Task 006: Arena Plans

Do you plan on forming any alliances?

Why? Hoping I’ll take it one step further than my sister and full-on make-out with someone on TV? While they’re conscious?

If so, with whom?

Sweetie, if you find anyone who wants to make-out with me on live TV, I will literally give you $1000. Good luck.

Do you plan on trying to grab something during the bloodbath?

Yeah.

If so, what?

Preferably something big and stabby.

Do you plan on hunting out other tributes in the arena?

Probably. Might get bored otherwise, you know?

What would you consider your greatest strength?

Well, I mean, I could kick your ass, for starters.

What would you consider your greatest weakness?

I’m dangerous when bored. So they tell me.

Who do you think is your biggest competition?

Fucking trespassing wall-boy from Ten. Just kidding. Um, Juno, probably. Or Skye.

If you don’t win, who would you want to win?

Winnie Sycamore is too sweet to be in a place like this. If she makes it past the bloodbath, which would surprise me I’ll be honest with you, then her I guess.

Charity grinned excitedly and settled onto the bench with a slight squeal of happiness before she turned her attention fully on the girl. “That’s fine. I learn really fast.”

“Okay, so what you wanna do is, like, a normal braid, but instead of going over the middle piece, you go under,” she explained as she started. “And then you just add hair to each side. Like a French braid. But backwards.” She tilted her head as best she could without stopping her braid and added, “make sense?”

“Never in your life?” she repeated sceptically, rolling her eyes. His original victory might’ve been too long ago for her to remember, but 121 was definitely still fresh in her mind’s eye. “Thanks for the offer, sunshine, but I’m like half your age. And anyway, museums are boring.”

Juno had absolutely no idea what she was doing. Her trainer had shoved some throwing knives in her hand, but she felt awkward holding them. (And vaguely concerned that she looked like a butcher.) She looked to the career with, sucking in her bottom lip. “Oh yeah, me too. Me and knife #1 are really hitting it off.”

“You make a great couple,” Stellina retorted. “I hope you’ll consider me for your maid of honour when you two lovebirds get married.” Joking aside, she stepped forward and took another knife from the rack. “You’re holding it wrong,” she explained. “Do you want to throw it or stab close-range? These babies can handle either.”

Winnie stepped back forcefully as the girl started chucking knives into the air, a hand instinctively pressed to her lips in shock at how easy she made it look. Surely, she had practiced for a long time, and the kind-hearted part of Winnie knew that she’d be an asset if she could get this girl to work with herself and Rowan. But the practical part of Winnie knew that a girl this lethal would be a death sentence to befriend. The best she could do was try not to climb the ranks of her hit list.

“That’s… impressive,” Winnie admitted, still slack-jawed in awe. “You should bust that out at the interviews, I’m sure everyone would love it. Or in the Arena.” Winnie watched her throw the knife quickly into a target and nodded. “That’s better than I’m capable of. Watch.” She stepped forward, held the knife between her trembling fingers, and chucked it. It went far to the right, hitting into the metallic racks of weapons on the wall to the side. A trainer cursed loudly. 

“Hey!” he pointed at Winnie. “Watch it. Don’t throw weapons you’re shit at. Try that again and you’re out of here.”

“I-I-I’m, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” she babbled, holding back the tears as she called her apologies across the room, feeling her cheeks grow crimson. 

Stellina snorted. “Yeah, because that’ll attract sponsors. It’s just a silly little party trick.” Her parents certainly hadn’t been impressed after the shock factor wore off.

Watching the man’s reaction to the errant knife, and the girl’s obvious upset, Stellina moved one of the two knives she had left into her dominant hand and threw it at the trainer’s hat, knocking it from his head and onto the floor. “Whoops,” she said unsympathetically. “I missed.” Taking a step towards him, she tossed her final knife from hand to hand casually. “You try that again and you’re out of this life, bucky.” She smiled sarcastically and turned back to the girl. 

“Are you okay?” she asked gently, lowering the knife to her side.

The girl was logical, not that Glitter would intentionally hurt her.  After losing Kahente…Glitter felt like she needed to redeem herself.  She needed to prove she was still an excellent mentor and steal the spotlight away from that self absorbed demon in District Eight.  “I wouldn’t hurt you,” Glitter told her.  “That wouldn’t be beneficial for either of us.  But I’ve always preferred hand to hand.  Why use weapons when your body is a perfect adequate one?”

