Did you know that it took nearly 7 months for the last child displaced from Hurricane Katrina to be reunited with her parents? There were 5,000 missing children reports filled following Katrina. These are just a few of the staggering statistics shared by Save the Children to help raise awareness about the Get Ready. Get Safe. campaign.

Did You know that 69 MILLION CHILDREN are separated from their parents every work day, yet DC and 18 other states DO NOT REQUIRE all schools and child care providers to have basic emergency plans? This is according to Save the Children’s 2015 Disaster Report Card. Those numbers are terrifying, and because of this, children in the U.S. are at unnecessary risk if a disaster were to strike.

When my children were small I made sure they knew phone numbers for me and for their grandparents in case they needed to call in an emergency.  We also had a designated meeting spot in case they had to get out of the house because of a fire or intruder.  If there was a tornado, they knew to get in the bathtub.  I taught them when with friends “if you see a gun, run.” They also knew how to dial 911.

This summer, during the height of the hurricane season Save the Children wants parents and their children to be prepared should disaster strike again. Save the Children is imploring parents to make sure their children have an emergency contact card with not only information for local family, but also family who live out of town. This is critically important because during disasters local networks and telephones lines are usually down. Being able to call family who are not affected by a storm is important to connect children back to families.

It’s so hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since Hurricane Katrina left a major U.S. city in ruins, claiming the lives of tens of thousands of people and forever changing the lives of hundreds of thousands more. Some of the most heartbreaking stories of loss involved children that were separated from parents who were nearly impossible to locate because of the chaos, destroyed homes and mass re-locations.

Most school aged children spend a good chunk of the day outside the house, separated from their parents. It’s how our society works, how kids grow up and learn. Most people don’t think twice or worry about the separation unless disaster strikes. Devastating disasters like Hurricane Katrina separated 5,000 kids from their families and it took 7 months to get them all home.

Are you ready? Are you prepared in the case of a disaster? Do you have an emergency contact card for your children? #GetReady and be prepared.

I actually had a nightmare about a similar situation. Back when I was still working full time and my kids went to a sitter, I had a dream that a massive tornado ripped through our area. Of course, in the dream, I was trying to run and couldn’t move, but most importantly, I could not connect with my children.

Alexa Bigwarfe is a wife, mother of three, dog owner, freelance writer, author, and social good mom. She launched her writing with the blog No Holding Back as an outlet for her grief after the loss of one of her twin daughters to Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). She now writes largely about advocacy; maternal, infant, and children’s health topics; and issues of importance to women. Global Team Advocates for Disater Safety

This Saturday is the 10 year anniversary of the most deadly natural disaster in the United States. Save the Children has been working with the children affected by Hurricane Katrina for the last decade. After Hurricane Katrina, 5000 children were reported missing. It took weeks, and even months, to reunited these children with their parents. After Katrina, The National Commission on Children and Disasters made recommendations on keeping America’s children safe during a disaster. Ten years later, 79% of these recommendations have yet to be addressed.

Flanagan’s honest, insightful memoir “Renewable: One Woman’s Search for Simplicity, Faithfulness, and Hope” walks us through one woman’s search for the life she had forgotten and her journey back to following her dreams in a consumerist world that often conflicts with her very beliefs of living an environmentally sound and simple life. The story takes us back to 1984 when Flanagan was a young, gutsy Peace Corps volunteer in the small rural village of Bobonong, Botswana where she prefers living in a small, mud hut and embraces the simple pleasures of African village life. She learns the native tongue Setswana, befriends the people around her and becomes a world-viewed, open-minded young woman over the course of two and a half years in Africa.
