“i can finally reach the buffet table without any problem. It’s like heaven.” she laughed: “plus I don’t have to drag another three meters with me which is always nice.” perhaps the only downside to her outfit was the corset although she had gotten used to that years ago.

Chuckling, Glitter nodded.  “I don’t know why pants aren’t more acceptable.  I generally hate these fancy dresses, but I guess I’m lucky my stylists tend to go the tight sexy dress route rather than the oversized princess gown.”

“for the first time in many many years. I mean look at these pants.” she half joked although her outfit did cheer her more up than she would ever dare to admit: “how could I not enjoy it?”

Glitter smiled at Clover’s comment.  “They’re very nice pants,” she told her.  “I bet it’s nice to not have an obnoxiously large skirt to deal with.”  Glitter’s dress wasn’t too over the top, but it was just another ball gown.

It was the first time ever that Clover got to wear pants at a ball and she couldn’t help but enjoy this one a little more just for that reason alone. Strutting around in her costume she chuckled softly as she watched the people around her feeling more secure than she would if she were to once again wear a flimsy dress for the ball: “and how are you tonight ?”

Glitter offered Clover a smile as she sipped her drink.  “I’m fine,” she assured the other woman.  “How are you?  Enjoying the party?”  She didn’t know Clover truly well enough to know if she was the type that liked these balls.

Lines seemed to dart across everything, as far as what the most capable version of himself knew. Lines of white blurred into the table they were separated onto, a line from today hardly distinguishable from the line from the day before or last week. A line between his responsibilities as a parent and his ability to perform them was expanding wildly and he couldn’t remember exactly if Cordelia already knew how to walk or if he was seeing her do it for the first time. He crossed boundary and relationship lines on a regular basis. Abusing his power as a victor to get what he wanted, whenever he wanted. He abandoned the people who cared about him in exchange for people he could barely count on to pull him from the gutter if he happened to stumble into it. The last line blurred between the face of his husband who still made his heart flutter when he thought about him and the face of the man who injected his life with blissful apathy he’d forgotten existed. The last line concerned him most when his train of thought allowed for worry.

He didn’t know if Skye was dead or alive or what, but Kai stopped caring long before he realized he had. Instead of tuning into the Games, the mentor planted his butt on his sofa and watched mindless television. Eyes weighed down by gray-ish bags, he wouldn’t notice if a elephant walked in, much less another person. 

With her tributes out of the running, all Glitter had to do was kill time until the Games ended and she could go home.  She wanted to leave now but she also wasn’t going to give people the satisfaction of saying she couldn’t even stay in the Capitol.  She was too petty to let them say what they wanted.

Instead she arrived on the fourth floor and saw Kai looking...very out of it.  “Hey,” she said as she tried to get his attention.  “I told Neptune he could come up here and play with the twins.  Are they here or did Marina take them somewhere?”

“I-” his tongue was already trying to find an excuse to defend his husband’s actions, but once his brain caught up he found that he had none, too drained to even fool himself: “Yeah you could- kinda say that, i guess.” Rubbing soothing circles over his forehead he tried to calm the prodding feeling against his skull. “I just- I don’t even have any clue what is going on- least of all what I can do to help. It’s very- frustrating.”

Glitter understood.  While River never spiraled this bad, when he slipped into his major depressive episodes she had a lot of slack to carry.  “It is.  Have you tried talking to him or is that just a waste of time?”  Glitter had some experience in that too.  SOmetimes it was just like talking to a wall.

He was barely able to look Glitter in the eye sure that most of the fourth floor inhabitants had already noticed what was going on with Kai. “It’s- it’s not really-” zephyr didn’t know how to phrase everything wrong at the moment.he usually prided himself in having the control over the situation, but he had never felt so helpless before.”it’s just-really a lot.”

Glitter wasn’t truly sure what was going on with Kai, other than he was making an ass of himself.  It was stupid, but she wasn’t the type to say that to Zephyr’s face.  It wasn’t her place to interfere.  She’d leave that to Zephyr, Marina, and River.  “I’m sure.  Kai’s just sort of leaving you to pick up the slack, isn’t he?”

“Yeah no I am fine-” he muttered softly falling onto the couch quietly running his fingers over the dark circles under his eyes that came from caring for two children on his own while constantly worrying about his husband and wondering whether he would even make it home alive ever evening.

“Anyways- I am sure there is a way I can help you?”

