Tom Nook is a shop owner who later gets into real estate, and he is very work-driven, but a friendly and helpful fellow. He denies the idea that he's a corrupt businessman, but figures he might as well embrace it if it gets people to pay off their debts. At least he doesn't seem to charge interest and you can pay him off whenever. He really is pretty nice once you get to know him! And hey, you know what they say about tanukis...