“For the aesthetic,” Stellina said, inwardly cringing at how like Carina that sounded. “And because if you want to stab someone, it’s gonna be easier to use a knife than, like, your nails or something.” She looked down at her own nails, thoroughly buffed and shined by her stylist. They’d been crusted in Kane’s blood once. She could taste it on her tongue still sometimes. “I should warn you, my trainers back home hated hand-to-hand with me because I’m all teeth and claws. Should I... you know, hold back on that with you?”

“actually no.” she shook her head not even aware of who he sister was. “there are not many people in here who know how to handle weapons and find the beauty in them. They are mostly careers and well- we are a dying population. One is the only one that still seems to be doing their work.” ever since her victory her views on the games might have changed, but that woul’t be able to change who she was. A career and people like her tended to recognize each other.“ who is your sister? ”

“Oh,” Stellina said sheepishly. She chewed on the inside of her mouth for a moment. “Sorry, then, I guess,” she added eventually. “You were academy trained though, clearly. So Four’s still going strong.” She shook her head, not really believing that she could be anybody’s first Minuet encounter. “Carina. She came here a year ago now. Ballet dancer, very tall. Killed like half the kids in her arena somehow.”

“yacht.” she corrected although it was almost irrelevant anyway. “a normal boat would have turned out to be pretty small.” she explained swiftly shaking the girl’s hand her own calloused from all the hard hours of work and training. “I suspected as much.” the previous years had been lacking mostly in careers. One seemed to be the only one almost continually still providing them.

“Let me guess,” Stellina said tiredly, jumping to the wrong conclusion completely. “You knew my sister. We look similar. Blah, blah, blah.” She folded her arms across her chest. “I’m nothing like Carina.” Or Allegra. Nothing like either of them. Even when she died, people were still going to be comparing her to her sister, she could already see it.

The girl’s wicked little smile brought a shiver down Winnie’s spine. This was what she was afraid of, the criminals here who weren’t afraid to flaunt their ability to kill. Combine that with the fact that she was definitely a Career, and Winnie had officially found the person she was the most afraid of. “Throwing knives,” she said quietly, taking the knife by the handle gingerly. She studied the blades, her heart racing. If she could learn to throw these, then she might be of some assistance to Rowan. 

“That… that makes sense,” Winnie replied, still struggling to meet the girl’s eye. She darted her gaze around, unable to find a comfortable place to rest it. “I guess you know a lot about these. You seem… skilled?”

She shrugged casually. “They aren’t my thing, no. I mean I can juggle them.” She took three more from the rack, leaving her original with the other girl, and began to expertly throw them in the air, quickly getting into a rhythm. She finished after a short while with a flourish, giving a little bow as she caught the last knife’s handle. She’d been desperate to learn anything that her sisters hadn’t already touched when she was twelve, and juggling knives had been unclaimed territory in the Minuet household.

“Unless you wanna do that, though, I’m not much use.” She turned towards the target and threw the solitary knife in her right hand at it, pulling a face as the blade embedded in the leg of the human-shaped cut-out. “See? That’s not gonna kill anybody in a hurry.”

Lysetta nodded. “I am pretty sure almost any weapon will work in the holo. If  not we can blame a trainer that told us we could use it.” She smiled, walking over to the holo and starting it up. She placed her notebook on the table that was attached to the machine and pressed “Arena simulation”.

“Do you want to start with the warm-up or go straight into a simulation? There’s plenty to chose from.” While Stellina set herself up, Lysetta jotted down the weapon that she chose and the settings she had chosen.

Stellina smirked, liking this woman’s style of doing things. Having someone else in mind to blame when things went wrong was always a good back-up plan. 

While Lysetta headed over towards the holo stage, Stellina tried the triggers on a few different crossbows before finding one she liked. After strapping a holster with eight bolts to her thigh, she jogged to meet Lysetta at the holo-stage. “Let’s go straight in,” she said, peering curiously at the computer screen over the woman’s shoulder. “These ones look fun?” She pointed with her free hand to a fluffy golden squirrel, making sure to keep her finger well away from the screen for fear of accidentally tapping something. “It says 50th. That was a way before my time, but how bad can squirrels be?”

“Pretty aren’t they?” Olive passed by the tribute, still holding the throwing knives she’d been using with her tributes. “The capitol makes sure we’ve got all the toys.”

“How considerate,” she said sardonically. “You’d think they could funnel this crazy money into something that would be useful more than twice a year.” She was thinking specifically of Carina’s old dance school, although honestly now she thought about it, there were a lot of other places this money could be going, too.

