It’s sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.
There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they aren’t used anymore!
I took calculus my senior year of high school, and I really liked the way our teacher framed this on the first day of class.
He asked somebody to raise their hand and ask him when we would use calculus in our everyday life. So one student rose their hand and asked, “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?”
“NEVER!!” the teacher exclaimed. “You will never use calculus in your normal, everyday life. In fact, very few of you will use it in your professional careers either.” Then he paused. “So would you like to know why should care?”
Several us nodded.
He picked out one of the varsity football players in the class. “You practice football a lot during the week, right Tim?” asked the teacher.
“Yeah,” replied Tim. “Almost every day.”
“Do you and your teammates ever lift weights during practice?”
“Yeah. Tuesdays and Thursdays we spend a lot of practice in the weight room.”
“But why?” asked the teacher. “Is there ever going to be a play your coach tells you use during a game that requires you to bench press the other team?”
“No, of course not.”
“Then why lift weights?”
“Because it makes us stronger,” said Tim.
“Bingo!!” said the teacher. “It’s the same thing with calculus. You’re not here because you’re going to use calculus in your everyday life. You’re here because calculus is weightlifting for your brain.”
And I’ve never forgotten that.
Sundays and synapses.
App Review Kanji Study 漢字学習
I really like this app. It provides writing practice, and quizzes for hiragana, katakana, kanji radicals and kanji based on grade level or N level.
If you buy the full unlocked app for $9.99 you can create custom study lists. I think this is an important feature because it enables you to break the kana into manageable groups.
It provides you with the ability to turn of romanji. I think that’s critical to becoming fluent. As I’ve mentioned before romanji can become a crutch that you don’t even realize you are using.
The writing practice is ok, but for me, I need pen and paper to practice. Just using my finger on my phone screen doesn’t help me.
You have the option to set reminders and study time goals. This app only provides the definition and sound of each kana. It doesn’t provide grammar or phrases.
This app is excellent for providing a solid foundation of kana knowledge.

Apparently this app is on sale, but I don’t know the sale price or can’t see it since I already purchased it. Normally it’s $9.99 and I think it’s now fully unlocked for $1.99, but I’m not sure. I’d check it out if you haven’t already bought this.
it's October!

I took the day off from school to study for my CETs. There’s too much formulas to remember so I made some flash cards.
ACET & USTET are 5 days away :O

I haven’t been reading or posting much since school started but here are some chem notes I rewrote. Hopefully we’ll start a new book in English class soon :’)
•IBSL Psych• reading the textbook is not only homework, but super helpful to get an understanding of the concept before learning it in class. Taking notes while reading helps me stay prepared and have questions ready to ask in class.
First day back at school and already have massive amounts of home work. Spent the afternoon doing some Chem hw to revise content learnt in grade 10 + 9, and plan on trying to unravel the mystery of balancing complex equations later tonight (Oh Chem, how I have not missed you).
I relate to this post on a personal level. I'm taking AP Chem this year...

Haven’t posted in more than a month lol but my first day of college wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Woke up late though and I had to rush to my first class but my prof never came so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Made some new friends and my professors seem really cool so I’m excited for what’s to come!
