28 Democratic senators just voted to advance the first federal ban on trans athletes and a federal definition of sex that would make trans & intersex people non-existent. Both of my senators voted against my people. So here is the letter I sent to each of them. Feel free to copy or adapt portions of this, if you like, to include in your own messages to reps to demand support for trans and intersex rights. -Mayday
Senator,
I'm a parent and a survivor of childhood abuse, and I want you to know that watching you collude with the hate-mongering Republicans trying to strip the rights away from our most vulnerable citizens really SICKENED me.
Trans and intersex children and adults aren't going to stop existing just because the law is being warped by opportunistic politicians scapegoating powerless populations in order to distract voters from their own well-documented, but apparently consequence-free, crimes against women and children of all genders.
I know hundreds of people in this state who supported you, as I have, only to watch you vote against us all like we're not Americans, too. "Unto the LEAST of these." We are survivors of horrific abuses, already regularly mocked by many in society, but must we always also be marginalized beyond the point of even possessing TRUTHFUL, accurate information in our government documents and medical files? Just because some entitled and pampered bigots would prefer to deny the basic reality of our presence on this planet? Is it not perhaps possible that we are not mistakes made by our Creator, flaws in the natural order, but instead part of a greater purpose and plan for the equality and liberation of all people?
Either way, my people need Democrats to stand up for our best ideals, because the GOP is using every opportunity to prove they don't actually have any. If the federal government continues to erase and ban statements of factual truth, whether scientific, historic, or personal truth, the impact of this needless prejudice will harm yet another generation of queer, trans, and intersex kids.
I'm a disabled parent from one of those groups, raising a spectacular kid in another, so I'm pleading with you to stop voting against us, and instead help us convince other elected Democrats to reject these short-sighted, unpopular, and pathetically hateful attempts to make the gender non-conforming into the political football of the moment.
I'm in a cold house, I can't always afford my rent or medications, and grocery prices have forced me to become more and more familiar with my local food banks. Meanwhile, both suspected and convicted criminals are crowded around the Resolute Desk plotting how to make people like me into public enemy number one.
What can you do for us?

Avatar vs. Avatar
I finally had a chance to see James Cameron’s Avatar last night, and while it was visually amazing, the rumors I’d heard about the casting and themes being racially insensitive were unfortunately true. The film deviated dramatically from the source material, Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender; so much so, in fact, it’s hard to believe the filmmakers had even watched much of the groundbreaking series.
These issues have been covered far more effectively by the folks at Racebending.com and i09, but I made this simple comparison chart to give you an idea of how different the movie is from the original cartoon.
As you can see, many of the characters have been replaced by blue cat people called the “Navi.”
In fact, the four elemental tribes have been reduced to just two, the Navi, an amalgam of the Water, Earth, and Air tribes, who thankfully retain much of the spiritual influences of the show, but not their telekinetic “bending” powers; and the Fire Nation (confusingly referred to by the Navi as the “Sky People,” who are portrayed as military forces controlled by corporate interests. Fire Lord Ozai (not pictured above), played by Giovanni Ribisi, is especially weakened, having morphed into a pathetic middle-management type issuing racist orders throughout the film.
The animal life in the film retains the fantastical amalgam-style invention that permeated the cartoon, but is far less adorable, as it seems the creators instead aimed for the “extreme” vibe audiences now crave in blockbusters. I’d have love to have seen the familiar tigerdillos, turtleducks, and catgators. Momo, Aang’s faithful sidekick/pet is the most obvious example of this extremification. Momo’s film counterpart is an enormous pterodactyl dragon creature ridden by Aang (because unbelievably, the film omits Aang’s stalwart friend and air transport, a sky bison named Appa).
In any case, critics and fans are right, Avatar raises the bar for what is technically achievable in film, and the 3-D effects were beyond impressive. But I can’t help but wonder what a more faithful adaptation would have been like under a less ambitious director. What I wouldn’t give to see a filmmaker like M. Night Shyamalan, who’s shown a propensity for handling faith-centric stories and racial sensitivity, take on the Avatar universe. Ah well, maybe someday.
I'll be at Nirvana Comics in Knoxville, TN on Saturday from 11-5 signing copies of my new Speed Racer variant! 🏁🏁🏁
Clark: Luthor's a madman, but he's not dumb enough to trust the Joker.
[Bruce begins applying black eye makeup.]
Bruce: Don't make a joke.
Clark: I would never. I think it's cool.
Bruce: It's tactical.
Clark: I figured. For glare, and...intimidation
[Bruce pulls his mask on, completing the effect.]
Clark: It just looks cool, too.
Batman: Let's go.
Clark: Yep.

I went pretty overboard on some get-well cards for one of my kid's good friends from Robotics (FRC Team4189) who was in a terrifying car accident last week. We're all so grateful he's recovering. Jacob's hilarious, super-smart, & a HUGE @vancityreynolds fan, so: MAXIMUM EFFORT. 🖤❤️⚔️

Hourly Comic Day 2025. HCD was started by Simone Veil and it’s super rad it’s still going. I hosted the first several years on my old message board before it grew into a social media thing. This year, I was attending the Charlotte Mini-Con, which meant including several panels of driving up there and back from where i live in Georgia.
