Okay, after my rant about how one of the TADC actors has been getting bullied for supporting an unpopular ship, I have to speak out on something.
Is it just me, or has the TADC fandom turned very close-minded when it comes to ships?
For the record, this show will never touch on romance, aside from the canon Kinger x Queenie; every other bond in the show is purely platonic. That being said, the creator and cast of Digital Circus allowed the fandom free rein with shipping, particularly since certain interactions might accidentally come off as romance-laden anyway.
Somehow, despite the vast amount of freedom the shippers were granted...
For some reason, people always default to FunnyBunny (Pomni x Jax) and Abstragedy (Gangle x Zooble).
And I'm over here like, why??? So many options to choose from, and yet about half of the fandom always goes for these two particular ships.
It's also kind of led to an elitism problem in the fandom, wherein FunnyBunny and Abstragedy stans act hostile towards people who support other ships, like RagaPom and Ribbun. Another factor to this surge of arrogance is people hyping up FunnyBunny and Abstragedy as "the objectively best ships", which contributes to the elitism problem and eventually leads to backlash among people who don't ship either of them.
I'm especially hard on the insane FunnyBunnyers because the exact circumstances behind this ship's popularity aren't exactly politically-correct--especially for such a femme-led and queer fanbase.
That being said, I have nothing against FunnyBunny or Abstragedy as ships themselves--they've certainly got their own appeals, and I have a good idea as to their respective dynamics.
Personally, though, my big OTP is Ragapom (Pomni x Ragatha), and a little bit of FunnyBunnyDoll (Pomni x Ragatha x Jax).
On the other hand, I also have respect for people whose own OTPs tend to be more "niche", less popular ships. For instance,
BunnyDoll (Ragatha x Jax), despite the damage it took after Episode 5, is still going on strong, with amazing fanart and theories to boot.
Ribbun (Jax x Gangle) as well--even without Gangle's own VA adamantly supporting it, there's an element of interest in how the characters bounce off of each other.
JesterRibbons (Pomni x Gangle) also has a following as an "unexpected besties" ship.
Hell, there's RoyalRabbit (Jax x Kinger) as a "left field ship"! Perhaps a little too "out there", but there's still potential for exploring the contrast between the two still-living male humans.
It's also led to a bit of a realization as I checked out the streams involving the cast. From the Streamily signings to the game sessions to the panels to the simple hangouts...
FunnyBunny has barely been mentioned all across them all.
And when it did get focused upon during a Michael Kovach (Jax) signing stream, that led to a disaster at the expense of poor Michael's sense of comfort and boundaries.
Meanwhile, since the early days of the show, the actors have instead mostly talked about ships that tend to get criticism or outright hatred nowadays. To start with:
Over half the main cast ships RagaPom/JesterDoll/ButtonBlossom.
Lizzie Freeman (Pomni) and Amanda Hufford (Ragatha) love to play into it in flirty ways, Ashley Nichols (Zooble) is wholeheartedly there for it, and Marissa Lenti/Vixen (Gangle) likes it on the basis that it's a wholesome ship for Pomni.
Meanwhile, Amanda and Michael are always down to indulge in BunnyDoll, and have done so for a little over two years now. As a matter of fact, so far, it seems that Michael has entertained BunnyDoll and Ribbun much more than FunnyBunny overall.
Of course, Ashley and Marissa also support Abstragedy, as shown as when they both did a watch party of Episode 7 together.
Point being, I respect that the VAs encourage us to explore the ships and not stick solely to FunnyBunny and Abstragedy.
Listen, I can get it if certain ships don't strike your fancy, but you never know until you try them out! No one is stopping you from supporting more than one ship, and none of them will be canon anyway, so don't be shy!
I mean, I love RagaPom, but I also have an interest in FunnyGummy, FunnyBunny, and JesterRibbons. And I'm pretty open to a lot of Ragatha ships, including BunnyDoll and RagaRibbons.
Whatever happened to "freedom of choice"? Why must a majority of the shippers default to the same thing? There are a lot of ships with potential and interest to them, as well as their own appeals. If a ship doesn't really appeal to you, that's fine, but don't look down on those who are drawn to that same ship.
Ultimately, let's take care not to stagnate the Digital Circus shipping scene.
