My beloved local trekking guide in #Sapa, Bau. One of my favourite things about travel is meeting local people and this time was no exception; Bau is an inspirational woman who belongs to the Black Hmong ethnicity living in the rice terraces of Sapa. She cannot read or write because she never had the opportunity to attend school but she speaks excellent English and appears to be the main provider for her family. Bau is a true local who took us hiking off the beaten track to places I couldn't ever find or understand alone. Will be back for a longer trekking trip in the future I hope. One of my favourite things about living in and exploring Asia is the variety of ethnic groups each with their distinct culture, customs and clothing. Last week during a trip to Sapa, Northern Vietnam I had the pleasure of meeting a lovely local Hmong lady and her family. We stayed with her in the family's home and trekked for 2 days around the scenic mountains and rice terraces. When I first met Bau and her sisters, they decided it would be fun to dress me up in their traditional Hmong clothing - each piece taking hours/days/months to create by hand. I felt so priveleged to have the chance to wear the clothing they put so much time and effort into creating. Such a memorable few days in this village and I can't wait to go back.
