So those betta fish hell walls - is it common for fish to be thrown in the bin live

I was out with family looking through aquarium stores today, and we came across some of those displays with the betta fish cups (in this case it was a series of boxes with water dripping from the top boxes to the bottom boxes (so that the bottom boxes get all of the nastiest water, naturally,,), more common in my country, I will continue to call them cups since thats what most people are familiar with).

The stores we went to are both local, and while we were looking i noticed the sweetest little betta at the bottom of one of the fish hell walls, it was the only one alive on that level, and its fins were all wilted while it huddled in the corner, but when i walked past it got out of its corner and came to the front of the tank. Now, i have a tank already partially cycled, ~30L, and I know that there is one last fish on the hell wall of this one store that is saveable. I'm in the process of getting plants for that tank so that the betta has some places to hide and such, as I dont want it to be more stressed out after I get a hold of it, it seemed to have a couple more days in it so I'm hopeful.

Now, my questions.

The first store, had a full betta hell wall and almost *none* of the bettas were ill, even the ones at the bottom. I suspect they are throwing out bettas before they are becoming ill so they look betta for customers, but any instances I have seen about it online look faked. I am not against and illegal night time dumpster dive if theres a chance, but I do worry about having more bettas than tanks, i dont think i could leave them behind. The second store now, was leaving dead fish in the tanks, I'm not sure when or if they will just wait until they are already dead before disposing of them and replacing them all, but there were around 7 dead fish, 3 sick, and the rest were empty. is it possible to make a deal with store owners to take the sick fish? whats really confusing, is the rest of this store has very nice tanks, and a few have really healthy and happy fish, including bettas, its just this wall thats neglected.

Is it common for fish to be thrown live, is there a chance of recovering any?

There would have been one other store, but they burned down a couple weeks back, so they dont have any fish, it was a shame, was probably the best store of the lot, not fancy but well cared for.

my day today:

woke up knowing i got a C- in my theory course last semester & would prob get between an F to a C- in my community service class i had an extension on that ended yesterday

looked at the online system to make sure im probably all good to graduate at the end of next semester, assuming i get a C- in the community service class

found out my theory class isn't being applied towards my degree & is categorized as a fall-through credit instead of part of my degree plan, and that im missing a 3rd year sociology class (im required to take like any 6 that don't count towards other sociology requirements), panicked thinking this is bc i got a C- in the class & that might not count towards my major

started planning if what to do if i need to take an additional summer semester to graduate when my study permit is up in june

got an extremely kind email from my community service prof that i got a C in the class & could still quickly submit the 1 missing assignment i have for a few more points (sounds like it might bump me up to a C+). this is a huge relief for me

continued to plan for what to do if i need to add one more 3rd year course to my classes next semester (none of which would work for me without special permissions)

told my mom that for some reason the online system isnt correctly acknowledging my theory class & that its saying i'll be 3 credits shy in my major requirements to graduate, she v carefully wasnt saying anything in response to this (at this point i still think this is happening bc i have a C-)

looked into my college's grade policies and all of them say a D or above should count towards any degree requirements, i just need at least a C+ to use things as a prereq. looks like the online system is legitimately just misreading the class bc id already taken another theory course for that requirement, and this one was just as a 3rd year class

i rlly fucking have to meet w an advisor at the start of next semester (in like 3 days) to sort out whats happening
