UYUNI, RIDE WITH STYLE be Grace García

1. Tell us about your work it in a few lines

 It´s a collection for urban cyclists, who wear sport or casual garments. Casual clothing deals with aesthetic issues while sportswear goes more on the technical and functional side, so I work on solving these needs on one same proposal with a specific design for city riders.

2. How did your ideas come up?

There are clothing items in my wardrobe which I don´t wear when I know I am going to ride my bike. As I am a daily urban cyclist and also a clothing designer I noticed a clear necessity of being able to dress up regardless of the way of transportation you use. From that point on I began to discuss the issue with friends and looked up on urban cyclist forums... so, yes there is a real need on that.

3. Where are you based and why?

Currently I live in Valencia, I came here for a master on sustainable fashion.

4. You are a girl on wheels?

Of course! I will not separate from my bicycle, It is an necessary ecological means of transportation, healthy and economical. Besides, people smile when riding their bikes, and I do like that.

5. Any future projects?

SELLE ROYAL LAUNCHES UP SADDLE ART PROJECT

SR Commissions 25 internationally-renowned illustrators to design theme saddles Selle Royal has commissioned leading comic artists, product designers, graphic illustrators and animators from across Europe and America to create an exclusive set of 25 saddle-based artworks.

The artworks follow five themes to raise awareness of key societal issues and celebrate some international holidays: Valentines Day (14th February) Women’s Day (8th March), Earth Day (22nd April), International Bike Day (11th May) and Children’s Day (1st June).

The five themes were chosen in a vote by Selle Royal employees, selecting global issues that concerned and motivated them most.

The themes chosen reflect this dedication, with the first edition about overcoming adversity and coming together to strive for a fairer, less divided world.

Matteo Cuccato, artist and project leader explained the process: “Aside from selecting the illustrators and the saddle template, we gave the artists free reign to express themselves as they saw fit, with their preferred techniques and styles, using the saddle as a blank canvas.

To help promote discussion on these issues, Selle Royal will make just one of each saddle available to the public via a free-to-enter social media competition using the hashtag #sUPportproject with entrants encouraged to give examples of adversity in their life or how they overcame it.

The first series of five saddles to be announced is titled ‘Love Today’ and will launch on Valentines Day the 14th of February using the hashtag #Lovetoday. Each of these first five works have been created using Selle Royal’s LookIN Moderate Saddle. www.selleroyal.com

GOODS GIRLS ON WHEELS IN TEL AVIV by Grace García

1. Tell us about your work it in a few lines

Stolen Goods started with a series of designed roll-top backpacks, focused on comfort and individuality. each bag was hand printed with silkscreen printed patterns and illustrations that we made. The special patterns are the main theme for the brand that has clean and minimalist cuts but with a lot of details in the imagery that we like to draw. Each print is intentionally uneven, and every bag is a unique and original Piece. 2. How did your ideas come up?

We both share a studio together and share a similar artistic line and influence, we wanted to start something that takes our drawing out of the paper and frame and to move it to basic everyday accessories, and make them unique. Every bag is made individually with a lot of work and thought. The main idea is to make new patterns for every new series of bags.  

3. Where are you based and why?  

We are based in Tel -Aviv, because this is where we're from. But it can change anytime. 4. You are a girls on wheels? Yes, since 1990. That’s why it was important to us to make a  bag that will be comfortable for riding. It’s very light weight and sit tight in your back. It has a side zipper so you can easy reach for your stuff in your bag even while riding. 5. Any future projects? We are planning to make more bags designs, T-shirts and pajamas. And working on our next exhibition.

Coh&Co WOODEN BIKE by Grace García

1.Tell us about the project it in a few lines

We are a Danish bicycle start-up, Coh&Co, making wooden bicycles. The goal is to offer the warmest ride on the road for everyday cycling, and with our sensible and functional designs become a serious alternative to mainstream urban bicycle manufacturing. 

2.How did your idea come up?

We started this company out of a love for bicycles, which probably goes without saying, but it’s also born from a real passion for sustainable transportation. We enjoy what we are doing and believe in the products and the lifestyle they promote. The original idea came from my partner Paul Harder Cohen, who has spent most of his life building ocean racing boats. Together with a love for wood, transferring his knowledge of structural design of carbon fiber components into bicycle design seemed like a good idea, and so I joined him. Together we believe we can bring something unique to the table with this wood and carbon combination.

3.Why wood bike?

Wood is a very unique natural engineering material that produces very tough, lightweight structures built to last a lifetime. We wanted to build something real and honest of good quality materials. Build the right way, wood makes for a very pleasant and warm ride. Something that has to be experienced. 

4.Who do you take your inspiration from?

