Advanced dictionary development

Sometimes you want to add multiple entries to the dictionary at once. Maybe you have data in an Excel file already? You can import this data in a very efficient way to Glosbe using https://app.glosbe.com/add-multiple service. Just use @ deimiter

If you have multiple example sentences use similar interface to import https://app.glosbe.com/add-examples .

In case of endangered languages the pronunciation of words is critical, so the ability to record words / sentences is crucial. You can do it using our interface here: https://app.glosbe.com/recorder .

We also have a interface for guided dictionary development. If you are developing a dictionary between some very popular and other, less popular language, Glosbe will ask you to translate words and phrases from the popular language. Personal data removal

It happens that the data we display contain personal data, for example first name and surname of a person not holding a public office. If this is the case and you would like your personal data deleted, please send us an email.

You MUST indicate the url addresses of the pages where your data is located. We need to know exactly which parts of the data contain your personal data so please show us each place where your data is displayed on site.

Religious texts in Glosbe

Glosbe is growing. As you might have noticed recently, we have had a huge import of translation examples. Thanks to Pawel, who has joined our team, we have succeeded in adding millions of examples. Some of them are news articles and some comes from religious texts that are translated to multiple languages.

As we do not balance out parallel corpus, for some searches or ever for some dictionaries it may happen that the word you search for is presented in sentences that are religiously commited. They are included in Glosbe due to their linguistics value. We are not associated with the church standing behind these texts as well as we are not associated with news publishers. As long as a sentence presents correct translations we find it a proper content in Glosbe.

Anyway there were some complains and we do understand users who find this kind of content inappropriate. If you are among them, please contact us. We are considering creating a filter, that will allow you to remove sentences from specific discourse, like religious texts, common speach, law and official documents etc.

Changes in translation memory engine

Hi all, we have changed the translation memory engine a bit this weekend. I hope it will work better, especially if you query for multiple word phrase like "go away" or "sleep well". Remember, that if you query for multiple word phrase you can also change the way Glosbe does search: do exact search, "must be" search or leanient search. Sometimes it is good to try them all to find out what you are really looking for.

MIlanese says hello

New language has just appeared in Glosbe: Milanese. You can find more about Milanese here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milanese_dialect . And you are of course welcome to build new dictionaries with Milanese language!

Milanese has mis_mil language code. Visit http://glosbe.com/mis_mil/all-dictionaries page to see drafts of dictionaries already created. Visit also http://glosbe.com/it/mis_mil for Italian-Milanese dictionary!

About Glosbe

Sometimes I receive requests on email to write something about Glosbe, when it has started, where the data comes from etc. So, let me write this post to have these questions answered.

Glosbe appeared first on the web in mid 2011. It was created to be the best multilingual dictionary possible. And from that time it is in continuous development. We have added translation memories to show you examples of translated sentences, we have added pronunciation, images and much more.

The data we provide on Glosbe comes from both open source and free databases that we have found on the web and from users contributions. The translation memories comes mostly from published free parallel corpora. As our interface displays author attribution next to each data presented you can easily find out what are the sources of the data we display.

The engine of Glosbe is developed by two programmers, we are located in Poland. The data is created by everyone.

Glosbe is multilingual, which means, that it supports ALL languages. Any language, that has ISO693-3 code already is in Glosbe. In case of any other language you wish to build dictionary for: just let us know, we will add it. In summary there are around 7.000 languages in Glosbe. As we offer a draft for creating any bi-dictionary this gives almost 50.000.000 bilingual dictionaries in Glosbe. Some of them are empty though...

Plans for the future? Provide better dictionaries, for more languages :-). If you can help us in doing so, by sharing your thoughts, adding new entries to the dictionary of creatively criticize what we have done: please do so.

Endangered languages and Glosbe

Did you know, that language may extinct just like a species? And it really happens. In the globalized world small languages are becoming less and less popular... if you wish to take a look at the list of endangered languages solely in Europe take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_endangered_languages_in_Europe . You might be surprised first how many of them are in danger.

In Glosbe we aim to build dictionaries to all languages in the world, not only these most popular. We deliver our service even for already extinct languages like Ancient Greek dictionary. Moreover, Glosbe lets you not only to write dictionary, but also record pronunciation and place real life sentence examples.

Creating an artificial language dictionary at Glosbe

Glosbe hosts not only well known, big natural languages but also some artificial languages that you may have never heard of.

So you can find here well known Interlingua dictionary, Esperanto dictionary, but you probably don't know Kah language or Ugadid language.

If you wish to create your own artificial language, or you wish to develop a dictionary for a language that is not know and does not even have it's own ISO code: Glosbe is a right place for you. Just let us know.

Add a message on dictionary page

Today new feature has arrived. Sometimes there is a need to write a message for users of a dictionary to help them understand what language this dictionary really is, describe an artificial language involved or inform about some special rules of editing dictionary.

Now it is possible. Take a look at http://glosbe.com/mos/en page, where there is custom message describing Mòoré language. Hopefully more users will be able to find this page when searching Google with different language names.

Glosbe is collaborative dictionary. It means that all translations you see there are created by users just like you. How do they add new entries?

There are several ways to add new translations. Some are useful if you want to add one single translation. When you have a hundred of translations to be added there are other solutions. I you are interested take a look at this short tutorial, where both one and multiple entries are being added.

If you have thousands of entries to be added in for example Excel format it may be the easiest to mail us with dictionary file. We will add these entries ourselves.

Hi there on the Glosbe blog! This is my first blog post ever :-)

We start this blog to write what's new in Glosbe. As you probably know, Glosbe is a multilingual collaborative dictionary. And as there is a community behind our dictionary there is really a lot going on. Glosbe is also still under heavy development, I hope this blog will be a nice way to inform about new features we implement.
