"Tea?" The Lady Mother of Autumn waves her hand, and a set appears on the table before her.
Today's tea set is reticulated porcelain. Pot, cups, and sugar bowl are painted with elaborate scenes of the Autumn countryside—pixie-filled vineyards and bountiful harvests, starlit bonfires and woodland hunts on horseback—each set within a latticework framed by gold-painted cartouches.
The lady pours two cups. In one, she places two sugar cubes, then hands it to Elain.
"Thank you, lady." Elain bows her head. When the lady raises hers to her lips, Elain watches her tip the cup to her mouth, the long column of her throat stretching as she swallows. Elain lifts her cup to do the same.
"Cake?" Another wave of her slender hand. The light catches on the gold and ruby rings that adorn her fingers.
A tray of tea cakes appears before her, each identically cut into small hearts. Elain's mouth waters at the sight.
But she pauses, lowering her teacup to her saucer. This is not why she came. "I shouldn't."
"I've had them make your favorite," the lady insists. "Honey-glazed maple."
At the lady's gentle encouragement, Elain relents. They look delicious, and she finds she cannot let go of the desire to please her. Elain picks one up, and bites into it. The cake melts against her tongue, sticky and sweet.

chapter one: unwashed
"Through with your little beastie so soon?"
Clythia is not so blatant as to freeze, but for a faerie as fluid and uninterruptible as she, the hitch to her stride is just as damning. Her lustrous hair, bound tight in braid before she stole away, flows now free across her shoulder in the puzzled tilt of her hand.
Lifting a hand, Amarantha presses up from her chaise in pursuit of the nearest censer. "Spare me the insult of further falsity," she says. "The stench of this pet you keep clings to you like a burr," a scrunch of her nose as she sets a fresh finger-pinch of resin upon the briquette, "and sevenfold as offensive to the senses. That you thought me ignorant after the very first tryst is slight enough."
Amarantha turns to find her sister standing much like she had as a youngling caught by their father to be playing with her food: jaw set, chin high, irises sparking indignant. Always, her emotions have made master of her, and always, they have seen her chastened by the end.
“If you were to name a sword, what would you call it?'
Gwyn answered, thought she hadn't been asked, 'Silver Majesty.'
Emerie snorted, 'Really?'
Gwyn demanded, 'What would you call it?'
Emerie considered. 'Foe Slayer, or something. Something intimidating.'
come what may in terms of shipping in the next books, what i really want to see is elain go from being “the nice one” to being genuinely kind. because i don’t think she is (and this is part of why i like her so much). i don’t think she’s malicious or mean, but her passivity and tendency for self-preservation lend themselves to unintentional cruelty and i’d really like to see her have to reckon with that. she’s nice, she’s sweet, she’s gentle, she has a good heart, but she’s ultimately very self-centred and it gets in the way of the good she’s inclined towards and clearly wants to do.
this is just a throwaway thought, but as it’s a point i see brought up against her a lot, i wanted to share my thoughts on it. i’m not bringing it up against her because, again, it’s one of the things i like about her. i don’t want to say that she thinks she can do no wrong, but it does seem to me like she’s unaware of how hurtful she can be and i’d really like that to be part of her arc. but i also don’t trust sjm not to be awful with it & punish her for it in the way she punished nesta for her sharp edges. idk.
hope this made sense. and it’s very much pro elain despite focusing on her more negative traits!

Because people LOVE to use color as a basis for who ships what (which... ok, sure guys), I decided a good use of my time was to go through the books and see what I could find.
