One thing I wish more gentiles understood is that modern Judaism is post-apocalyptic, and every Jew they've ever met is living after the apocalypse.
It's always fun when you see smoochy fanart of two characters you don't recognize, and it's just tagged something like #glorpaflomp and you're like, well, I'll never know what that was but I'm glad people are having a good time.
7-page story adapted from the Nart sagas of the Caucasus region, detailing the sordid origin of the hero Sozruquo, aka Sosruko, aka Shoshlan.
reading about jewish history is depressing bc it’s like this endless cycle of, “we were doing okay for a bit and even managed to partially integrate, but the political climate changed and we’re once again heavily persecuted if not outright murdered. ce la vie!”
i want gentiles to understand that Diaspora jews are getting squirrely rn bc we’ve been through this before and we can Tell the current period of relative acceptance is ending and we’re in for some shit.
this is from 2019
You can tell it’s from 2019 because it has more than 300 notes.
You can’t even spell it. “I DID IT I SAID FUCK ISREAL FIRST AND GOT MY GOOD PERSON BADGE FOR MAKING THIS DISCUSSION ABOUT ISRAEL SO NOW I CAN PRETEND TO CARE ABOUT JEWS!”
“Israel as an entity…. Irredeemably evil, spurred on the worst of humanity” Ah. the “But what was the irredeemably evil entity wearing” but for International relations. These people don’t give a single shit about Jews, they don’t care about Palestinians or anyone else either. They want an easy enemy to hate and they need to flex their Good Person cred for their fandom-tier activist spaces that rigorously self-police through violent, coercive language and high social control while cheering on violence towards people who it is acceptable to hate, and if you think this stops with Jews I have a bridge to sell you.
Greek Helmet Creativity Contest
Who wins?
A million dollar worth budget Hollywood movie in mid-2020s or a budgeted Greek film of mid-1970s?
Iphigenia (1977) | dir. Michael Cacoyannis
THIS is what happens when you allow the Greeks show their passion for their own history and mythology! Iphigenia (1977) based on the play "Iphigenia en Aulis", an Oscar-nominated film by Michel Cacoyannis and exclusively Greek casting
And here the phenomenal Irene Papas that we enjoy to "L'Odyssea (1968)" as Penelope and to "The Odyssey (1997)" as Anticlea now giving her all and in her own voice and language as Clytemnestra and her equally phenomenal co-protagonist Kostas Kazakos as Agamemnon have this heart-wrenching performance 😭😭
The seer PAIN and GUILT in his voice is killing me! "How can I answer such an inhuman question in a humane way?" My heart! 😭 and the way SHE stands her ground against his sadness that comes off as anger! "Your silence is enough" gosh! 😭 the seer pain of a mother and a father here! No Agamemnon laughing manichaly into the night of how how he gets his precious money from the war spoils but a father about to do the most inhumane thing to appease the gods for his hubris and a mother now realizing beyond any shade of doubt and being broken by it!
Dunno guys what kind of movies you expect in the cinema for greek mythology but THIS is the type I expect!
Another Cacoyannis adaptation of Euripides, this time "Electra".
Irene Papas stars again as Electra, with Aleka Katseli as Clytaemnestra and Giannis Fertis as Orestes. Some of the cream of the crop of the greek stage starred in Cacoyannis' movies.
turns out emily wilson instantly dismisses any criticism of her work as misogyny lmao
seriously, how can a person be this stuck-up about their own work? reviewing other's writing is an important part of academia!
and assumedly according to this the above implies she doesnt care about greek and italian people getting their beaches and seas filled with shit by nolan's prop team.
where is your nuance emily!!!! there are a lot of people who care very deeply about this poem.
You gotta love the interviewer that is obviously not biased at all lmao 🙄
"Ownership" lol! Like ok some American billionaire and some Americans "own it" then I suppose? Any criticism of the average person who actually has been to Greece and seen Greek people I guess is just invalid and claim "ownership" then? I guess the Greeks have no saying at how THEIR OWN CULTURE is being abused by Hollywood for decades? Or of course she would turn it into a gender and race war because honestly she has no arguments
Also she tries to convince us that she spent ner entire life studying homeric greek and that she somehow has the key to everything?
Please Emily! I might not be studying homeric Greek as much as you claim to do (which needs analysis on its own) and even I can tell that there is much to be said here!
Emily Wilson: Translation is subjective. Everyone can bring their personal perspective to it
Also Emily Wilson: anyone who says my translation is not accurate or that they critisize a film that claims to love my translation is clearly ignorant and have not studied as long as I have. Also yeah of course everything is about race and gender wars. People have problem with it just because I am a woman and they cannot stand a creator that actually cares for women because Homer who? No he didn't care for his women. Trust me. I have studied Homer better than many especially those who critisize me. Those do not know Homer like I do!
Because Greeks as we know don't exist and even if they do they have no rights 🙄
I think Nolan’s Odyssey is yet another example of why color blind casting is a bad idea and how it can straight up circle back to being racist. Like Nolan casts a black Helen, then has her getting her face scarred by her white husband as punishment (mind you NONE of this happens in mythology), is that not insane? Is that not racist?
Same energy with retellings that make Andromeda black only to make Perseus an abuser, yet that same retelling would still get praised for its racial representation.
same vibes as black snape in that new harry potter series... snape... the guy harry looks at and immediately determines is evil... ouch
tatiana papamoschou iphigenia in the 1977 film
