The hostesses of the Smile Cabaret sent off the last group of customers at the end of their opening hours, except for one that was still on the far end couch.
Gintoki was reclining inelegantly, his arms and head slung across the back of the sofa, clearly done for the night. Sprawling on the cushion beside him in a very unladylike manner was Shimura Tae, one of the club’s most popular girls, and who, at the moment, was a far cry from what that title encompassed.
The manager shook his head at the sight before walking over, and kicked the dry pocketed samurai in the shin.
“Hey! Get up. The club is closed.”
Wine coloured eyes opened lazily at the contact and looked around. Gintoki scratched his head and muttered something unintelligible under his breath before he began fumbling with his clothing, trying to find his wallet.
He finally retrieved the famished and sad-looking thing that he used to keep what little money he had. He slowly and almost painfully went through his wallet before grudgingly laying all that was left in it on the table.
With an empty pocket and sou, he was about to leave when the manager called out. Gintoki nervously turned to him, prepared to bolt in case the money he left wasn’t enough to cover the bill.
The sky was a beautiful shade of gold and light blue, promising a wonderful day ahead. This did nothing to lighten up the silver haired man’s mood; the sunrise was only an annoyance at the moment, as he had to squint his eyes to shield against the early morning light.
A grumble came from behind him as if to protest, and a fidgety movement that caused his arms to slack.
“Stay still, will you?” Gintoki demanded before readjusting his hold to better support the person on his back.
He could feel the warmth where her body pressed against his. Her breath tickled his skin as she rested her face in the crook of his neck, and he had to distract himself from the thought of her.
“Why are you so heavy?” Alcohol and irritation had loosened his tongue, and Otae’s unconsciousness left him brave enough that whatever control he had over his words evaporated entirely.
Her slim arms tightened around him and he suspected that she was subconsciously attempting to choke him.
A walk to the Shimura estate had never been so long before.
His head was slightly swirling and he had been staggering left and right for the past fifteen minutes as they approached her house.
The man didn’t even bother taking off his boots when he wandered inside.
He had been at her place countless times before, but never her bedroom. In his normal state, Gintoki might have felt a bit awkward for encroaching on a single woman’s private space, but since both of them were drunken messes, it didn’t occur to him.
“You’re home. You can get down now.”
He stood with his back to her futon and was about to release his hold on her when Otae’s arms wrapped tighter around him.
“Hey, don’t get too comfortable up here now, woman. Get down and go to bed already.”
The only response he got was a rub of hair against his jaw line as she shook her head, but he was having none of that.
All he wanted to do was to go home, drink some strawberry milk and bury his face in the pillow for the rest of the day to wait out the inevitable hangover.
“You want to do it the hard way? Fine.”
He laid them both sideways on the futon before wrestling away from her hold. This time she cooperated easily enough.
Gintoki had just righted himself and was preparing to leave to tend to his own alcohol aftermath when he heard her giggles, and god was it a mistake to turn and look at her.
Otae gazed up at him with half-lidded eyes, cheeks puffed red from the alcohol and laughter. Brown hair speared on the mattress and her kimono slightly tousled from their little match.
The memory of her warmth teased his male senses and he needed to get out of there. The man quickly turned to exit her room and headed towards the gates.
He wasn’t half way through the front yard when he was startled by a familiar voice half-shouting out slurs.
“I will not let you have the sacred jewel, prepare to die you ugly baboon!” [1]
His eyes almost popped of their sockets when he spotted the girl he had just left on the roof, wobbling precariously and swinging a broom at the invisible monkey monster.
"What the hell are you doing?!”
Well, maybe it was slightly irresponsible of him to have left her in her state. But he thought that the woman would just go to sleep, not play with an imaginary sword on the damn roof.
Guess he would have to ask Shinpachi to look after her now. Gintoki dragged a happily humming Otae along with him to her brother’s room.
“Oi, Patsuan! Wake up and keep this crazy woman you call sister from running around doing more weird stuff.”
He banged harder on the wall besides Shinpachi’s door, but there was no response. After the third round of abusive knocking, he barged in.
But there was no Shinpachi in the room. Then somewhere at the back of his mind, the Yorozuya boss recalled the boy saying that he was going to a neighbouring town for a concert, or to catch a whale or something. The point was that he was not there.
Now he would have to babysit a crazy woman, who was attractive but could easily beat his ass, who was his teammate’s sister and who was also currently drunk out of her mind.
Gintoki groaned and face palmed himself.