Paul would say Charlie Chaplin and Nikola Tesla. I say the Moomins, however weird that may sound. And also the tech startup community which i have been a part of the last couple of years working as product designer. To both of us the people close to us are probably the biggest inspiration. Our first two bike frame models are named after each of our grandfathers, I guess that says a lot.

5.Where are you based and why?

We are based in Copenhagen, Denmark. I have lived here on my boat for many years now with my husband and small son. Paul who is originally Austrian-American came to Denmark about 25 years ago. It is home to us and the perfect place for a bicycle start-up. Copenhagen is bicycle heaven, I dont know anyone who doesn’t own at least one bicycle and the infrastructure here is build around bicycle commuting.

6. Any future projects?

We are already working on our next exiting project, a carbon cargo bike. Although there are a lot of cargo bikes out there already we believe that we have something new to offer when it comes to design, materials and not the least the mechanical steering structure. It is to be made of recycled carbon and a structural configuration not yet to be found in the current assortment of offerings on the market. We are expecting the first prototype to be ready over the summer.

BOOKMAN, BEST BIKE ACCESORIES by Grace García

1.    How did your idea come up? Why bikes accessories? We started our company about 4 years ago and at that time it was really difficult to find bicycle lights that were not looking like lightspeed spaceships. So if we wanted stylish products that would complement our bikes, we had to make them ourselves. That’s how we started Bookman – to make bicycle accessories for urban bicyclists who care for both style and function. We had some previous experience with bike lights so it felt natural to develop that as the first product. We believe that biking is the absolutely best way of getting around. Therefore, we want more people to choose the bicycle as their method of transportation. The bicycle is increasingly becoming a part of your personal style and because of that people want stylish, safe and functional accessories. That is what we are trying to do.

2. Why this name “Bookman”?

It’s a long story but the short version is that it relates to our time at the university. Bookman means book nerd or a hard working student. We feel it was a good representation of all the hours of hard work we put in during our time at university, where we all met when we founded the company. We also liked that it wasn’t obvious what the brand was doing. It makes it interesting and easy to remember when you don’t immediately “get it”.

3. Where are you based and why? I live in Stockholm, Sweden. We’re all from Sweden so it was natural location for the company. Stockholm might be small but it’s a very creative and positive place, also during the last couple of years the bicycle scene has been growing a lot! New brands for bikes, accessories and cycle clothing have been started, there’s also a lot more cycle related events and projects.

4. Which bike do you ride? I ride two bikes, a vintage Gitane racer that has been converted in to a fixie and a Pelago Stavanger with gears and disc brakes. It means I have a bike for every kind of weather even when the snow is deep! 5. Any future project? We have several new projects in the pipeline, both extensions of existing products and completely new things you’ve never seen before! In addition to our own projects we also hope to realise some exciting joint projects this year.

SCISSORS AND WHEELS by Grace García 1. Tell us about your work it in a few lines

I am a graphic illustrator and consequently very attracted by the visual communication, that is why I make incursions in terrains like collage and photography.

I think that both my illustration and photography works are very subtle, ironic and in some cases have a bit of naughty humor. Over all, I try to transmit gracefulness.

2. How did your ideas come up?

They come up by themselves, because they are simply states of mind, emotions or just inspiration. Client orders need some brain work until I get how to express the subject.

3. Where are you based and why?

Any graphic subject is a challenge for me. From an article to a feeling or a song.

Ideas are based on anything from which I nourish... music, movies, books... and also on how I am, on my way to do things and transmit ideas.

4. You are a girl on wheels?

I think I am. I love riding my bike and also do some skate.

5. Any future projects?

There is a project next in which I am involved along 39 insane artists. For 2015 I have several things in mind, among them an individual expo and illustrations for a tale. There will sure be many interesting projects.

WALL RIDE by Grace García

1.Tell us about the project it in a few lines

Wall Ride is a wall mounted rack, design for those who want to proudly display their skateboard. The walls never risk getting dirty, the graphic is always in plain sight. At this project we invite people to leave their cares, open a beer and enjoy the ride!

2. Why Skate support. How did your idea come up?

Carolina twin brother does beautiful handmade skateboards. When we bought one we felt we needed a special place for it. Searching we realize that all skate supports were really similar and boring, that’s why we decide to design our own.

3.Who do you take your inspiration from?

For us inspiration can come from anywhere usually when you least expect, but you need to be able to reorganize the things you know and the resources you have in order to come up with brand-new ideas.

4. Where are you based and why?

At the moment we are based in Turin, Italy. But soon it may change. We have plans to go to Brazil, since Carolina is Brazilian and the country is proving to be very receptive to new ideas.

HARSA, ILLUSTRATION ON WHEELS by Grace García

1. Tell us about your work it in a few lines

My work is quite versatile and spans art, music, advertising, magazines, illustration, etc... I will adapt to any kind of concept and support  while keeping my own style. For me, art and life go together.

