If a cannonly straight character is depicted as gay in fanfiction, this is ok and normal, because it’s an alternate universe, but when a gay character is depicted as straight, oH ThE HoRrOr. This is getting a way bigger deal than it should be

buddy, straight erasure is not a thing. heterosexuals are all around you. straight people are in every single media you’ve ever consumed. so when people, say, make a character that’s assumed that they’re heterosexual like someone of the same gender, it’s literally nothing in the wide sea of heterosexuality literally everywhere.

but today there’s gay representation, and not to mention a whole lgbt movement that’s been gaining awareness in the last 50 or so years. it’s known fact that there’s a small (yet growing) pool of gay characters out there.

turning a gay character straight is not only erasing that characters identity, but hurtful in general. you’re taking away much needed representation, and that can hurt any lgbt kid out there that found solace in relating to said character. do you get it now? turning a straight character gay =/= turning a gay character straight.
