Deep blue boulder opal by boulderopalbill Opals are divided by two types ~ Hydrophane and non-hydrophane, this is a reference to the pores in the opal, as all of the color you see in the opal are caused by refraction of water contained within the pores of the stone. Hydrophane's don't evaporate water from within as quickly as non-hydrophanes, thus non-hydrophanes must be kept and stored within water or oil, so that it does not lose its color or crack (craze) from loss of water. Hydrophane also means water absorbant, or water attracting. For these reasons, hydrophanes are kept outside of water and non-hydrophanes are kept in water. This specimen in particular is a hydrophane and ergo doesn't need to be kept inside water.
