wanted to post the process for this one because i actually worked it in sensible steps like a normal person for once instead of just stumbling into a final product.
rough sketch -> clean sketch -> rough values -> lineart -> additional details and final values -> tweaks and gradient map.

anyway i knew i had drawn this one at some point but i had to dig pretty hard in my procreate files to find it because it turns out it was uhhhh awhile ago </3. where have the years gone man what do you mean february 2022.
I'm gonna just transcribe all these notes here since theyre itty bitty and add some updated thoughts as well
Phoenix:
decides he is gonna be a witch so he can track down his bff edgeworth even though that's extremely illegal. is a pathetic wretch but earnest enough that mia takes him under her wing after he gets victimized by some of dahlia fuckery (magic edition). I think the fey atelier has been producing and safeguarding specific magics that the larger witch community is uninterested in and so their backwater operation avoids heavy scrutiny from the assembly.
Does a lot of fucking around and finding out. Technically most of what he's actually doing with magic isn't illegal but maybe it should be. Some of it definitely is

her dad fled and abandoned her after being suspected of performing forbidden magic, rather than risk getting his memory overwritten. due to her perceived backstory of coming from a witch enclave that doubles in forbidden magic, no one else would take her on as an apprentice. Especially prodigious with illusion magic
Edgeworth

i think greg is a witch who does a lot of city maintenance in the town Phoenix lives. Edgeworth of course is always tagging along and we get some little boy friendship. MVK mercs Greg with some forbidden magic and edgeworth witnesses it, MVK uses Even More forbidden magic to implant false memories in edgeworth of his murdering his own father. Phoenix undoes this magic eventually.
anyway i think 2022 me was cooking i roughly stand by all of this. the biggest issue here is that edgeworth so clearly needs to be a member of the knights moralis. like its so immediately obvious and self explanatory that the only reason i can conceive of why i drew anything different is because i tunnel visioned too hard on how funny it would be to give him a stupid hat with a cravat and vest on it. but in my defense. its pretty funny. ruining other people's lives because they've committed a crime he secretly thinks himself to be guilty of is the miles edgeworth special (one of many) so obviously he needs to be gung ho about mind wiping anyone whose even come within sniffing distance of the wrong kind of spells
i think as a spellcaster phoenix is probably kind of terrible at doing any serious magical craftsmanship but really excels at altering other people's spellcraft on the fly by instinct. by contrast i think edgeworth probably has a tonnn of foundational principles and is extremely proficient and consistent at just about any magic most witches would need day to day, but is comparatively rigid and inflexible, utilizing few of his own original spells.
i think trucy has probably been holding a pen since before she can sit up and is like, really really good, but most of her magical skills are ones that are seen as pretty trifling and frivolous since they don't have much 'practical' application and are mostly stylish and flashy. i dont think phoenix Teaches her magic as much as he supports her self-study and looks after her otherwise.
i imagine apollo would be way more on the other side of things, pretty practical and results-based. i think he'd be more the type to make contraptions and phoenix and trucy probably make him spruce up their dilapidated shitty atelier once hes resigned to come work with them after his spot with kristoph blows up. im not entirely sure what id see kristoph doing in this situation. he probably primarily interfaces with high end noble clientele to produce contraptions or otherwise provide services.
i think it'd be fun if the fey family were in the business of cultivating and tending to silverwood groves. maybe the way people fight over the inheritance is they keep fucking turning each other into trees that they then process into extremely high end ink with some other specialty ingredients that they're some of the only people who handle. that could be neat. maybe morgan gets tree'd and when mia is looking into it she digs a little bit too deep and ends up becoming a host as well, needing to deal with that shit when she's mentoring phoenix. and then it kills her too #yay. actually it would be awesome if phoenix's atelier is built around his mentor's treecorpse like the starry sword is built around a silverwood. i like that for them.
maybe ill draw some updated designs and designs for other characters than just these three at some point... it'd be fun...
Since getting into Star Trek my Pinterest has given me some funky clothes so why not draw the triumvirate in them?????
