Lessons From Night Vale

I really liked the finale of WTNV. It was funny and I love how it was live. The audience made me want to be there myself. The ending itself was great, except for the part about Carlos. That part was kind of sad. Maybe it was because of the fact that it was a live show, but it was funnier than it usually is. I wish I was there myself to watch it live. I wonder how they portrayed the characters to the audience. The podcast as a whole was pretty fun to listen to. I thought I wouldn’t enjoy it because it was homework, but I grew onto it. I think I’ll listen to more episodes even after the class is over.

The Nausea excerpt was interesting but still hard to follow. I’m looking forward to exploring more about it in class. I think the nausea is the character’s overwhelming feeling of thought. The idea of existentialism is almost too much for him to handle, making him feel pain. The reading is rather dark. It’s interesting to see a different type of existential view. The narrator’s tone is negative, because he believes that objects do not wish to exist but are compelled to.

I agree that the existential thoughts were too much for him. I felt like because of his “pain” from these thoughts, it made everything more negative than it actually was.

Sartre Reading

I admit the reading was very confusing. When I was reading the beginning, I thought I was understanding the gist of it. However, as I kept reading, I just kept getting lost. On the bottom part of page one, he said “If you existed, you had to exist all the way…” I tried to understand that, but it was kind of difficult. The reading does exemplify existentialism because the narrator questioned a lot about the existence and the being of many things. I don’t know if I can make the same observations and make it less depressing (mostly because I was confused throughout most of the text).

Also, wanted to add that, while I was reading the text, I thought Sartre was stating all of these things in a individualistic standpoint.

HHG Response

Arthur, Ford, Zaphod, and Trillian get cornered while the police is shooting at them. They hide behind a computer but the computer starts to melt away. The shooting stops all of a sudden and Ford goes out to take a look. The two policemen are dead. There is an aircar waiting for them and Arthur notices that it belongs to Slartibartfast.

The book never tells us who exactly saved the four but Slartibartfast’s car is left behind. Do you think Slartibartfast killed the police and saved the four? If not, who did?

I wondered the same thing, but I think it was Slartibartfast because he just disappeared, leaving behind his aircar and a note for them.

HHG Response

The mice that they all meet want to go through Arthur’s brain to find the real question to the answer “42.” The police come, to arrest Zaphod, and start shooting at the characters. The computer starts to melt and then the policemen are found dead. Slartibartfast let them his aircar, which makes me wonder if he was the one that killed the police car (ship?) and the policemen. I’m kind of sad that the book ended with a cliffhanger feeling.

My question is: How do you feel about the ending? Amused, disappointed, etc? And who do you think killed the policemen?

Compare/Contrast

In HHG, one of the most interesting element to me is Magrathea. The concept of it was unique and it definitely seems like what modern rich people would do if they had the chance. In WTNV, I found the glow cloud very interesting. It was interesting because a blob of colors appeared out of nowhere and started to do weird and different things.

Summer Reading Program

When I first read the book “Please Look After Mom,” I was blown away. It was originally wrote in Korean, but I read the translated version. It described many feelings and descriptions that I had never thought about before. It was moving because the story is about a family and their struggle to find their mother. The details of the novel sounded so realistic and it describes just how people react in our lives now.Even though there are some romanized texts (Korean words, but written with English letters), I would definitely recommend this book.

HHG Ch. 26-30

I found it funny when Deep Thought came up with the answer to life and everything was 42. It took Deep Thought seven and a half million years to come up with the answer. Loonquawl and Phouchg were disappointed with the answer.

What do you think 42 stands for, if anything? Or is it just a random answer that Deep Thought had to give since maybe there is no real answer to life?

When I first read it, I just thought it was random. But now I also wonder if there is a deeper meaning behind it.

HHG Ch. 26-30

It was amusing to read that after waiting for so long for Deep Thought to give an answer, it didn’t make any sense. I didn’t understand it either. Does “42″ have any meaning or is it just random and nothing? Eh, maybe we’ll never know. I also wonder what Vranx’s reason was for Zaphod to steal the Heart of Gold. It’s so secretive that Zaphod hid it from his own self.

My question is: Towards the end of the reading, they’re all called to meet the mice. What do you think will happen at the meeting? Will it have to do something with the second earth?

Big Question

My question is: Are there actually greater beings than humans? Whether they are from space or just other creatures on this earth. I’ve never really thought about it because for many years, humans have built and invented things, so I assumed humans were superior.

We are introduced to a few new characters. Arthur meets an old man named Slartibarfast and he takes Arthur inside Magrathea. Then we are told about how the dolphins knew what was going to happen to earth, tried to warn the humans about it, and were misinterpreted by the humans, so they gave up. Their final message to human-kind was “so long and thanks for all the fish” and escaped just before the Vogons destroyed the planet. Then we’re told that there’s a more sophisticated than dolphins, which are said to be “running around inside wheels” in behavioral research laboratories. And later we’re introduced to Lunkwill and Fook, who ask a computer named Deep Thought for the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

Now reading “behavioral research laboratories” makes me think of lab rats, which then draws my attention to the two white mice that Trillian has with her. My question is: is the author foreshadowing something that involves the two mice Trillian brought along, or does he have something else in mind?

I never made that connection. Hmmm. Maybe the mice will contribute in making a new Earth since the last one was destroyed?

I like the new character. The old man seems amusing. It was interesting to read about how dolphins are a greater species than humans and how there is another species that is greater than both. I guessed mice because they run on wheels and through mazes in labs.

My question is: The super computer Deep Thought said it was the second most powerful computer in the galaxy. What do you think the first one is?