Glitter’s brow arched as she watched Zephyr.  “You’re as fine as I am,” she told him.  “Which means you aren’t fine at all.  What’s wrong?”

Burly and Dandelion were gone. She signed the paperwork, collected the bodies, and shipped them home. Tomorrow morning she would make that call to the parents she’d failed, but tonight she’d drink until she didn’t hurt anymore. She sat for a moment in the lounge, eyes on her lap and dagger twirling effortlessly between her fingers. She wanted to dig this straight through Battenberg’s ribcage. The fantasy was old, but easy to conjure. She could almost feel the hot blood on her hands, and hear the woman’s gasp. 

Footsteps down the hallway pulled her out of her thoughts. She looked up, her lips set in a sharp line.

Glitter barely had the energy to look at the launch.  She did.  She saw Stellina had survived so far at least.  That was good enough.  She’d dropped Neptune off with the child care center and had Tetra on her hip.  The infant was the only thing that seemed to calm the raging storm inside her.  Glitter didn’t know what else she could do.

She had headed down the hall only to stop when she saw Olive.  “Something on your mind, Olive?”

Satine watched Glitter kiss Tetra was a fond smile, ignoring the ache in her heart that was already missing her younger siblings. She’d have to ask her step-mom to let her talk to them when she made her nightly Games season phone-call later. “I think Kahente would be happy, though,” she said softly. “If she could see us.”

The mention of Kahente brought a familiar lump to Glitter’s throat.  It had been six months.  It wasn’t enough time for the pain to stop.  Her grip on Tetra tightened ever so slightly and she nodded.  “Yeah,” Glitter murmured.  “She probably would.”  But truthfully, Glitter didn’t really know what Kahente would think.  Satine knew Kahente better than she ever would.

“For the aesthetic,” Stellina said, inwardly cringing at how like Carina that sounded. “And because if you want to stab someone, it’s gonna be easier to use a knife than, like, your nails or something.” She looked down at her own nails, thoroughly buffed and shined by her stylist. They’d been crusted in Kane’s blood once. She could taste it on her tongue still sometimes. “I should warn you, my trainers back home hated hand-to-hand with me because I’m all teeth and claws. Should I… you know, hold back on that with you?”

“Exactly,” Glitter told the woman softly.  “You probably should unless you want me to truly hurt you.  That’s not a good plan for either of us.”  She smirked then, stepping over towards the mats.  “Let’s give this a go, Stellina.”

Remy nodded, closing her eyes to try and focus on her breath. She never lost control of herself like this, but she did feel everything so deeply that it didn’t surprise her that she’d felt every second of re-watching Glitter’s games as if she were living them herself. She exhaled once more and smoothed out her dress, delicately dabbing at the tears pooling in her eyes. 

She squeezed Glitter’s hand in reply when she took it in hers. She took the time to listen, trying to continue to understand the complex woman beside her. “It’s brave,” Remy insisted. “It’s brave to keep going when things are difficult, even if it doesn’t feel like it is.” She shifted automatically closer to Glitter and rested her head on the older woman’s shoulder, sighing audibly. “I hope it’s okay that I watched those,” she added quietly. “I just wanted to know.” 

Glitter didn’t want to argue.  She didn’t want to keep arguing with Remy over how brave the situation was.  Something told her the young woman wasn’t about to budge on the subject.  Her brow rose when Remy rested her head on her shoulder, but Glitter just put her arm around the girl and let her stay there until she calmed down.  After having children, she had gotten better at providing comfort to people.  And thankfully Glitter didn’t have the issues with physical contact some of the mentors had.

“It’s fine,” Glitter told her after a few moments of silence.  “I haven’t ever rewatched it,” she admitted.  “I honestly don’t know what is on that highlight reel.”  All she knew was what she could remember of her time in the arena.  Those were memories she wished she could forget.

Satine focused on Tetra as she babbled, listening to her nonsense words and nodding along as though she understood their meaning. “You’re right, Tetra,” she said seriously. “I completely agree. You’re so clever!” She smiled at her fondly, looking back up at Glitter with the same expression. “I’m glad we have each-other through this,” she said. “You and me. Who’d have thought we’d make such a great team this time last year?”

Tetra giggled happily and Glitter smiled at both her daughter and Satine.  As much as she would never truly admit it, she appreciated Satine being there.  With River in District Four, she knew she would need some help with Neptune and Tetra during the Games.  She trusted Satine with that.  Glitter dropped a kiss to the top of her daughter’s head before sighing.  “No,” she admitted.  “I don’t think either one of us ever saw this coming.”