2. How did your ideas come up?

Sometimes at night, just before going to sleep because I work better when all is quiet. I take down ideas for future exhibits and projects in my notebook, never being able to disconnect. I keep a huge database of new characters that come up. On the other hand, I am an avid consumer of art, of anything that seems beautiful or calls my attention which has always an influence for the job.

3. Where are you based and why?

I am based on intuition, it is very important for it to be hand in hand with the concept and think alike the other person, or trying to feel like the observer of your own work. It is about empathy, which is something you may have or not.

4. You are a girl on wheels?

Of course! I'm a healthy person and I do like sports which help me to have a clarity of mind. I love anything going on wheels.

5. Any future projects?

Lately I am quite busy. There are several projects with Estudio Versus on the line to be released soon, I am involved in an awareness campaign against gender violence for Casa de la Mujer in Zaragoza. There are two exhibits in Valencia and Zaragoza for the next year, Collaborations for magazines... Besides, I'm thinking on releasing my own product line for Christmas. No time for social life!

OOPSMARK by Grace García

1. How did your idea come up? 

The idea came us kind of as a joke. I was working on other projects, and had been making custom leather accessories for years. I saw a beer 6-pack holder for a bike, and thought it was a good idea to make a wine rack for a bike. I put it up on Etsy, and everyone seemed to love it! I've been making them for 3 years now.

2. Why this name "Oopsmark"? 

The name came from something my said to me once while we were working together. I was making something and made a mistake, and I was annoyed and swore. She said that I didn't make a mistake; rather, I hit the "oopsmark." It came to mean something unexpected that happened that ended up being better than the original idea, or a mistake that you just have to work with until the end.

3. Why bikes accessories? 

I love biking. Montreal is the most bike friendly city in North America (according to the Copenhagen index), and it is so great to see people biking instead using cars. I try to design products that are unique, and something that I would like to use. 

4. Where are you based and why?

I live in Montreal, Canada. I've lived in a few cities in Canada and the US, and Montreal is my favourite. I love the lifestyle, the European influence, and the biking culture!

5. Which bike do you ride? 

I ride a 1944 Raleigh Rescue that I found in the garbage and fixed up. 

6. Any future project?

  So many! Right now we are finishing up on a great indoor garden system.

ACE ELECTRIC MOTORBIKES by Grace García

1. How did your idea come up?

In our era, where environmentally conscious products are in demand,  I ( Peter Grimaldi )  thought to fuse my affinity for classic American retro-style with today’s need for an eco-friendly motor bike.

 2. Why this name "ACE"?

“This is an all-American crafted machine capable of reaching incredible speeds through electric power... 40 km/h, that is why we named ACE... you’ll never buy gas again and it’s quick and quiet,”

3. Why bikes?

Because each machine is crafted by hand and meticulously custom built to order with an array of options. No two are the same and each has a character all their own. Big bike makers mass produce their simple versions of an electric bicycle. I  find these e-bikes crude, primitive and void of all character. Ace Electric Motorbikes are current and modern works of art.

4. Where are you based and why?

We are based in Matawan , New Jersey but for the European bikers GOW, let's say New York Greater Area

5. Which bike do you ride?

Ace electric motorbikes of course :-)

6. Any future project?

(Peter is currently working on the first ACE Electric Mountain Bike to add to his offerings.)

Art & Bikes

Art / Bicycles / Gastronomy / Solidarity

The 26th of June “Ca Lluis tapes i creativitat” (Lluis ́ Place- Tapas and Creativity) will inaugurate their solidarity initiative that will be entitled “ART & BIKES” and which consists of custom art of bicycles done by recognized artists, designers and illustrators who will donate 100% of the profits to social projects related to the world of cycling. 

The event begins the 26th of June with an auction of the art work, and will end the 9th of October when the checks are sent. 

This initiative will have several diverse phases: 

A) The 26th of June and the 17th and 18th of July and the 18 of September, the custom canvases will be auctioned off to raise money for the different associations that we are supporting and will be exhibited in between the auction dates. 

B) For those people who wish to collaborate economically for this cause and who can not afford a full canvas, we will have a piggy bank for solidarity. We will periodically update the money raised and publish it on our web. 

C) Of all the people who come to eat dinner at Ca Lluis and who would like to sign up in our client database, we will award one bicycle at random to one person in our database. 

D) The 9th of October we will send the checks to the different charity associations we are supporting. 

