[text] That would be wonderful, darling. Beatrice has grown rather fond of you.

[text] I’ve grown fond of her. She’s adorable.

Rose was rather certain that Gillian and anyone around them heard her eye roll. The girl was being rather ridiculous. Clearly she had no idea how to have a polite conversation with someone. “Whatever you say, darling.”

“And now we go back to being closed off,” Gillian said softly. “I think we’ve had a nice lunch. Things are going to get better. I know they will.” Gillian was the eternal optimist about her family, or at least she tried to be.

“Honestly this is only part one of your present but I am glad you love it.” He holds the door open for her and runs a hand through his hair as she makes her way into the shelter. “There’s a lot of dogs here looking for a family and a home”

“Jake...” she said, her voice sounding warm and infused with her fondness for him. She steps through the door he’s held open for her. “Thank you. Really. This is perfect.”

“Father tries.” That was all that Rose wished to say about the matter. She did love the man; however, there were times that the woman urged him to consider looking into medication. “Drink your nonalcoholic beverage, Pan. I’m not intoxicated enough to talk about this.”

“You’ve been doing fairly okay if you ask me.” Rose was always fairly reluctant to talk to her or anyone about their family. “We’ve made some progress at least.” Gillian would take forward movement wherever she could get it. Progress was progress. With Rose any progress could usually be considered good when it came to getting her to talk.

Rose rolled her eyes, finishing her glass of wine. “Father always did have the worst sense of humor.” Rose would rather die than wear something like that. Still she knew what Gillian and her father wanted. It was nothing more than a foolish hope. “Mother could try apologizing to me, but she won’t.”

“I think that dad keeps everything interesting,” Gillian replied. Gabriel Beckett was an eccentric at best. “I still think you and mom can mend things. It’s not too late for us all.”

“Pan, I understand that you want us to be one happy family; however, I doubt that it will happen.” She sighed, taking a sip of her drink. Her mother would always be a little bit cold to her eldest daughter causing Rose to act in kind. 

“You can’t say that it won’t be for my lack of trying,” she replied, sounding more defeated than she had meant to. She wanted to have more a united front in her family if it was at all possible. “I mean you better be glad that it’s me having this conversation instead of dad, who would definitely more than likely suggest family tracksuits or something similar.”

“Whatever you have to tell yourself. I was just making a suggestion on how you could release some of that tension.”

“Jake’s pretty good at relieving that tension in places that don’t involve Marilyn.”

“I haven’t the slightest idea what you are talking about.” Gillian obviously was misjudging the situation yet again. It was sweet that she thought the best of people- utterly stupid but cute. “Mother and I are nothing alike.”

“Don’t act like I don’t know what I am talking about,” she said, tilting her head. “The perk of being quiet and boring is that you get to observe a lot and learn a lot from it. I think I might know from watching you two in action all these years.”

He grins over to her. “I was hoping you’d like it. I know you’ve been thinking about it and to be honest so have I. So I figured why not get one together. Plus…Claire nudged me”

“I don’t just like it. I honestly love it. I just...I can’t believe it.” She was afraid her voice would dissolve into high pitched squeals. “I need to send her a thank you because this is perfect and you are perfect.”
