My last public thought on 9/11 - the rest I have finally, after 20 years, started to write down in a personal journal. I can barely remember what I ate for lunch yesterday, but the details of that day, which started out as an ordinary day at work in Manhattan, are as vivid and tangible as if I was experiencing them real time. I still haven’t visited the memorial, though I have been in the current iteration of the WTC subway station. I remember the months after the tragedy when hordes of folks would visit the site to pay respects and witness what still seems unimaginable. My dad and I dropped my mom off blocks from it so she could walk over, but we stayed in the car. I think for the first time I finally understood why my dad, a WWII combat vet, wouldn’t let me send him to France on the 50th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. I’m far from a combat vet, but I finally had more empathy for the experience of wanting to honor the lives lost in a different way than re-visiting the site where they perished from the hands and actions of men. @jamestaylor_com haunting performance of his classic “Fire and Rain” (one of my favorite songs) at the 9/11 tribute concert in 2001 is etched in my memory. The words he wrote in 1969 (and released in 1970) still resonate: “Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground …” #rip https://www.instagram.com/p/CTr_NrOlvpA/?utm_medium=tumblr
