today I learned that a Chinese woman named Chien-Shiung Wu proved quantum entanglement before anyone else. have I ever read about her in the pop physics books I read? no. this makes me so mad but also that's fucking awesome

she's also one of the women named as an example of women being left out of the nobel prize.

in her case, her two male collaborators got the 1957 physics prize for predicting violations of the parity law for weak interactions. the male collaborators performed a literature review and concluded that there was no evidence for or against the parity law for weak interactions and approached her to ask for help. she designed and performed what is now known as the wu experiment that proved their speculation correct. (this is a separate achievement from the experiment demonstrating quantum entanglement. she was a brilliant experimental physicist and designed several experiments that the scientific consensus at the time thought were impossible.)
