Regarding classes, like if I need to use the rest room do I raise my hand? (I know this is kind of a weird question)... What should I expect when I first get into my classes?

Don’t worry this is actually a very common question. When you have to use the rest room you do not need to raise your hand. You may get up and leave at your own will. However, make sure you are not disrupting the class when you leave. Also make sure you are not leaving during something important.

As for your second question it may seem different at first but that is common for all students. The nice thing is is that the first couple of days are syllabus days where your professor just covers what you’ll be doing for the year. This is kind of easing you into college classes which is nice. My main piece of advice is to get to class earlier than usual the first couple days to get a good seat. Other than that remember that there are people in the same boat as you who have not been in a college class before, and your professor understands that so there is no need to be nervous!

Best LIFE hall? Stuck between Evans and South Scott.

Well the best Res Hall is a matter of opinion dear reader. Every hall on campus has it’s perks and it entirely depends on which perks sound the best to you.

Let’s consider your two options here: Evans and South Scott. Now obviously both Res Halls are LIFE halls so they both are fully freshmen environments with CA’s meant to help out with the transfer into college life. So, with that in mind, on a pure living level, they are relatively equal.

Now let’s talk about the aforementioned perks. South Scott Hall is a large building with many floors so there is the potential to meet a large amount of people should you keep your door open and are willing to roam. South Scott is also the home to Scotty’s, a campus sub and pizza place as well as small grocery store. Proximity to food is important to some so if you wish to not have to travel far for a meal South Scott might be right for you.

Evens has different perks of course. It is a small and more easily navigable building so if your preference is maybe a more small and tight knit community this living situation might be right for you. Evans also has the advantage of being right next to Reeve so both food and the convenience store are close by, as well as the location of many campus events. In addition Evans is also next to the other LIFE Halls so it is quite easy to make new friends being in such close proximity to others going through what you are.

So, dear reader, after this long winded answer, it is entirely up to you. Every Res Hall has its perks so it comes down to your preferences.

Is there a back to school bash?

There are multiple events that happen here on the first weeks of school to sort of kick off the school year. There is the red carpet event which is actually on move in day which consists of games, food and a dance. Then REC fest, which is later on in the week, is a bunch of activities that take place outside of the REC and Wellness center. Also there is Tastes of Oshkosh where you get to see all clubs and organizations on campus as well as getting free food. Those are just a couple of examples. There are many more events that take place to start off the school year!

Do freshmen move in earlier than everyone else?

They do indeed! Freshman move in day this year will be September 6th. That’ll be one day before everyone else due to orientation events that go on that day.

Do you think having all textbooks on a tablet would be helpful? Is that even an option?

Great question! Ebooks are out there so having them is an option, however you would not be able to get an ebook through the campus bookstore.

We offer new and used books and in some cases you can rent your textbook. A lot of students on campus do use physical textbooks. I think a big part of that, for me personally, is that it can be kind of distracting having an ebook on a tablet that can do a lot of other things. So that’s something to consider, as well.

Also if you buy your book from our bookstore they do have a book buyback at the end of the year. So the overall cost of the physical textbook might not be that different from an electronic one.

If I don't have my state ID in time for my odyssey date, what happens?

Your state ID is only needed during Odyssey to get your student ID card. If you don’t have a state issued ID by the time of your Odyssey date, you will still get your photo taken for your student ID but you won’t receive the official card until you present your state ID - which you can do when the semester starts.

Is there a fee for the SRWC?

There is no additional fee to use the Student Rec and Wellness Center as long as you are a student at UW Oshkosh and have a Titan I.D. You also have the right to use all of our recreational and wellness facilities as well as Albee Pool at no additional cost. Another cool fact about the SRWC is that you have access to all of the fitness classes, as well.

How large does the campus feel in terms of student population? Like do you get to know most people around you, or are you meeting new people daily?

Honestly, I've met sooo many awesome people here! I think UWO is the perfect size--not too big, not too small. The campus feels smaller and smaller the longer you're here (I've been here three years) because you meet so many new people every year...sometimes every week! Even if you don't personally know a lot of people, their faces become familiar after maybe having classes with them or just seeing them at events or around campus. So I'd say there’s a pretty equal balance of knowing a good amount of people around me, but also meeting new people almost every day. Which is awesome. :)

Do professors actually care? Like do you get a long with them? And what do you do about missing a day of classes due to not feeling well, or medical things?

Jenna - Junior - Journalism

Yes! They are always willing to meet with you outside of class during their office hours if you don't understand something or need help in any way. And if you can't make their office hours, they make time for you! I once had a professor help me via Skype--it was awesome! They really go above and beyond. I formed a close relationship with that particular professor, and I've gotten to know others very well, too.

To answer the second part of your question, missing class in college is a lot different than in high school! A lot of smaller classes have attendance policies (i.e. you're only allowed to miss 3 classes during the semester) and some larger classes might have pop quizzes to make sure you're attending regularly. It's also totally up to you if you go to class or not, so you have to keep on top of things! But if you're sick, it's okay to miss class. I always email my professors before class to let them know I won't be there and ask if there's anything I need, then contact a classmate to get the notes that I miss. To kind of go along with my response to your first question, professors will be more understanding if you 1. communicate with them regularly, 2. attend class regularly and 3. show them you are working hard. As someone who is sick pretty often, I can promise you that everything works out okay. Sometimes you need to take a day or two to rest up and get back in the swing of things. :)

Professors definitely care! They're very easy to get along with and they definitely want you to succeed. I have never had trouble getting in contact with a professor when I needed help either! In my experience, as far as attendance, the smaller classes usually have some kind of attendance policy, but there are usually a few free days you can skip for any personal reason, and if you are sick or have extenuating circumstances they are more than willing to work with you without it costing you points. Professors are in your corner and they are your greatest resource on campus.

Would you recommend having a bike on campus? Where do you store them when they're not in use?

I would say you could go either way. The campus isn't so large that walking is a problem, but there is also a benefit to having a set of wheels. There are bike racks all over campus, so storing your bike isn’t really an issue. Every residence hall has a place nearby that you can store your bike under a roof, as well. You would just have to make sure to register a bike before you could park it at your residence hall.

What should I eat for lunch today?

Well, friend, if you are close to campus, I highly suggest the buffalo chicken wrap. I'd further add that you should eat it on the Reeve patio, because it's a glorious day outside and that's a good place to enjoy the deliciousness that is the buffalo chicken wrap. HOWEVER... if you aren't close enough for that heavenly wrap, I suggest eating something light and fun. I think a turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich with a side of fruit would pair well with the temperature and current weather conditions. Feel free to sub out turkey and bacon with provolone cheese and assorted veggies if you’re a vegetarian. Add a lemonade on the side with a little umbrella and you should be set.

“My favorite thing to do on the weekends in Oshkosh is play a pickup game of Ultimate Frisbee with my friends by the Rec and Wellness Center. I like to take advantage of the Frisbee golf courses in Oshkosh, as well, on the weekend when the weather is nice.”

“When I am involved in a Theater production here at UWO, we normally have rehearsal on Sunday night, which keeps me busy. I think it is a great way to start the day with a physical activity. After working out I have all day long to just study or hang out with friends. We normally hang out in the residence halls and we watch movies or just talk for hours!”
