An old photo but the urge to keep wild betta is creeping back, especially when someone asks you if you want a pair of betta macrostoma for $80. I still have the empty tank filled with water that was supposed to be for shrimps but so far, I haven’t stocked it up because I’m still deciding what to get. Plus, I’m loving water change days when I have less than 4 tanks to take care of. So much easier than having double digit tanks. Also with the hillstream upgrade in the future.
Very nice little pacific reef tank at the Greensboro Science Center. Super well maintained and beautifully aquascaped. All of the tanks in the aquarium building were very modestly stocked fish wise which I always appreciate at public (and private lmao) facilities.

I love that PP was very pterosaur-heavy, but I'm mildly let down at how all of them were rather drably-colored. Would have been neat to see some really vivid pterosaur colors than just the seabird shades of whites, yellows and greys.
As far as I'm aware, the range of colours in the pycnofibres of pterosaurs in Prehistoric Planet are pretty much at the limit of what is possible in terms of colour. There's some evidence of branching pycnofibres being present in pterosaurs, but more pycnofibres were monofilaments. Think the same as fur and our hair.
Birdlike feathers can carry a complex array of coloured pigments from ingested food, and these pigments create the bright colours of many bird species! However, monofilaments like hair, or like most pycnofibres and early dinosaur feathers, aren't structurally complex enough to hold those dietary pigments. There are a couple minor exceptions, but as far as we know generally the only way for monofilaments to be coloured is via melanin.
So basically, this is what limits the pterosaur colours in the show to browns, whites, reds and greys, because those are actually the only colours monofilamentous pycnofibres are capable of being! That doesn't mean pterosaurs can't be colourful, and I'd argue that the Prehistoric Planet pterosaurs do have some lovely colour in them!

They're not front and centre, but the adult Alcione have blue faces, which is something I would've loved to see in more detail!
And of course there's the lovely reds and yellows of the Barbaridactylus.
So basically I reckon the pterosaurs in Prehistoric Planet have plenty of colour on them, and the vibrance is realistically constrained by the physical structure of their pycnofibres! Honestly having more neutrally-coloured feathers with bright faces is something I'd definitely expect to see if we could ever see real pterosaurs!

so the main character of the film, Meilin Lee, is gifted with the ancestral ability to turn into a giant magical red panda, for the purpose of punching invading armies to death.
but where, exactly, are these ancestors from? well, Meilin and her family currently live in Toronto and the US, but it's pretty obvious that Mei here turns specifically into a Chinese Red Panda, as the Tibetian Red Panda has more white on its face and is a much duller red overall than its Chinese counterpart:
SO that means that Mei's army-dunking ancestors must have come from somewhere in... here:
red pandas are mountain animals that are found in limited places in China proper, meaning that Mei's ancestors are specifically from either Yunnan or Sichuan Province. neat!
HOWEVER, there is a tie-breaker here:
during the movie, Mei's dad Jun is shown cooking a very specific and extremely real dish- Sichuan Twice-Cooked Pork.

so in all likelihood, that means that the origin of the oh-so-cuddly-yet-fierce magical panda family lies in this real world place!
which doesn't really matter in the grand view of things, sure, but it's a nice little detail and fun to think about.
