i support universal free healthcare for one simple reason: if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness you should quit your job. quitting your job is the correct response to terminal illness. but you can’t do that if your healthcare is tied to your job

listen if somebody knows that they will be dead in a years time, and you are forcing them to continue to come into work, that’s fucked up. terminally ill people should be able to quit their jobs and live their last few months to the fullest. i don’t get how that’s a controversial opinion

There’s not enough nuance to disability filing to be able to just “go on disability”.

I was diagnosed with cancer in January 2021, and I was forced to quit my job to seek treatment. I immediately lost my insurance, I couldn’t get approved for Medicaid because I had recent income. I had to pay out of pocket for my life-saving surgery to remove an entire organ that was fully riddled with cancerous tumors.

Medicaid backdated 3 months, so I was able to recoup that loss, but I had to have a gofundme to afford my surgery. The process of running the gofundme was horrifyingly dehumanizing. And then I had to apply for disability, which got approved MUCH faster than it normally would have, due to the severity of my condition. I’ve known people that have waited years, who still aren’t on it, that are in similar conditions to mine.

The system is broken, and it needs a DRASTIC overhaul. Quitting your job shouldn’t be a fucking death sentence.

you will never catch me complaining about an actress on a tv show having an imperfectly concealed pregnancy or a character going on a sudden trip somewhere while her actress is on maternity leave. so many actresses (and women working in any other field) are fired, punished and pressured into making reproductive decisions for their employers' convenience & if i have to try a bit harder to suspend my disbelief then that's absolutely what i'm going to do if it means people are getting to exercise reproductive & bodily autonomy without punishment
