Also scary as prior Lore states that the Circulus is the only Truly Surefire way to do Continuity, which implies a Servant might be picked and narrowly escape several times, or that an Orokin COULD just. Die. Or even that they have to repeat the process to make it work. Terrifying!

One does wonder if the reason Roathe's parents just threw him to the school was that he was Roathe 5.8 or something? That the previous kids had failed the school or even the Halls of Ascension? In any case, I do like the implication of what lesson he took from school. Instead of "I can do anything, and it does not matter!" he took "Lives are cheap here, best you protect yours." Which then applied to how he was as a general and how he saw his troops/others. And how he ended up seeing the Yuvan Theatre. As a source of loss.

Several years ago, can't remember when, I started working on eliminating ableist language from my vocabulary. I'm by no means perfect and still make mistakes, but ever since I started doing it, I've noticed interesting things that have happened that I can't help but point out.

Much of language is short-hand, right? We come up with euphemisms and the like to communicate what we think because it's faster. It's fast and easy to say "They're crazy." or "They're just dumb." and people around us get what we're saying.

But I found that when I tried to not use words like that to describe things or people, it made me take a closer look at the person's behavior and identify what they were actually doing. When I did that, I saw behavior that was deliberate, emotionally driven, accidental, or incidental. Instead of dismissing it with a single word, I could explain it, and understand. Many times, people do things that are called "insane" or "crazy" or "deranged" but are actually just illogical or unreasonable, often driven by desperation, risk, desire for power, influence, and many times, misinformation. In looking for new language, it helped me to see things differently. It taught me to not dismiss things, and see them for what they really are.

I've had people tell me that they're "dumb" or "stupid" because they didn't understand something and when I've gently told them "Nah, you're not dumb." and then work out why they feel that way, it helps give them confidence to work through whatever it is they're trying to do. They're not dismissed. It's happened with friends, family, and adult learners I work with. Maybe the material is not worded correctly, or needs to be worded differently, or needs to be walked-through, or the person needs hands-on, or role-plays, or examples, repetition, or a combo of any. To me no one is "dumb" or "stupid" or "crazy" or "idiotic" or any of those words.

I also try to share posts with those words, but I miss stuff often. It's not perfect, but I have found that the other little practices I've done have really had an impact on me.

Wanted to add an example onto this of something I just encountered as an example of my thought process. I think it's also an example of sanism, but I won't get into that.

An account on twitter, Housing For All, which is a mutual aid account that posts a lot about issues regarding housing, posted this tweet on May 1st.

Another account then quote-tweeted them with screenshots of someone in the comments who denied the stat and asked for evidence. When presented with facts from the USHIC website, the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness reporting that 40-60% of people have a job, they called it "Absolutely 100% bullshit." because the people she worked with in homeless systems were always drug addicts.

(Interjecting here to say that I'm aware that Amanda Paine could be a bot but I can tell you with 100% certainty that countless real people and whole political parties hold these views, so I'm treating her as a real person.)

The quote-tweeting account, @.daveneworld_2 shares this to exhibit someone proudly denying facts, and says that this person has "serious mental issues"

This is where my brain resists. Maybe it's just, but me I read "mental issues" as dismissive, and maybe even pejorative in this context. Maybe they're not trying to say that she's mentally ill, but definitely "there's something wrong with her." But in my head, what I think is going on here isn't that Amanda has mental issues, but that she's experiencing denialism.

Denialism isn't a "mental issue," it's a behavior. There are countless articles about it and papers, such as this one that go into why it happens and what to do about it. This one blog I found (that I can't read more into because it's behind a paywall) explains it as such:

"In human behavior and psychology, denialism is a term that captures an individual’s choice to reject reality as a way to evade acknowledging an uncomfortable truth. It is characterized by the refusal to accept the existence, truth, or validity of something, regardless of solid evidence or proof substantiating its reality. Intrinsic to human nature, denialism often stems from an innate defense mechanism to avoid cognitive dissonance — the mental stress or discomfort arising from simultaneously holding two or more contradictory beliefs. " - Ilene S. Cohen, Ph.D

See the reason that Amanda denies the fact about unhoused people isn't that she has "mental issues" it's because if she accepted the data as fact, it would absolutely upend her entire worldview. People who say that unhoused people are "all drug addicts" are fervent believers in personal responsibility and that anything bad that happens to you is your fault. Could it be that unhoused people became that way because of systemic issues such as continuing unaffordable housing prices, losing their jobs, sudden expenses that depleted their savings, disability, and other factors such as medical costs being unaffordable? No! It's because they're all drug addicts.

To people who believe like Amanda, homelessness can't be due to systemic issues because that would mean there's something wrong with how the whole thing operates. If they followed that thought process, it would begin investigation that would likely lead them down the path to acknowledge things they won't believe exist or don't want to exist, such as systemic racism and ableism. Acknowledging systemic racism in the US forces one to acknowledge its history, and one contributes or benefits from it, and that's something a lot of people absolutely refuse to do.

Also, notice how in the quote tweets that @.daveneworld_2 shared, one shows that Amanda is also a fervent supporter of Israel. Aside from this showing that she's pro-genocide piece of shit, it also makes sense in the context of her views on homelessness because, just has she believes homeless people became that way by their own doing, she likely does not believe that Palestinians undergoing genocide at the hands imperialist states, and that what's happening to them is their own fault.

