what you’ve done.
He watches the sympathy fade from her expression, the sound of concern shift to something else– and it’s almost a relief, to be blamed.
Meiko has a sound as ethereal as Kaito’s, so perfectly matched to every rise and fall in voice, every movement, in a way that could never be attained by a human. But the violent shift it takes on now is surely unique to Meiko…
And he lets himself be yanked around and shouted at without resistance (without reaction as well, the same listless expression staying in place), his arms limp at his sides– if she hurts him, it is only warranted.
“You don’t know,” Bansai responds, almost disbelieving. “Kaito-san never told you…?”
(Were Kaito here, he would be interrupting right now– but Bansai’s version of reality is a twisted, unforgiving one.)
He places one hand on the woman’s shoulder, forces himself not to avert his gaze. “I did the worst thing anyone could have done. I killed him.”
She watches him with focused eyes, as he speaks--rather, questions her, at first,
but then he admits to the crime he’s committed, and her gaze shifts downward, staring hard at what almost seems to be nothing for a moment.
Her grip on Bansai slips ever-so-slightly, as if she’s going to release him--and then without any warning Meiko raises a fist and strikes a punch hard across the man’s face.
It’s bound to hurt, she thinks, considering her underlying core is metal, but for a moment that seems fine. She wants it to hurt, wants him to suffer for what he did--
And then she pauses, with the same fist raised in mid-air as though poised to strike again, the other hand gripping his collar again as the look in her eyes goes from livid anger to confusion. No... Why would he even do such a thing? What the hell could’ve possibly compelled Bansai to kill Kaito, to do something so horrible to someone so innocent that he... didn’t they love each other?
The raised fist lowers, slowly, before going limp at her side. And Meiko, for a moment, is silently staring at the man before her, until a quiet question escapes her lips.
“Why?”
