I like cancelled plans. And empty bookstores. I like rainy days and thunderstorms. And quiet coffee shops. I like messy beds and over-worn pajamas. Most of all, I like the small joys that a simple life brings.

Linde Oktoberfest 2019
WOW! Linde’s Oktoberfest celebrated it’s 41st year & just WOW. I’ve had the privilege of covering this event with Social Media Tulsa. What does that mean exactly? The SMTulsa team is behind the scenes capturing All. The. Things. to share across Facebook, Instagram, InstaStories, Snapchat & of course for future marketing.
It kicks off on Wednesday with Corporate Night & runs for 5 fantastic days of beer, brats & the chicken dance. And of course, the Euro Disco! Tulsa’s Oktoberfest is rated one of the best in the NATION. How amazing is that? Check out this super video by my friends at GlennHawk Media did capturing a bit of the fun.
Native American Day in Tulsa
Monday October 14 was the third year Tulsa has celebrated Native American Day.
At least five states plus Washington, D.C., have ditched Columbus Day celebrations in favor of an Indigenous Peoples Day. Last year I stumbled upon this event at Guthrie Green & was smitten.
The princesses spoke about their dedication & service in the communities & how much their role means to them. I cried. Growing up in America, it’s impossible not to be inundated with ideas of who you should be. These young women are role models and curators of their culture. The entire day is a beautiful experience. There were so many beautiful handcrafted wearables & art & the traditional regalia is just stunning. Words fail, but GlennHawk Media was able to capture it perfectly. Check it out below & don’t miss the Tribal Celebration November 9 at The Gathering Place.

My fiancé created this amazing bottle tree in our front yard & it's never more beautiful than at sunset. 2nd Annual Native American Day
This past Monday, Columbus Day was celebrated in many cities across the US but Tulsa celebrates Native American Day instead ♥️ Owasso, Oklahoma, located just north of Tulsa, is the end of the legendary Trail of Tears.
The parade took to downtown before culminating at a day of festivities in Guthrie Green Park.
I was honored to happen upon the opening ceremony & watching the Kiowa Warrior Woman present the flags brought tears to my eyes ♥️
There were cultural art & wearables on display as well as Native American owned businesses & community service organizations present. Community leaders spoke & one of the most moving moments for me was the introduction of the princesses.
Each young women gave her introduction in a native tongue before translating it into English for the crowds. Each princess spoke to her role in the community, her goals & her vision of the future.
What was the most moving for me was the fact these women were honored by their communities, peers & elders as leaders, role models, inspirations. In stark contrast to the cliche that Millennials don’t care about anything, these women embody the heart & passion that keeps indigenous cultures alive today. See more posts & live video at Girl About Tulsa.
Pop by next week for more 918 love!
Where Have I Been?
The idea for this blog began brewing this summer when I had considerably much more free time on my hands! SO my weekly posts have been in a holding pattern! Life has been moving at ....what’s faster than warp speed? ....but we’re back on schedule! Join me on Instagram for all my 918 shenanigans happening!
918 Day on 9/18/18 ❤
I’ve already introduced you to the guy who inspired me to look for reasons to love my hometown & last week we celebrated with him & Tulsa at Urban Arts Lab.
With your choice of red or white & plenty of fantastic conversation, the Urban Art Lab was abuzz with some of the most fun people in the 918. If you haven’t been by UAL, stop in! You’re greeted with Steve’s Tulsa loving gear & then you go down a rabbit hole of textiles, paintings, mixed media & more. This collective is the perfect place to celebrate 9.18.2018:
So much talent & love in this space, you can’t help but fall in love with this hidden gem in the Kendall-Whittier. Much like Steve himself the art here is colorful, eclectic, and full of energy. As people drift in & out, Steve snaps selfies with well-wishers. His signature post photoshoot move, making the experience a memory with a friend, not just a catalog image.
His project to shoot 918 people in the 918 has brought together hundreds of people from every walk of life. The 918 party was no different, though the lights seemed to have a mind of their own.
I loved how every person who came through shared their 918 story: how they found Steve, how much they love Tulsa, that one time at Oktoberfest when.....wait that’s for another blog. ;)
As I stood outside UAL counting down the minutes to my blog launch, I captured a behind the scenes shot that was my favorite of the night. Thank you, Steve, for sharing your love & making it so easy to fall in love with our little city! Be sure to follow Steve on Facebook & you can stop by his shop at Urban art Lab or order online from his Etsy shop.
Check out his recent interview with Tulsa Profiles too!
Thanks for stopping by! ❤ Know someone that shines in Tulsa? Tell me in the comment section!
Blog officially launches September, 2018! Join me on Instagram: @GirlAboutTulsa & follow my adventures about town!
I moved to Oklahoma a decade ago. A small town girl from Arkansas.
A friend lived in Owasso & I would refer to it as, “Oh-wherever.”
I didn’t know much anything about where I was moving, I knew it was an adventure. I love adventures. And adventures require the right shoes. So, I ordered a pair of vintage cowboy boots on eBay & prepared for the next chapter in my life. I moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma on July 5, 2008.
I also wore those boots every. where. that summer. With everything. Even pajamas. Literally annoyingly all the time. Why? Because it’s Oklahoma. If there were ever a place to wear “shit kickers” every day, it was here.
My first night I saw Kill Hannah at The Marquee (now the Vanguard) & saw a bit of the burgeoning downtown. I called the BOK Center the “Bock” Center--No one corrected me for a month. Thanks, guys. I got my first real taste of Tulsa when I went to D’Fest a few weeks later. Summer in Tulsa is a certain shade of hell but it’s also full of great festivals, events, and concerts. The Blue Dome District was a vibrating mass of humidity soaked tie-dyed artists and party rockers.
I spotted a “Don’t Hate the 918” button on the ground. How rad. It was fun to say “Don’t Hate The Nine One Eight” & a button (#suckerforthem). So I snagged it, put in my suspenders & enjoyed the shows. Fun fact: I’ve complimented three strangers a day, every day, since college. I’m actually kind of an introvert #surprise. This was a way for me to open up to people without being anxious. It became a habit, and when I moved to Tulsa, I kept throwing kindness like confetti!
I mean why not? Compliments are free. Landing in a city that had its own fan club was kismet. Little did I know, a decade & a life ago, the artist behind the movement would be such a huge influence on the way I saw my new hometown!
I’ve fallen in love with Tulsa, as it’s fallen in love with itself. Cain’s, the BOK, Meadow Gold District, Pearl District. North Tulsa & Downtown Tulsa. Kendall Whittier. Guthrie Green & the Woody Guthrie Center. Tulsa Arts District. Music. Art. Film. Performers. Clubs. Museums. There is always something to do & something to see here. I also love how much the community comes together to support itself, looking at you Outsiders House. I’ll be showcasing the artists, professionals, characters & businesses that are growing Tulsa! Super excited to share all that’s great about the 918! Posts will go up each Wednesday & you can follow the behind the scenes adventures about town on Instagram @GirlAboutTulsa & hashtag your Tulsa adventures for me to share: #GirlAboutTulsa Thank you so much, Steve, for a wonderful evening of art, great conversation, & new friends! The perfect way to celebrate all that’s great about the 918! Thank you for sharing the love! Happy 918 Day Mr. 918! Who would you like to see spotlighted? I wanna know who you love in Tulsa!