“Where did you learn to do that?” Charity asked, pointing toward the girl’s braid. “Can you show me the pattern? I’m always looking for new variations of braids to try out on my nieces, they love it. I’m sort of like their personal stylist.”

Stellina sighed, although she wasn’t as irritated as she let on. Combing her fingers through her hair to undo the braid she’d already created, she shifted along the bench-seat slightly to make room for the girl. “Watch carefully,” she said, reaching to separate the hair at the top of her head into three sections once again. “I’m not gonna do this for you more than once.”

“Exactly.  And holograms don’t think like real people,” she told the girl.  “It’s better to know what’s you are exactly up against.”  Still, she smiled when Stellina asked if she’d spar with her.  “Sure,” she told her.  “That’s what I’m here for.  Weapons or hand to hand?”

She wanted to go straight for the weapons, but common sense was holding her back. “I feel like I’ll put myself at a disadvantage in the arena if we use weapons and you cut me or something,” she voiced her thoughts. “But I know first-hand that you can do a lot of damage without weapons, too......” She pursed her lips, considering for a moment. “What do you fancy today?” she said eventually.

Drake gulped uncontrollably as a face began to form itself in his head. He remembered well what the boy looked like, how he glared at him when he addressed the luxury district during his tour. He remembered the rumors that flew about during his Games and the accusations thrown at him by the Gazette in the months between his victory and having to return. One article “joked” that the District 1 boy was training to volunteer just to be in the same tower as him and “kick his ass.” Like all things, however, the fake controversy over the fake rumors grew old and the Gazette heads stopped addressing it. It was the last Drake thought he would ever have to think about it until now. 

“You’re talking about Kane…aren’t you?” he asked with a twinge of anger. “He and Carina…they danced together.” Drake knew they were more than partners on the floor, but wouldn’t say anything more or otherwise disgrace the ballerina’s memory.

Stellina snorted. “Danced. Yeah. We’ll call it that.” In his defence, they were dance partners. Stellina had watched several of their performances together, and pretended to know what was going on when truthfully the lack of talking threw her off completely. But it made her sister happy, so she’d tried, for her.

“We found out after she’d died that he’d been knocking her about,” she said, looking down at her burger. She decided to put it down on her plate before she accidentally tore through it. “There were... bruises. And cuts.” She looked back up at Drake and shrugged, giving him half a smile, “That’s why I’m here, by the way. Kane was my oh so unfortunate victim. He deserved worse. I wanted to kill him.”

“Was it at least not in vain?” She raised an eyebrow mustering the scarves before rolling her own sleeve up as high as possible revealing a rather deep scar on the middle of her shoulder: “First time I tried to wield dual blades. As you can see it did not end nicely.” She huffed a little before covering her arm up again extending it: “Joy Trovato. Nice to meet you.”

Stellina looked at Joy’s scar and clicked her tongue. There was something about meeting a fellow academy kid that felt almost comforting to her, like she wasn’t so far from home after all. “You’re a victor, right? Weren’t you in that boat arena?” It was difficult to keep track sometimes. There were twice as many victors now and life got in the way of remembering them all. Taking Joy’s hand, she added, “I’m Stellina Minuet, District One.”

Osiris’ physical prowess was certainly one of his weaknesses. He barely knew what most of the weapons in the training room were, let alone how to use him. He received no help in the private Capitol training room, mostly because the trainers that had been allocated to the room had given up on the Capitol tributes having a chance at winning altogether. So, he decided to make his way to the common training area, hoping he would find someone who would be able to help him.

The room was packed full of his fellow competitors, some seemingly well trained in the weapons they wielded, others looking as confused as he was. Osiris made his way over to an uninhabited station, approaching someone standing beside it, “Excuse me, but do you know how this works?”

“Nope,” Stellina admitted. “No idea.” She picked up a coil of wire and a pair of twigs before sitting down at the table. “Should probably figure out a few traps and things before we go into the arena though, right?” Although her first choice would always be to jump head-first into a fight, Stellina wasn’t foolish enough to hope for another day-long arena like the 118th. She would need to rest at some point, and if she could protect herself with a trap then at least no-one would be sneaking up on her in her sleep.

Pulling her hand away sharply as the wire knicked at her skin, she placed the cut finger in her mouth briefly and turned to look over her shoulder at the other tribute. “You just gonna stand there, or do you wanna help me out here?”
