“The golden trio strikes again, with a genius play against the Türkiye team in their latest game! Starting off with an astonishing save from y/n, the ball heads to Haruhi, who delivers one of her iconic sets to Sumire, who slams the ball...”
Haruhi, one of your teammates, sat in the next chair over looking at some video on her phone, audio blasting out of the speaker. You jumped slightly as a slam echoed through the room.
Haruhi paused her reel, looking at the door. The makeup artist groaned, trying to fix the now unsymmetrical blush on her face. Sumire yawned, covering her eyes from the fluorescent lights paired with golden hour. “Why is it so bright in here..?”
Haruhi immediately perked up “Sumireeee,” She groaned, though her tone was playful. “Did you forget about the gala tonight? Y’know, for the ‘athletes of the youth’?” She added a crappy British accent. Maybe Australian? Honestly, you couldn’t even tell.
“Uh, no?” Sumire grimaced at the thought of being forced to cozy up to people for hours without any source of entertainment. “I thought that was next week or something.”
Haruhi let out a sigh. “Well, you're late. Now sit down and let these very kind people pamper you up!” She smiled, trying to appear innocent to avoid a dirty look from Sumire. It didn’t work.
Sumire made her way to the chair on your right, sitting down with a defeated sigh. “I just want to get this over with.” You smile fondly, turning to Sumire.
“Well, I'm very proud that you're conquering your fear for us. It makes me oh so happy.” You hold up a heart with both your hands, flashing a lopsided smirk reeking with mischief.
Sumire scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Whatever.”
One of the dressers called for you to put your dresses on. After struggling to get the unbelievably tight dress zipped up, you stood in front of the mirror. It was a gorgeous blue dress, embroidered with various jewels and gems in different shades of blue. “God damn,” was the only thought you were able to express out loud. I mean, you looked like one of those western movie stars.
You looked over at your friends, their dresses matching yours. Haruhi had a beautiful pink one, similar to yours. Sumire was wearing a white version as well.
Haruhi grabbed her phone and motioned to the mirror "Hey you guysss~”
She motioned to the mirror a few feet away, the three of you lining up in front on either side of Haruhi. Sumire just stood still with a blank expression. Haruhi held up a peace sign and puckered her lips at the screen. You always sucked at posing for photos, opting for your usual pose.
Haruhi snapped 20 photos in the span of 3 seconds, then put her phone away. ‘Okkk- lets go now!” Haruhi clapped her hands, heading to the door.
More girls piled into the limousine, nearing the venue. Music blared through the speakers, the girls singing along. You were with the younger portion of your volleyball team, making your way to the International Youth Sports Gala. Your coach, Valentina, being the last one to pile in. “Hey girls,” She motioned for the music to be put on low. “I know you're exited but coach over here has plans; so, the goal is to be out by eleven, alrighty?” She sat down, the red satin bunching at her waist as she sat.
Some of the girls groaned, while some looked grateful. Thank God, you thought. The last thing you wanted to do was entertain a bunch of cocky athletes and perverted officials. You turned to Haruhi, who was sat like a barbie as not to ruin her dress nor hit her head on the roof of the car. Sumire, sitting to your left, glared at her “Must be nice being so tall.”
Haruhi lightly booped her on the nose. “Beats being an ankle biter, but it's pretty nice I guess.” Sumire almost lunged at her, if it weren't for you butting in and gripping her wrist.
“If you guys start a cat fight in the car, so help me I will end both of your lives.” You looked at the two girls with a scolding look on your face. Just as they were about to go at it, a knock landed on the window. “Ah- were here.” You quickly let go of Sumire, straightening your posture and putting a graceful smile on your face.
An attendant opened the door, the girls slowly piling out. You exited the car, instantaneously blinded by the flashing lights. People yelled from all directions to get good photos or snippets of interviews if they were lucky.
Your stomach churned. You never did well with crowds. There were so many people touching you and yelling your name. It made you dizzy.
“Look over here!”
“y/n!”
“You three!”
“Sumire!”
This was the part where you regretted your recent hiatus, the people swarming around you like flies, begging for a photo. It was astonishing how a few months away from the press could make you so sensitive to paparazzi. You glanced back, seeing that Sumire was squinting while simultaneously trying not to look like a weirdo.
Haruhi, who was walking in front of you, grabbed your hand to drag you from the crowd. You reached for Sumire’s hand, refusing to lose her. You couldn’t let the little nugget run away from you, though she was older and could definitely navigate the paparazzi on her own.
You could tell you entered the estate when the flashes in your vision died down. You looked around the interior. It was beautiful, the chatter of people around you drawing your attention away from the decor.
Haruhi squeezed your hand. “I’m gonna go mingle for a bit. Find Sumire and I if you need anything.” You nodded, smiling thoughtfully.
