもないし、加工どうしてるかとかも不明。現場的には「特注ヘッド来ました」以上の情報は降りてこないんで。

あと、後から変な話も回ってきて。音声解析したら、普通の打音じゃない成分が混ざってるとか、ヤギの断末魔みたいなのが入ってるとか。いや、そこまでいくと都市伝説っすよね。

でも、確かにトラック単体で聴くと、ちょっと妙なノイズがあるんすよ。機材由来とも言い切れないし、演奏ノイズにしては変だし。「なんかいるなこれ」みたいな。

どの曲かって？それが分かんないんすよ。現場では何曲も連続で録るし、差し替えもあるし。最終的にどのテイクが採用されたか、アシスタントの立場じゃ全部は追えないんで。

タイトル特定してる人、たぶん誰もいないと思いますよ。少なくとも俺は知らないっす。

動物素材のヘッド自体は、昔からゼロじゃないじゃないですか。だから「あり得ない」とも言い切れないんですよね。ただ、生き物の“記憶”が音に残るとかは、さすがに話盛ってる感ありますけど。

カナシバリ側？この件について何か言ってるのは聞いたことないっす。資料も見たことないし、現場写真も外に出てないはず。

結局、あの日のヘッドが本当に何だったのか、あの音がどの曲に入ってるのか、解析って本当に行われたのか。全部ぼやっとしたままなんですよね。

でも、少なくとも。「普通じゃないヘッドで録った日があった」のは、マジです。

I’m not sure how much I’m allowed to talk about this… but at the very least, it’s true that the name is being mentioned internally.

I work as a secretary on the executive floor at headquarters. My usual duties are preparing meeting materials and coordinating schedules with external parties. But a few weeks ago, fragments of conversation about a certain audio source started coming up.

At first, it was the legal team talking. They used very matter-of-fact language—things like “it resembles operational noise from the factory” and “there’s a possibility the waveforms match.”

No specific song title was mentioned at the time. But later, while organizing documents, I saw the name of a Japanese rock band listed. I think it was Kanashibari.

I’m not particularly knowledgeable about music, but there were comparison materials attached. They placed recordings from inside the factory next to noise components from part of a track, with notes explaining that the waveforms appeared similar.

Sounds like metal scraping, low vibrations repeating at regular intervals, bursts of high-frequency noise appearing intermittently… those elements were described as possibly being “acoustic patterns unique to specific equipment.”

But no one was definitively saying it was actually recorded at our facility, or how it could have been captured. Everything was framed as a “possibility.”

The talk of a lawsuit wasn’t formal, either. At least in the schedules and documents I handled, there were no concrete details—no filing dates, no court names, nothing like that.

What felt strange, though, was that the communications department remained completely silent. Normally, when rumors like this surface, at least an internal draft statement circulates. But there was nothing.

It seemed like the discussion was happening only between legal and senior management. I do know there were several meetings at a level that wasn’t even shared with the secretarial staff.

I also heard about the forum post. Apparently the original message was deleted quickly, but screenshots circulated, and some people inside the company saw them.

Still, it wasn’t clear whether any of that could be treated as evidence. There were parallel discussions about whether similarity in sound alone could justify any kind of claim.

Personally, it doesn’t feel very real to me. The idea that industrial sounds end up in music isn’t exactly unusual.

But I could sense a slight shift in the atmosphere among upper management. That quiet tension you get just before something serious happens.

The kind of situation where no one mentions it openly, but the people involved all know it’s there.

In the end, I still don’t know whether a lawsuit is actually moving forward, still in preparation, or just a rumor. From my position, there’s no way to tell.

The only thing I can say for certain is this: the matter isn’t being ignored.

At least, not on that floor.

この話、どこまで話していいのか分からないんですけど……少なくとも、社内で「名前が出ている」こと自体は事実なんです。

私は本社の役員フロアで秘書をしていて、普段は会議資料の準備とか、外部とのスケジュール調整が仕事なんですけど。数週間前から、ある音源の話題が断片的に上がるようになったんですよ。

最初は法務チームの会話でした。 「工場の稼働音に似ている」「波形が一致している可能性」って、すごく事務的な言い方で。

具体的な曲名までは、その場では出なかったんですけど。後で資料を整理しているときに、日本のロックバンドの名前が記載されているのを見ました。カナシバリ、だったと思います。

私自身は音楽に詳しいわけじゃないんですけど、添付されていた比較資料があって。 工場内で記録された音と、楽曲の一部のノイズ成分が並べられていて、波形が似ている、って説明が書かれていました。

金属が擦れるような音とか、低い振動が一定周期で続く部分とか、高い周波数のノイズが断続的に入るところとか。そういうのが「設備固有の音響パターンではないか」って。

ただ、それが本当にうちの施設の音なのか、どうやって録られたのか、そこは誰も断定していなかったんです。 「可能性」という言葉ばかりで。

訴訟の話も、正式なものではないんですよ。 少なくとも、私が扱ったスケジュールや文書の中には、提出日とか裁判所名とか、そういう具体的な項目は一切ありませんでした。

Honestly, I still haven’t fully processed what happened that night. It was the weekend, and the set had been moving along like usual—industrial, noise, that kind of thing. The floor had that same “familiar atmosphere” it always does. Must’ve been a little past 2 a.m.

When the DJ transitioned into the next track, there was no applause, no cheers—just a silent fade. Then, all of a sudden, fragments of guitar burst in, like metal being torn apart. It wasn’t ordinary distortion. It felt more like finely cut shards scattering through the space. On top of that, processed vocal reverberations overlapped, and a track I’d never heard before started to unfold.

At first, people around me just looked at each other like, “Huh?”

But the moment the beat came in, the air changed.

A heavy, dull kick dropped straight into the pit of my stomach. Distorted low frequencies kept repeating, with bursts of noise slipping in between. It felt like something forcibly reassembled for a club setting—like the original shape was still faintly there, but it had been hammered into something entirely different.

DJが次の曲に繋いだとき、拍手も歓声もなくて、ただ無言でフェードしたんだよ。で、次の瞬間、金属が引き裂かれるみたいなギターの断片がいきなり飛び込んできた。あれ、普通の歪みじゃないんだ。細かく切断された破片が空間にばら撒かれる感じっていうかさ。そこに加工されたボーカルの残響が重なって、聴いたことないトラックが鳴り始めたんだよ。

最初は、周りも「ん？」って顔見合わせる程度だった。 でも、ビートが立ち上がった瞬間、空気が変わったんだ。

後日、断片っぽい録音がネットに上がり始めてるのも見た。 でもどれも解像度が低くて、全体像が全然分からないんだ。あの場で感じた圧とか重さが、まったく再現されてない。

クラブ側も何も言ってないし、DJがどこから持ってきた音なのかも不明。 単なる現場限定のリミックスなのか、別のプロジェクトの一部なのか、全然分からないんだよ。

たださ。 あの時間帯にフロアにいたやつら、たぶん全員、同じ違和感を持ち帰ってると思う。
