Finding My Shape
You can call me Dee. I am a 37-year-old gay man in San Francisco. I am out of shape, and I started this blog to document my journey to getting back in shape. But first, some pictures from today to show how out of shape I am at the moment.
It wasn't always like this. I am a runner. I ran marathons and ultra marathons (50 miles). I remember eight years ago I took this picture. Not picture perfect abs or body, but showing that there is potential buried beneath the fat.
My goal is to build a body that's better than my ten years younger self and rediscover that potential.
How did I get here?
I am going through a divorce after an abusive marriage. The company I started a year ago failed spectacularly, and I am carrying a ton of debt. I have to give my entrepreneurship dreams and get a day job. Finding the right job hasn't been easy either. Boo hoo. First-world problems. I know. But they are my problems. As a result of all the stress and accompanying depression, and some odd running injury, I got into a vicious multi-year cycle of losing shape, conditioning, and accumulating fat.
Why do I want to get back in shape?
To me getting back in shape is not merely a matter of having those visible abs or some definition here and there. It is getting back to my core self. It is me trying to put an end to this pity party and start afresh. I got the courage to get back in shape by first building up a meditation practice. All the suffering in the last couple of years turned me into a Buddhist. My daily meditation practice has helped me clear my mind fog. I now vow to clear this body fog, by ridding all that's not needed and building everything that's necessary. I still don't know how well I will tide over my life problems and debt, but change begins with self. The self is made of the body and the mind. I am taking care of my mind. It's time to take care of my body. It is easy to get buried in all the negativity and forget who we truly are. To discover who we truly are, the fog of the mind and the fog of the body must be lifted.