You spent your time keeping small talk with anyone who approached you. You were about to make your way to Sumire, who was talking with Valentina, when someone called your name. You looked around, your eyes landing on a skinny, middle-aged woman.
Well shit.
You had spent your whole evening trying to stay as far away as possible from the annoying cougar. She beckoned you over to the group of -what a surprise- young men she was chatting with. You tried to get a decent look at the group. You recognized some of them from soccer games Sumire’s brother would often play-by-play to the two of you when you lived with your parents.
You stopped in your tracks. No fucking way. Was that Micheal Kaiser? You’d recognize those eyes anywhere. You thought that guy was stuck in prison for a long time; certainly more than a few years. Now he’s casually chatting with one of the executives of the Japanese Sports Corporation? “You gotta be fucking kidding me.” You mumbled under your breath, forcing a strained smile while making your way across the room.
You wished you could leave. Funny how the urge to run away was often paired with Micheal Kaiser.
“Ah! Y/n! It has been such a long time since we spoke.” She motioned over to the group of boys she entertained. “I saw you and thought that I'd introduce you to these fine young men. Your single right?” Before you could open your mouth to respond, she began to rant. Oh god. “If you are, I’m pleasantly surprised. I mean you're the ideal woman. I mean you have a pretty face and a gorgeous body. Not too skinny but not too muscular either. Goodness, I hate muscular women...” She continued to babble her heart out, but you weren't listening. She seemed to say something about your hair, but your mind was focused on two words. Ideal woman.
Ideal woman? Oh, how that brought you back to your youth. You remembered how people would constantly compare you to ideals. Women who were seen, not heard. Women who should just stay at home and take care of the children. Women who should roll out of bed looking like Aphrodite. Over the years, you had begun to realize that these standards were outrageous, thanks to Sumire’s dad. But things like that still sting when you hear them, their words having stained your heart like a tattoo.
You snapped back to reality when you heard someone's name mentioned. “Oh, Micheal you're from Germany as well. Do you recognize y/n over here?” You froze. I swear to God if he-
“No, I don’t.” You looked up at Kaiser, who was looking at you with an unreadable expression. “I’ve never seen her before in my life.”
Okay, rude? You though that all the kindness you had shown him in your youth would at least have an effect on him. It was understandable that he would deny any association, but it was the fact that he showed no reaction when saying those words that really wrenched your heart. All you wanted to do now was leave. Leave and get as far away from Micheal as possible. Before you had the chance to excuse yourself, the woman interrupted you yet again. Jesus, does this woman ever shut up? She was beckoning another person over. You glanced over. You quietly sent a quick prayer when you saw Sumire and Valentina making their way over.
Valentina greeted the woman, sending a wink your way.
“It’s so nice to see you again, miss. How have you been?” Valentina held the cougar’s hand to her lips, lightly kissing her ring finger.
“Oh Valentina, you're such a flirt. I supposed you haven't changed much, have you?”
Grateful for the distraction, you tuned in on their conversation. “Well of course; I’m still the best volleyball player in the world.” She smirked at the woman in front of her, letting go of her hand. “I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these girls took my place though. They’re true geniuses on the court.” Valentina grabbed both you and Sumire by the shoulders, pulling you in.
Sumire looked up from her phone. “Huh.” She looked confused, bombastically side-eyeing your coach.
“Nothing, Monella. Go back to your phone.” Sumire scowled, turning her attention back to whatever she was doing. You let out an amused huff, smirking.
You looked away from your friend, glancing around for a spot you could focus on until you could leave the group. Your eyes landed on Micheal, standing just a few feet away from you. This is the closest we’ve been in years, you thought. He’s changed. You did a quick scale of his body, being careful to keep your expression natural.
The first thing you took note of was the amount of blue on his body. Blue eyes, blue hair, and even the tip of a blue tattoo peeking out from his neck collar. Gee, I wonder what his favorite color is.
Glancing back, your eyes caught his again. They had always been the most mesmerizing shade of blue you’d ever seen. Like the deep water of the ocean. Before you could read into the details any more, he glanced your way. Your eyes met for a quarter of a second, before you quickly redirected your vision to the woman on your right. You tried hard to focus; you really did. But you practically feel Micheal’s stare boring into the back of your head. Your hands unconsciously moved to fidget with a strand of your hair, twirling it rapidly in between your fingers. Valentina glanced at you, then to your right, then at Kaiser. Her grin deepened.
“Ah, I’m so sorry about this but I just remembered have somewhere to be and I’m these girl’s chauffeur. It was nice speaking with you all!” Valentine yanked both you and Sumire away from the conversation, breaking your intense focus on one of the shards of glass hanging from a chandelier.