This is how I see this, and similar groups of people, like Q-Anon, MAGAts, flat-earthers, etc. I don't see these people as having any type of mental issue, I see them as people who CHOOSE to deny facts or be cruel and hurt others to reinforce their white supremacist beliefs about other people and the world around them.

Something that I don't think I've touched but that some comments reminded me of, is this isn't just learning to really analyze people's behavior and see it for what it really is. It is, at it's core about stopping the practice of insulting, degrading, and dehumanizing people on the basis of intelligence, or disability, or mental illness. It's about analyzing why that is a thing and why we feel the need to do it to others. Learning about sanism and ableism's history, eugenecist origins, how they exist today, and their relationship to white supremacy. For me, it's about growing.

In my opinion, the central conceit of Warframe—that you are a Tenno, whose most pivotal power is not destruction but connection—works much, much more effectively when Warframes are interpreted as full beings in their own right, and not just "meat suits" with mere echoes of personality remaining.

For game design reasons (i.e. blueprint acquisition, Helminth system, they don't want to produce unique AI and scripts for every Warframe), they must all be treated as game items, and there have been attempts to explain them in canon as inanimate, Tenno-made replicas. And I'm not saying that this shouldn't be possible at all or that you can't tell that story. It's just not the only way the game of Warframe can or should be interpreted.

The gameplay is about Warframe combat, but the thematic point is that Warframes (and their Tenno) are not mere weapons or tools. That's what the Orokin wanted, and it's why they failed. The Orokin wanted Warframes who were bodies without their own wills, mass-produced responsive war machines. They never got that. Warframes are certainly animalistic, but they are also intelligent, with mannerisms and thought patterns now alien to humans. They can spiral into Infested madness without help, and the solution is for a Tenno to meet them where they are, as the no-longer-human but still person they have become.

Transference is to connect with the person that the Warframe is, to "see inside an ugly, broken thing—and take away its pain." If every Warframe our characters use (save Umbra) is merely an echo of a dead person, they no longer involve this present compassion and care. They no longer channel the essence of what being Tenno means. You can still sprint, bullet-jump, and fire off abilities in an inanimate Warframe, yes, but thematically speaking, that's not and never has been the point.

Warframe is about the power of connection and love. Transference, on its deepest thematic level, is love. It's a Tenno stalwartly acknowledging a Warframe's personhood, communicating with them and taking their needs seriously even when it's not straightforward. It's a Warframe entrusting another with shared control, holding their Tenno close in their very body as they fight in tandem.

Great storytelling comes from embracing, accepting, and confronting the idea that Warframes are beings with their own needs and alternative methods of communication. Both Tenno and Warframes were once merely human, but have since transformed into something both "more" and "less". Their extraordinary abilities come with deep scars and a fundamental disconnection from their former kind, whether that's due to ageless immortality or physical transformation. Most humans can no longer understand what they've been through. In the wake of this ruin, they reach out to one another.

ok so this is another long shot but a few years ago there was a twitter post (in japanese i think?) that had measurememts for how to make this book stand thing out of cardboard that you could use to double up books and use up more space on shelves

so anyway here is the diagram for anyone else who is interested!!

this requires pretty big carboard pieces, if you have a really big box or something you can make it from one piece, but if you don't, you can also just make each of the pieces individually and then tape them together

and then in the end you put it together like this!!

and then when you make a bunch you can put them all next to each other and stack your books like crazy

I want to tell a story to the artists and would-be artists out there.

When I was 19, I made a large oil painting of the nerd I would eventually marry. I poured all my attention and care into this painting. It's the only art I have from back then that still holds up as a work I'm proud of today.

I entered it into a judged show at the local art center. It got an honorable mention. I went to see the show with my beloved model. One of the judges came up to talk to me, and highlighted that all the judges really liked the painting. It would have placed, except, you see, the feet were incorrect. They were too wide and short, and if I just studied a bit more anatomy-

I called over my future wife, and asked her to take off her shoe. Being already very used to humoring me, she did. The judge looked at her very short, very wide little foot. Exactly as I'd lovingly rendered it. I would never edit her appearance in any way.

The judge looked me in the eye, and to his credit, he really looked like he meant it when he said "Oh I'm so sorry."

Anyways the moral of the story is that all of those anatomy books that teach you proportions are either showing you averages, or a very specific idea of an idealized body. Actual bodies are much more varied than that.

So don't forget to draw from observation, and remember that humans aren't mass produced mannequins. Delight in our variation. Because it's supposed to be there.

Allright if 20,000 people are going to post a story about a painting I did of my wife, then I am going to post the painting itself.

For those calling for justice, the same painting won a contest at my college (my university professor had met my model), and the university bought it from me and hung it up there for over a decade, square little feet and all. Then, the library underwent renovations and a librarian I am thankful for forever went through heroic measures to track me down again even though I'd gotten married and changed my name, and offered it back to me. And now it hangs in our house even though my wife doesn't ordinarily want to look at paintings of herself and I don't normally want to look at paintings I made. We both have a soft spot for this one.
