On liking stuff.

There's a post going around on Tumblr about reminding people that they had a Hamilton phase and them being ashamed of it, and I must be in a minority because I still think Hamilton is great, so I don't know what there is to be ashamed of.

I'm aware that the fandom of that particular thing had a reputation for being... strange, but I'm pretty sure being part of a cringey fandom is, like, a rite of passage to be on the internet nowadays. No need to throw the play itself under the bus because of it.

Maybe I'm just OOTL, but in general I don't understand the mindset of being ashamed of having loved something in the past that you aren't as into anymore. That's part of your growth and development.

thinking about how whizzer is frequently established to be an outsider in act one… “i’m jewish, i’m jewish, i’m jewish, half jewish”, he frequently sings harmonies that stand out from the others in act one,

he’s not apart of the conversation about jason until jason invites him, and both marvin and trina make it clear that they don’t want him there

the way everybody turns to shout at him at the beginning of this had better come to a stop, and trina does the ‘shame on you’ gesture towards him,

at the end of march of the falsettos (song) he is doing the pose of the fourth, unofficial wise monkey (do no evil) that is not as much as part of the group as the main three are, (see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil 🙈🙉🙊 <- look, they even have emojis while the fourth one doesn’t)

in a tight-knit family reprise, marvin pushes’s jason to the background during his arguing with mendel, where only whizzer is there to comfort him.

and his name itself stands out from the rest. in act one there’s marvin, trina, jason, mendel and whizzer. <- this is what this post was originally supposed to be about btw.

he doesn’t fit into the tight knit family like the others do. marvin tries to fit him into the role of the housewife and have him be monogamous, yet also doesn’t accept him as apart of his family. the characters put the blame for the family breaking apart on whizzer as the homewrecker.

also i’ve mentioned this previously, but his harmonies and parts in act one really stand out also establish him as an outsider musically. for instance, when everyone else goes “his name is mendel” whizzer doesn’t sing that part and simply goes “aaahhhh” because he’s not a part of all that- he doesn’t (really) know mendel because he’s ‘not a part’ of the family.

whizzer’s part is always very noticeable in act one because it’s always either a lot higher than what everyone else is singing or at a really poignant harmony (he has a really strong harmony heard at the end of this has better come to a stop- it’s more obvious in the proshot than the recording). another instance where this is really obvious is at the end of making a home where whizzer’s melody is basically entirely different from trina and mendel’s