We wish to raise awareness about the benefits of using bicycles, modifying our habits to improve the quality of life in our cities and to transmit the idea that bikes are one of the most ecological, healthy and accessible ways to move around. The bicycle is a cheap and environmentally friendly transportation method. As soon as you ride oneyou begin to smile, you ́re exercising without even knowing it, zero carbon emissions, you save on gasoline, parking and traffic violations, traffic jams, you are reducing your chances for heart attacks, it ́s a first class aerobic exercise, it ́s cheap, fun and great to share with friends.... 

Here at Ca Lluis we are aiming to contribute to this project by working with different organizations that get bikes to people who are underprivileged and who need them to get around or just have fun.

VIVA BIKES by Grace García

1. How did your idea come up?

I wanted to make a bicycle range in Vintage style 7-8 years ago. WIth Viva owns design parts. To make some unit, the owner of the Viva bicycles would be proud of.

2. WhY this name “Viva Bikes"?

 Viva means to live and to be happy. Thats why

3. Why bikes?

Im a former cyclist from the Danish National team years ago. Had 10 bicycles shop before in Denmark. Wanted to create new things, and sold all the shops to start up Viva

4. Where are you based and why?

I was based in Copenhagen before. Moved to Thailand; Phuket 3 years ago. Wanted to live near the production, and found Phuket as a great exotic base. Near the sea and a place which gives me more energy for the creative work.

5. Which bike do you ride?

I have a stainless steel Viva racing bike with Campagnolo. Handmade to me. For dayli riding I have a Kilo. A model which we dont produce any more

6. Any future project?

Cargo bike and E bicycles are in the road map.

1. Tell us about your work it in a few lines

I am a French photographer & filmmaker based in Paris. i work for th music and fashion industry, but i am also active and involved in some other scenes like Motorcycle, BMX and skateboard for the simple reason that i do ride, and i am since very young, truly passionate about those lifestyle, cultures and sports.

2. Why bikes?

Because that’s my first love. i grew up on two wheels with pedals dreaming about two wheels with an engine. my first love is motocross, and this is the reason why i started riding BMX when i was 6 years old. i was mostly doing freestyle BMX in the streets with my brother. bikes with or without engine offers you a unique feeling of freedom and power, its all about feelings.

3. Where are you based and why?

I am based in Paris France, because this is where i’m from. I still ask myself sometimes why i do not live in California. The reason is that by still living in Paris, and be lucky enough to travel a lot, i keep enjoying mostly the good parts of California, i’m still exciting and amazed everytime i go there, and i travel to the US 4 to 7 times a year. Traveling made me appreciate and love more France and Paris, because i could compare.

4. You are a rider boy?

Yes i am. I am more focused on the riding aspect rather than the parts aspect. people love to collect, build and tune their bikes, i prefer riding. As people at Sideburn mag say « its not what you ride, its how you ride it"

5. Any future projects?

Many, i am getting ready to race my 1967 Triumph in Japan for The Hell On Wheels Vintage MX race may 3rd. I am also competing in the UK FlatTrack championship with my 1973 rigid 600cc BSA this year in the Vintage Class.

This is for riding. For photography, i just finished to shoot and direct the new campaign for watch brand www.march-lab.com, new images and films should be launched soon, i am working on a exhibition and book about hot chicks & oldschool BMX. and on the side i am working on launching a label that will offer interior decoration products…. and even a made in France skateboard. 1) Wrapping fabric around existing saddle frame to make a pattern around existing frame 2-3) Tracing pattern onto fabric 4) Cutting out saddle pattern 5) Transferring pattern onto styrene 6) Cutting pattern out of leather 7)Attaching leather to saddle using zip ties for testing 8) Dampening leather to allow it to mold to the back of the saddle 9) 1st mock up of saddle tied up for molding purposes 10) Hand-dying the saddle 11) A test debossing of the leather on a scrap piece of leather 12) Attaching the final, dyed pattern of leather to the saddle frame with rivet

1. Tell us about your work it in a few lines

Nothing interesting. I'm just a dog, just a wild dog.

And my work is not a work, it's just a pure art.

2. How did your crazy ideas come up?

They are always with me.

It's like a big attic with a lot of different stuff.

I just take some and use them.

3. Why Skate illustrations? 

It was a commercial project for Red Bull called Red Bull Skate Arcade. It was associated with skateboarding. That's it. It was amazing, I was making everything I want and they liked it.

4. Where are you based and why?

I'm from far east Russia, wild dogs grew me up there. Then we created a rock band together. If you have a band in Russia, you come to Moscow. You couldn't find a success in any another place, it's just impossible. So now I live in Moscow.

5. You are a skater boy?

No, but I used to skateboard with my dogs and others wild animals when I was younger. We walked to far east forest and tryed to find a tiger, and then we became friends with it. Tiger allowed us ride on him like on skate ramp. It was funny.

6. Any future projects?

I have many different new projects. For example, my super-power-cartoon about our jew friend who likes ice cream and fun.