Your eyes darted to Kaiser as you were being dragged away. His gaze left yours as soon as you laid your eyes on him. You narrowed your eyes, dragging you focus to Haruhi, who was running through the crowd at an alarming speed.
“Guys! You will never believe who I just met.” She looked like an absurdly tall puppy dog staring at its owner at dinner time.
“Great. Save it for the car.” Valentina forced a sarcastic smile and dragged Haruhi away from the crowd of people.
After shuffling around the venue trying to find an exit, searching for Valentina’s car, remembering that she did, in fact, not drive here, then hailing a taxi, the 4 girls piled inside the cramped car.
“You have no regards for national laws.” Sumire sighed from atop Haruhi’s lap.
“Well it's not my fault the car only has so many seats, is it?” Valentina huffed, puffing out her chest. “Besides, you all looked like you wanted desperately to leave. Especially you, y/n. Jesus, you looked like an anxious five-year-old.”
You groaned, immediately reminded of his face. “Don’t remind me.” You exhaled, resisting the urge to end it all. Just when you had finally begun to let the guy go, he saunters into your life like the idiot he is. You had thought he was the best man in the whole world.
But that was a long time ago.
And now, for the first time in years, you had truly felt something shift.
a/n: can we tell I suck at writing tension lol ౯_౯ it’s okay tho bc it don’t have to be perfect… haha righttt (。ᵕ ◞ _◟)

what they don’t tell you about being a writer is that returning to a long fic you haven’t touched in a while means rereading 50k words first because you don’t actually remember your own fics that well
You were crying on the doorstep of your house. You wished you could run away, and it was as if you had never wished for anything more.
At only 12, your parents had crushed the one thing you had ever set your heart on. Set aside for running away, of course. You wanted to become a pianist. It had been a secret you had only shared with your closest friends; Veronica and Sumire. You only spoke to them on your annual trip to Spain. Back here at home, you had no friends. Your parents thought that spending time on unnecessary distractions was a waste when you could be working to become something greater.
You tried to get your mind away from the bad thoughts, like Mr. Hisano had always taught you. You thought about greeting the Hisano family at the airport next break when you could see Sumire again. You had always seen Mr. Hisano as a second father - though you wished he was your real father. You had always hated the original, more then he hated you. He always claimed everything he did was to keep you safe. What a lie.
Ah-happy thoughts.
You failed to think of anything else gleeful in the slightest, the tears finally drying on your face. At this point you were just bored. But you couldn't go back inside and see the disappointed looks on your parents faces after the little “tantrum” you had thrown.
You huffed, settling on humming a tune to pass the time until your parents remember you had left. Burying your head in your arms, you remembered a song from the foreign cd Veronica had gifted you last year. You started humming softly, your voice only carrying to the civilians walking in front of you.
You felt a small, hard object hit your head. You look up to see a boy, who couldn't be much older than you, holding a few pebbles in one hand and a soccer ball in the other. You squinted, trying to get a good look at the boy, his hood covering a majority of his face.
It seemed as if he had been dressed in rags, filthy ones at that. His face and hands were covered in dirt, and grime was etched into the creases of his fingernails. You caught a glimpse of his eyes. They were a stunning shade of blue that you had only seen on television. Though he looked messy right now, if he took a bath and changed clothes you could tell he had plenty potential. He could very well have fit into high society.
“Why are you looking at me like that.” Oh. He spoke.
“What do you mean? You hit me with a rock.” Your tone probably sounded rude, and that was no way a woman should act. You then straightened your posture and fixed your face, a soft look replacing the sneer. You had a bad habit of letting your expressions go rouge.
The boy scowled, opening his mouth to speak again. You spoke before he could give a snobby remark. “Do you play soccer?” You meekly motioned to the ball in his hand, desperate to keep the conversation going. Maybe you could make a friend.
He glanced the ball. “No.” He turned to walk off, your eyes widening. No. No you cant let him walk away. You quickly rose from the steps, rushing to follow him. He turned around reflexively, raising a hand to strike your face.
Your left cheek stung as he began to back away, his face flickering with guilt. Instead of getting angry and lashing out at the unnecessary slap like any normal person would, you just touched your face and looked at him with an expression akin to a deer in the headlights. “let me play.” You mumbled.
He looked confused. “wha-”
“Let me play.” You rose your voice a bit, doing your very best to assert dominance. “I wanna play with you.”
He looked bewildered. It wasn’t every day that a pretty girl in a fancy outfit goes up to a dirty boy in poor excuses for clothes and asks to play. The fact that it was of your own free will made it even more bizarre.
He turned. “Whatever...” That wasn’t the answer you had expected, but luck had been on your side. Already had forgotten about the bruise forming across your cheek, you rushed after him.
I wonder if we can be friends.