Cyprian raised his eyebrows, letting the sword come down from its position to rest with its blade pointing to the floor, a safer position for a conversation, as Glitter would know. “You wouldn’t be the first with that opinion,” he commented, looking down at the tip of the sword poking into the mat with a little indentation. “Give me a break, I’m a little rusty. I haven’t used the swords here for six months, and the Academy ones are good, but not perfect. You’d know, right?” 

Glitter nodded once.  She knew the Academy weapons and the Tower weapons were two different caliber of weapon, but that didn’t change the fact that blaming the weapon for poor swordsmanship never flew with her.  “So you’re blaming the swords for being rusty?  It’s not their fault.”

Remy dried her tears, one more soft sob escaping her lips before she managed a deep, shaking breath to calm herself down. The soft music of the Games menu played, but she had no intentions of watching any more highlight reels today. Glitter’s was more than enough. 

“No, but you were,” she said eagerly, turning to look up at the mentor with wide eyes. “You were, you were so brave. And you are, even now. Handling everything every year, you’re so strong and you’re-” Remy stopped herself before she continued, wanting to catch herself from breaking down into sobs again. She buried her face in her hands, trying to calm herself down. 

It was a strange sensation, to be praised for her Games.  The actions she made over twenty years ago were burned into her memory like some awful, yet vivid, dream.  She could never forget what happened, no matter how hard she tried.  “Just take a couple deep breaths,” she told Remy.  Glitter wasn’t great at dealing with other people’s feelings, but she spent enough time married to River to get the gist of calming people down.

Carefully, Glitter reached out to take Remy’s hand.  “Remy,” she started.  “I handle everything every year because I have to,” she told her.  “I handled my arena because I had to.  If I took the time to stop and process everything that happened...I wouldn’t be me anymore.  I wouldn’t be able to handle it.  It takes a lot of work to glue yourself back together, but I’ve gotten good at hiding the cracks.”

She wanted to go straight for the weapons, but common sense was holding her back. “I feel like I’ll put myself at a disadvantage in the arena if we use weapons and you cut me or something,” she voiced her thoughts. “But I know first-hand that you can do a lot of damage without weapons, too……” She pursed her lips, considering for a moment. “What do you fancy today?” she said eventually.

The girl was logical, not that Glitter would intentionally hurt her.  After losing Kahente...Glitter felt like she needed to redeem herself.  She needed to prove she was still an excellent mentor and steal the spotlight away from that self absorbed demon in District Eight.  “I wouldn’t hurt you,” Glitter told her.  “That wouldn’t be beneficial for either of us.  But I’ve always preferred hand to hand.  Why use weapons when your body is a perfect adequate one?”

“I still find it amazing that you two have six kids,” Satine said, ruffling Neptune’s hair as she walked round to sit beside Glitter. “I hope I meet someone someday who’s okay to have that many with me.” Maybe more. Satine wanted a big family one day. “You’re gonna love pasta,” she assured Tetra. “It’s one of the best foods this world has to offer. And when you’re ready to try it with sauces and things?” Satine trailed off, smiling. “Thank you, Glitter. I didn’t realise how much I needed this. All of it. You’re the best.”

Tetra kept babbling happily to both her mother and Satine.  “The right person will come around.  I never thought I’d have one kid much less as many as I have,” she told her.  “But with the right person...anything is possible.”  Glitter shrugged.  “It’s no trouble, Satine.  I think we all needed this.”

“I guess holograms don’t offer the same resistance as a real person, right?” she checked. For all she knew, things were different in the Capitol, where technology was much more advanced. “If you punch someone, your hand just goes right through. Rather than having to deal with broken knuckles afterwards.” She much preferred fighting human opponents. The consequences felt more real, which made the whole experience far more exhilarating for her. “Since What’s-his-name isn’t here yet… would you train with me?” she asked hopefully. The chance to spar with the Glitter Rosseau would be a dream come true to her, and her District partner didn’t seem to be planning on leaving his room at all today.

“Exactly.  And holograms don’t think like real people,” she told the girl.  “It’s better to know what’s you are exactly up against.”  Still, she smiled when Stellina asked if she’d spar with her.  “Sure,” she told her.  “That’s what I’m here for.  Weapons or hand to hand?”