Gripping her wrist, Gintoki pulled Otae back through the hallway and towards the living room. No way was he going back to the bedroom with her.
Even though she didn’t attempt to pull another crazy stunt, Otae showed no sign that she would just sleep the intoxication off and let him be either.
Gintoki slid open the doors to the garden, hoping that some fresh air would help clear their heads. They sat at the opposite sides of the sliding doors with an appropriate space between them.
There was a moment of silence in which she just stared at him with her searching brown eyes while he tried not to look back at her, and instead titled his gaze up at the sky.
“Ne, Gin-san,” her soft voice called out, to which he replied with a throaty hum.
He was quite surprised at her sudden question and turned to see that she was waiting attentively for his answer.
“Well. You are dangerously talented when it comes to cooking, literally. Who else in the world could turn everything into burning crisps? You can also be scary outside of the kitchen as well. With that gorilla strength of yours, you could easily beat a grown man’s ass.”
Gintoki expected her to beat the shit out of him at his attempted aggravation. But she just simply looked at him. And even if he was not in his clearest state of mind, he couldn’t have mistaken the hurt on her face.
“Is that all you think of me?”
Otae rose onto her knees before wobbly moving towards him, her kimono scraping against the mat floor making it hard for her to keep steady.
Her voice echoed with dejection and Gintoki immediately regretted having said those things when she wasn’t her normal self.
Otae’s sentence was cut off when she lost her balance and went crashing right into Gintoki.
He almost fell backwards at the impact but was able to keep both of them from hitting the floor. Strong arms instinctually went around her waist to support her.
The body that he used to say resembled a chopping board was small and soft against his. It was warm and welcoming and he felt a bit lost when she pulled back slightly.
Otae readjusted her position and unknowingly seated herself on his lap. She was so close that he could feel her slightly ragged breath mingling with his own. Small hands slid down from his shoulders to grip the front of his shirt, where his heart was.
“Why does my heart beat so fast, like it’s going to bust whenever I’m near you?"
Otae seemed genuinely confused. Her gleaming eyes searched his, seeking answers and he couldn’t look away.
She then guided one of his hands to her chest, clearly unaware of the effect it had on him. He could feel the wild thump, thump beneath his palm, echoing along with his own and soon he couldn’t really tell them apart anymore.
He followed her voice, and his gaze fell to her parted lips, looking so soft and inviting, then slowly trailed down to her long smooth neck.
“Have you ever felt it too, Gin-san?"
She whispered, sounded almost desperate and it sent shivers down his spine. The feel of her body on his made his blood boil with red-hot passion. Every little movement she made stirred up the suppressed desire within him.
And he couldn’t take it any longer. His rational mind seemed to have been washed down along with the alcohol and he acted on pure instinct.
Gintoki pushed her onto the tatami, wine coloured orbs fixed on her with such admiration and want. His strong body hovered above hers just barely, only a heartbeat apart. His arms supported his weight while his hands went to captured her small wrists. A tingle of anticipation passed through him every time he felt their clothing shifted against each other.
Otae didn’t protest nor did she tried to break free from him. All the young woman did was look up at him. Her eyes weren’t rejecting him, they were asking, waiting.
Did she not know of a man’s desire and what she was doing to him right now?
She trusted him way too much.
He inched his face closer to hers, and he could hear his heart pounding in his ears when she slowly fluttered her eyes shut. They were so close; he could practically taste the sweetness of her lips already.
But she was innocent, untainted. Even though every single part of him wanted her so badly, he knew that this was not right. Not when she was unable think clearly and had not given him her full consent.
The man pressed his forehead to the floor beside her head and tried to calm his breathing. It was so hard to stop himself when she was this close, lovely and warm and inviting, but he was glad he did.
She was too important to him.
Gintoki muttered quietly into her ears, ashamed at himself for letting his feelings getting the better of him and almost taking advantage of her fragile state.
He lifted his head up to look at her, to let her know that he cared for her in his own ways.
But her eyes were remained closed, her breathing soft and even. Otae was laying still and seemed completely unaware her surroundings.
She felt asleep!? Really?
Gintoki almost felt like laughing. After what she had put him through, she just ditched him for dreamland.
Though he was secretly glad at the thought that she probably wouldn’t remember his little slip when she woke.
He got off her before carefully gathering her in his arms and walking towards her bedroom. Gintoki lowered her sleeping form on to the futon and covered her up with a blanket.
She looked so peaceful then and he couldn’t help the small smile tucking at his lips.
I’m going to have one of the worst hangovers ever and it’s your fault, woman.
